Red Moon Rising turns the Dark Zone into a Black Tusk-controlled gauntlet where the danger comes from your own gear rather than rival players. It is a limited PvE event in The Division 2, playing out under a red sky that scrambles your SHD tech and rewards you for pushing your luck. The core idea is simple: the longer you stay in, the stronger you get, and the easier you are to kill.

Quick answer: Red Moon Rising is a PvE Dark Zone event running through November 3, 2026, where Red Moon Stacks add stronger buffs and drawbacks the longer you stay out of a safehouse.

How Red Moon Stacks work

Red Moon Stacks arrived with Title Update Y8S3.1 and sit at the heart of the event. While you are active in the PvE Dark Zone, your stack count climbs. Each increase layers on a mix of powerful offensive bonuses and equally serious defensive penalties, so a build that feels unstoppable at high stacks is also a build that dies fast.

The count is a run-based modifier, not a permanent reward. Ubisoft has not published a single “best” stack number, so the right moment to cash out depends on your build and how much valuable loot you are carrying.

The event’s central tradeoff is what happens to your stacks: extracting contaminated loot secures your finds, but resets those stacks. When you have an Exotic or Named item you genuinely want, extraction is generally safer than risking it for a larger stack that could vanish with one death.

Where the event takes place

Red Moon Rising only occupies whichever Dark Zone holds the PvE slot for the week. That designation rotates between DZ East, South, and West, with DZ South hosting the opening week. The other two Dark Zones keep their normal PvP rules, so checking the map label before you enter matters, or you can drop into a rogue-enabled zone by mistake.

In the PvE Dark Zone, PvE rules apply and all gear—including Prototype equipment—is normalized to level 40. A Dark Zone Surge coincided with the event’s first week, providing bonus DZ XP and Funds. The Division 2 also had a free weekend running September 24–28, with the base game discounted by up to 90% off.

The Phoebe Marauder and the Recruiter

Combat during the event centers on two threats. The XB-35 “Phoebe” Marauder, an airborne drone world boss, is the sole source of the two new Exotics. It has four rotors; at any given time, a white immunity bubble shields three of them from damage. Since the protection shifts between rotors, focus fire on whichever one is exposed and adjust targets as the bubbles move. After destroying all four weak points, attack the body. The Iron Will chest piece can avoid the shield stage: its Resolved talent allows headshot damage through the bubble.

Phoebe spawns on a base cooldown of 60 minutes, but clearing Landmarks cuts that timer by 20% each, so chaining a few nearby clears brings the boss out far sooner. A prompt appears in the top-left corner when it spawns, and it is marked on the map with a skull.

The Recruiter returns as the event’s human target. Defeating him is the sole way to earn his unique mask, and he can appear during extraction, so calling in the helicopter can turn into a boss fight. His exact spawn conditions are not confirmed, and an extraction call does not guarantee he shows up.

Rewards, Exotics, and the loot pools

Red Moon Rising draws from dedicated loot pools that cover Exotics, DZ Named items, curated Named items, and Prototype gear. The headline additions are two new Exotics, both of which drop only from the Phoebe Marauder during the event.

SarruExotic backpackDamage amplifies from 5% up to 25% across 8 moon phases; a Full Moon Decoy locks 25% for 10s

Vertigo is a support LMG built on the Startling talent. Forcing an enemy into the Suppressed state disorients them while handing your whole squad that +30% damage window, which makes it a strong pick for coordinated group clears. It ships with a +15% Critical Hit Chance optic, a +50-round magazine, a +15% Reload Speed underbarrel, and a +10% Rate of Fire muzzle.

Sarru features the Decoy King talent. During combat, its moon moves through eight phases at five-second intervals; each phase adds 5% Amplified Damage, reaching 25% at Full Moon before the bonus declines. Deploying a Decoy skill at Full Moon overcharges the skill and stops the phase progression for ten seconds, preserving the 25% bonus. There is no Sarru blueprint, which means the attributes on the item you receive cannot be changed.

The broader Exotic pool also includes Fafnir, Steel & Sons, Iron Will, Bighorn, Eagle Bearer, and Ravenous, alongside the general Exotic drops. None of these are guaranteed on a given run, so expect repeat attempts when chasing a specific piece.

Since either death or extraction clears your stacks, secure a Phoebe drop immediately after the kill to protect it; summoning the helicopter for just one mediocre item is not worth it.

The first phase of a longer arc

Ubisoft describes Red Moon Rising as the first part of a broader, multi-stage story in the Dark Zone, suggesting the crimson moon will usher in more rather than just disappear. The event is available from September 24 through November 3, 2026; Echoes of Central Park launches on November 3 as well. Before the event closes, players have this period to farm the new Exotics and obtain the Recruiter Mask.

Around it, the season keeps a full calendar. The Rage Harvest global event returns from September 29 to October 6, a Twitch Drops campaign runs across the same late-September to October 6 stretch, and multiplier events including Deadeye Overdrive and a Countdown Surge fill out the weeks that follow.
