The Artist is the first boss in Control Resonant, fought at the end of the opening quest, Orientation. It appears as a colossal cracked stone head that drops into a ruined plaza and attacks with charges, homing projectiles, and aerial debris. Beating it is mainly a test of patience with dodging and lock-on, followed by a scripted finisher.
Quick answer: Lock on with R3, dodge the projectile bursts and ground charges, hit the glowing cracks on the head whenever it surfaces, then press the interact prompt on its face to execute it and complete Orientation.
Where the Artist fight starts in Orientation
The encounter is tied to the quest Orientation, under the objective Defeat the Artist. You reach it by following the tracker to the source of the patterning, moving through institutional corridors until you interact with a chamber doorway. That interaction triggers an explosion and a cutscene where the giant head emerges from a vortex and crashes into the street below.

The arena is a circular roadway or plaza ringed by floating fractured city buildings under a bright yellow, broken sky. There is open ground to circle on and plenty of debris, so keep moving rather than standing still.
Press R3 to toggle camera lock-on. Lock-on works best in this one-on-one fight and keeps the head centered while you dodge.

The boss cycles between three main behaviors. Learn the tells for each and you can create safe windows to attack the glowing cracks on its face.
| Attack | What it does | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Projectile clusters | Fires homing energy bursts and hurls debris across the plaza | Dodge sideways, then close in |
| Submerge charge | Dives underground, resurfaces, and rams forward as a headbutt | Sidestep the charge, punish after |
| Aerial phase | Levitates high and rains explosive debris and shockwaves | Use rising platforms to reach it |
How to beat The Artist

Dying resets you to the checkpoint at the start of the fight. From the death menu you can Reload, open the save menu, or cycle tips, so an early loss only costs you a restart of the arena.
The execution finisher
Once the health bar is empty, an interact prompt appears on the face. Press the action button to trigger a scripted finisher where your character climbs onto the head, pulls a glowing spike from the eye, and repeatedly drives it into the eye until the head falls silent. Dylan confirms it with the line, “It’s over.”
You know the fight is won when Orientation shows Quest Completed, rewards drop into your inventory, and The Board dialogue plays over the aftermath. The game then opens the Combat Ability Selection menu.
Orientation rewards
Completing the quest grants the following:
- 1x Living Shard
- 2000 Source
- Untapped Badge 11-60
- 2x Reset Item
Choosing a Combat Ability after the fight
After Orientation, the Combat Ability Selection menu lets you pick one of three skills. Each costs Power to use, and the menu lists their damage and Falter values so you can compare before committing.
| Ability | Power cost | Damage | Falter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barrage | 400 | 60-160 Blunt | 12-36 |
| Volatile Anomaly | 1000 (throw 400) | 150-350 explosion | 25-180 |
| Shield | 600 (bash 100) | 100 Blunt | 60 |
Barrage sends projectiles hurling toward a target, giving you a cheap ranged option at 400 Power. Volatile Anomaly summons an ally you can throw and detonate, dealing more damage when that ally is at low health. Shield absorbs damage with durability equal to your Power meter, and dodging with it active performs a Shield Bash for 100 Power. Any of the three is a valid opener; the Shield is the pick shown in the sample run.
What Orientation leads into
The Artist is only the introduction. Later fights include The Dancer in a circular theater arena, a two-phase duel that ends when a No Power alert opens her up to a finisher. The main story eventually pushes toward the game’s final confrontation, where new quests such as The End set up the climactic battle.

That endgame centers on the Hedron, a massive glowing mechanical ring fought across multiple platform phases before the core is destroyed. It is a very different encounter from The Artist, trading a single stone head for a multi-phase arena battle.

For now, clearing The Artist is the milestone that ends Orientation, banks your first rewards, and unlocks your first Combat Ability. Once the quest reads completed and the ability menu appears, you are ready to move on with the skill you equipped.
