Farming in Valheim runs on a simple loop that pays you back more than you put in. Plant a seed and you get one vegetable. Plant that vegetable back into the ground and it grows into a seed plant that hands you three new seeds. Do that on repeat and a single carrot becomes an endless carrot farm without another trip into the wild.

Quick answer: Plant a mature vegetable such as a Seed-carrot in cultivated soil, spaced about 1 meter apart. After roughly three in-game days it matures and gives back three seeds per plant, tripling your stock each cycle.

Craft the Cultivator first

Nothing gets planted until you have the Cultivator, and that ties farming to the Bronze Age. Once you can smelt Bronze, head to a Forge and build the tool with 5 Core Wood and 5 Bronze. It is a two-handed tool with 200 durability, and each cultivate or planting action chips away at that durability, so keep the Forge handy for repairs as your fields grow.

Where each seed type is found

You cannot plant a crop until you have picked up at least one of its seeds in the world. Each type lives in a specific biome, and two of them are locked to where they grow.

Onion Seeds are the outlier for looting rather than picking. You pull them from chests inside the ruined stone buildings scattered across the Mountains, so open every container you pass up there.

The Plains are the only biome where Barley and Flax will grow. Plant the crop itself, not a separate seed item; neither will grow on a Meadows farm, regardless of spacing.

Prepare the soil and plant your seeds

Flatten a patch of ground with the Hoe so your rows sit level. Vegetables plant more cleanly on even terrain, and you will find it far easier to space them later.
Equip the Cultivator and right-click to open its radial menu. Choose Cultivate and run it over the flat ground to turn the grass into dark, tilled soil that is ready for planting.

With seeds in your inventory, open the Cultivator menu again and pick the crop you want, such as Carrot. Point the placement circle at the dark soil and plant one seed at a time.

Space every plant about 1 meter apart

Crops crammed together will not grow. Hover over a plant and a healthy one reads Carrot (Healthy), while a crowded one reads Carrot (Needs more room to grow). That plant simply stalls until the space around it opens up, wasting soil and time.

The gap you need is roughly 1 meter, which lines up exactly with the width of a 1×1 Wood Wall piece. Placing one down as a measuring guide is the quickest way to judge the distance while you learn the spacing by eye.

Multiply seeds with the seed-plant loop

Here is the mechanic that turns a handful of seeds into a permanent supply. Seeds grow into vegetables, and vegetables can be replanted as seed plants that grow back three seeds each. Once the loop is running you never need to harvest wild seeds again.

Plant your Carrot Seeds and wait about three in-game days for them to mature into full carrots. Press E on each grown plant to collect the carrots into your inventory.
Open the Cultivator menu with those carrots in your pack and select the Seed-carrot option. Plant these back into tilled soil, again spaced about 1 meter apart.
Wait another three in-game days for the seed plants to flower, then harvest them. Each one gives back three Carrot Seeds, so a full row multiplies your seed count with every cycle.

Turnips and onions follow the exact same pattern with their own seed-plant options. Split your harvest so part of it goes into the kitchen and part goes back into the ground as seed plants, and the farm keeps expanding on its own.

How to know the loop is working

You know a plant is progressing when hovering it shows the Healthy status. After roughly three in-game days a mature vegetable gives an Added Carrot pickup, and a harvested seed plant shows Added Carrot Seeds x3. The moment you see that x3 confirmation, your seed count is climbing and the cycle is self-sustaining. From there it is just a matter of tilling more soil and repeating the harvest.
