The Witcher 3: On Death’s Bed Walkthrough (Swallow Potion)

Brew the Swallow potion for Lena in White Orchard to claim 350 XP before the quest expires.

Brew the Swallow potion for Lena in White Orchard to claim 350 XP before the quest expires.

On Death’s Bed is a short moral quest in White Orchard, the starting region of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It hangs on a single decision, whether to brew a Witcher potion for a dying peasant woman named Lena or walk away and let her pass. The rewards for helping are unusually generous for such an early quest, which makes it worth finishing before you move on from the prologue.

Quick answer: Find out from Tomira whether the griffin hurt the woman in bed, prepare a Swallow potion with 1x Dwarven Spirit, 5x Celandine, and 1x Drowner Brain, then go back and let her know Lena’s potion is ready.

How to start On Death’s Bed in White Orchard

You cannot start this quest from a contract board. It becomes available during The Beast of White Orchard: speak to the Nilfgaardian officer at the garrison, and he will direct you to Tomira, the herbalist living near the Sawmill. Lena is in Tomira’s hut, gravely wounded after the griffin attacked her while she was sneaking away to meet her lover.

When you talk to Tomira, choose the dialogue line asking whether the griffin was responsible for the woman’s injuries. If you miss it the first time, you can speak to her again and pick the option asking if the griffin hurt the woman. Either line starts On Death’s Bed.

Lena is haemorrhaging internally and will not survive on her own. Geralt also warns that Swallow is made for Witchers, not ordinary people, so even the healing route carries a cost.

Swallow potion ingredients and where to get them

Geralt already knows the Swallow formula at the start of the game, so you only need to gather three ingredients. Every one of them can be sourced inside White Orchard without much travel.

IngredientAmountWhere to get it
Dwarven Spirit1White Orchard inn for 47 crowns, bought from Tomira, or crafted
Celandine5Fields around White Orchard, or bought from Tomira
Drowner Brain1Dropped by Drowners near the bridge to the Mill and the river by the Ransacked Village

The Drowner Brain is the only piece that can stall you, since the drop is not guaranteed on every kill. If no brain drops, leave the area or rest to respawn the Drowners and try again. Celandine grows thickly in the fields between the village and Tomira’s house, and a Dwarven Spirit can also turn up in a sack in the corner of the alchemist’s garden.

Brew the potion and hand it to Tomira

Collect the Dwarven Spirit, five Celandine, and one Drowner Brain using the sources above. Hunt the Drowners along the river coast if you still need the brain.
Open the menu, go to the Alchemy tab, scroll to Potions, and craft Swallow. The game marks the objective as a dose of Swallow, so a single brew is enough.
Return to Tomira and choose “Got a potion for Lena.” She takes the potion and rewards you on the spot, which confirms the quest is complete.

Rewards for completing On Death’s Bed

Handing over the Swallow potion pays out well for so early in the game. The standout is the experience, which can account for a large slice of your total before you leave White Orchard.

  • 350 XP
  • 50 Crowns
  • 2x Venom Extract
  • Manuscript Page: Cursed Oil
  • Of Sweat and Blood (book)

Read Of Sweat and Blood after you receive it. The book adds the Noonwraith, Nightwraith, and Plague Maiden entries to your bestiary. That knowledge is handy before the Devil by the Well contract, since it arms you for the Noonwraith fight there.

What happens to Lena after each choice

Neither path gives Lena a clean recovery. The outcome simply changes who you meet later and what rewards you keep.

If you give her the Swallow potion

Lena’s body survives, but the toxins in the brew destroy her mind. Return to Tomira after reaching Velen and she tells you the Nilfgaardians took Lena away. When you approach the Nilfgaardian Army Group ‘Center’ Camp in the far southeast of Velen, the infantryman Lena was sneaking out to meet stops Geralt and explains that she is now a broken husk of who she was.

If you let her die

You can tell Tomira you will avenge Lena by slaying the griffin instead. The quest still opens, but if you never deliver the potion, Lena dies soon after Geralt leaves. You forfeit all of Tomira’s rewards and never meet Lena’s lover in Velen.

Finish it before you leave White Orchard

On Death’s Bed is tied to the prologue, so it does not stay open forever. The quest fails the moment Geralt prepares to leave White Orchard with Yennefer, around the point where you speak with Vesemir during Lilac and Gooseberries. If you want the experience and items, brew the Swallow potion and give it to Tomira while you are still in the region.
