Minecraft Ice Caves: The New Frozen Cave Biome Explained

The Fourth Drop 2026 biome adds glowing Ice Crystals, falling icicles, a Frozen zombie variant, and a new Potion of Freezing.

The Fourth Drop 2026 biome adds glowing Ice Crystals, falling icicles, a Frozen zombie variant, and a new Potion of Freezing.

Minecraft’s Fourth Drop 2026 is set to introduce Ice Caves, a frigid biome beneath the surface. Its cave layer contains ice, calcite, and frozen waterfalls, alongside a dedicated light source, a new environmental danger, quicker ore excavation, and an additional hostile creature. Game Director Agnes Larsson presented the reveal with members of the Mojang development team.

Quick answer: The update brings a frozen underground biome featuring luminous Ice Crystals, dropping icicles, a Frozen zombie, Ice Balls, and a Potion of Freezing. These additions are slated for testing and due later in 2026, though an exact launch date has not been announced.

What the Ice Caves biome is

The Ice Caves are the first freezing underground biome in the game. They generate deep in the cave layer as an icy variant of the existing cavern system, built from ice, packed ice, blue ice, snow, and calcite. Large chambers run through with cold blue tones across the walls and ceilings, and the whole space sits well below the surface rather than beside the snowy biomes up top.

Ice Caves connect with lush cave zones rather than remaining isolated, while lava cuts across the same stone. The resulting clash between warmth and frozen terrain affects the scenery and makes navigation more hazardous.

Ice Crystals light the biome

The standout block is the Ice Crystal, a crystal that grows naturally on the floors and walls of the biome. It emits light, so it works as the caves’ own illumination, and it grows in a pattern that resembles amethyst clusters. Crystals act as solid blocks you can stand on.

Because they glow and can be harvested, Ice Crystals double as a building material. You can pull them and place them in your own builds for decorative lighting, which gives the biome a use beyond just exploring it.

Icicles and the light-and-heat hazard

Ceiling icicles in Ice Caves shed ambient ice particles, reinforcing the biome’s frigid atmosphere. They interact with a heat mechanic that alters underground lighting: when a torch or another light source is set near one, it melts free and drops, damaging anything beneath it.

Since illumination can set icicles falling, using light to prevent mob spawns in an Ice Cave carries danger unlike the routine approach in standard caves.

Icicles can be mined for collection and then positioned as desired: suspend one from a ceiling or set it atop a floor block. This makes them usable as decorative pieces in custom builds.

Faster ore mining in the ice

In Ice Caves, ores appear within recognizable stone and deepslate splotches on the icy floors and walls. Their distribution is uneven, making each vein easy to spot against nearby blocks.

Pickaxes chew through ice blocks in very little time, making a route to an exposed vein far quicker to clear than a tunnel through solid stone in a standard cave. This makes the biome a productive place to collect ores visible in the open.

The Frozen zombie variant

The usual hostile cave mobs also turn up in Ice Caves. A further enemy is the Frozen, a zombie type with ice and snow coating its head, torso, arms, and legs.

The Frozen has a close-range attack and a ranged one. A hit from its melee attack inflicts the freezing status effect: a frosted vignette rims your screen, your movement slows, and freezing damage continues over time. Certain Frozen carry an Ice Ball to hurl from a distance; the projectile’s impact damage depends on its speed when it connects.

Ice Balls and the Potion of Freezing

If you kill a Frozen carrying an Ice Ball, it can drop the Ice Ball item—the projectile used for its ranged attack. The item is an ingredient in a newly added brewing recipe.

Put an Ice Ball into a Brewing Stand alongside Awkward Potions and Blaze Powder to make a Potion of Freezing. The displayed brew is Freezing I with a 0:45 duration; it inflicts slowdown and freezing damage on anything struck. Brewed into a Splash Potion of Freezing, it can be thrown at mobs or other players, turning the Frozen’s attack against new targets.

When the Ice Caves drop arrives

The Ice Caves additions belong to Fourth Drop 2026, after the Wilderness Bound game drop. Testing has been confirmed for the biome, Ice Crystals, icicles, the Frozen zombie variant, Ice Ball, and Freezing potion. The drop is due later in 2026, but there is still no confirmed official date or time for launch; the reveal is the basis for the information so far, not a completed release.

A Minecraft snapshot or preview build will be the first place to look for these features in testing. Until then, the information here reflects the reveal, and specifics may change before full release.
