Tactical Gear is a rechargeable ability you carry into combat in Gears of War: E-Day. You hold one piece at a time, pick it at a Supply Cache, and fire it mid-fight to heal, stun, mark, or revive. Each one has its own cooldown and three mod slots, so the gear you run and the way you tune it changes how a fight plays out.

Quick answer: Choose one Tactical Gear at any Supply Cache, then activate it in combat by clicking the left stick and right stick together. It goes on a cooldown after each use before you can fire it again.

The four Tactical Gear and what they do

The campaign lists four pieces of Tactical Gear. Each carries a one-line description on the cache screen that tells you exactly what firing it does.

Tactical GearEffect when fired
Adrenaline InjectorImmediately refills health and grants a large amount of Adrenaline, reducing damage taken and increasing damage dealt while active.
Sonic DisruptorStuns Drones, throws other enemies off within a cone ahead, and cuts off their attacks.
Pulse DroneMarks enemies in a large area, making them more visible to Gears.
Stim VaporizerCreates a large area that heals and revives Gears.

The Adrenaline Injector is a personal survival tool. “Adrenaline” is a timed state, so the damage reduction and damage boost last only while it is active. The Sonic Disruptor is crowd control, hitting enemies in front of you to break up a push. The Pulse Drone is about information, lighting up enemies across a wide area so your squad can see them. The Stim Vaporizer is squad recovery, dropping a zone that heals and brings downed Gears back up.

In Horde Siege, each piece is tied to a class: the Sonic Disruptor to Assault, the Adrenaline Injector to Breacher, the Pulse Drone to Marksman, and the Stim Vaporizer to Medic. In the campaign you simply swap between them at caches.

When each piece of gear unlocks in the campaign

The four items do not arrive as a group. The Adrenaline Injector and Sonic Disruptor come together with the first TACTICAL GEAR card, found at the Supply Cache in Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line. On your first visit to the list, EQUIPPED already appears beside the Injector.

The Pulse Drone is first listed in the cache at the start of Act 3, Chapter 1: Stranded, where an introductory card displays its description. In Act 3, Chapter 3: Last Foothold, the Stim Vaporizer is third in the command-post cache list, after the Sonic Disruptor and before the Pulse Drone. These are the earliest confirmed appearances of both items; their precise unlock points are unknown.

How to equip Tactical Gear at a Supply Cache

Walk up to a Supply Cache and press X to open it. On the loadout screen, find TACTICAL GEAR alongside the weapon column and above ARMOR MODS. The tile shows your current gear and the “MODS: x/12” count.
Highlight the tile, then press A to Select and bring up the gear menu. It lists each piece you own with an individual “MODS: x/12” count. Highlight a piece to view its image, description, and three mod slots.

Press A to Equip the gear you want to carry. It gets the gold EQUIPPED tag and a tick, and on whatever was already equipped, Equip is greyed out. Press B to back out. There is no separate confirm step, so the EQUIPPED tag is how you know the swap took.

How to activate gear and read the cooldown

Press both sticks at once to activate your gear. The prompt displays two stick-click glyphs labeled L and R, each with a small down arrow; these refer to the sticks, not the bumpers. A combat hint reminds you of the control at the start of your first fight after gear unlocks.

In the HUD’s upper-right corner, just below the weapon and ammo panel, the gear appears as a round cog icon. When ready, it glows blue-white, with the two stick-click glyphs and a “+” between them displayed beside it. Firing the gear makes your character flash blue-white.

Once used, the icon goes dark and the glyphs give way to an hourglass and a countdown shown in tenths of a second. The gear is available again when the icon lights up. One Adrenaline Injector use timed on the HUD lasted about 33 seconds; however, the Burst Capacitor cooldown mod was already available, so this is not a guaranteed base figure.

Tactical Gear mod slots and how to fit them

Each gear item has three numbered mod slots, all marked SLOT LOCKED when it first appears. Reward banners unlock slots individually. A banner accompanied by a “HARD CASE EMPTIED” notice indicates a Hard Case reward, making Hard Cases one source of new slots and mods.

A slot unlock applies to one piece of gear only. Unlocking an Injector slot does nothing for the Disruptor, and the two can sit at different slot counts at the same point in the game. Each slot has its own list of mods, headed “SLOT 1 MODS”, “SLOT 2 MODS”, or “SLOT 3 MODS” with a counter out of 4. Three slots of four possible mods each is where the “MODS: x/12” total comes from, and a mod only fits its own slot.

To fit a mod, highlight the gear and press X to Modify, move to an open slot, then press A to change or equip a mod and pick one from the list. A fitted mod reads “EQUIPPED IN MOD SLOT: n” and the slot bar then offers X to Remove Mod, which confirms it is in place. New mods carry a yellow NEW MODS AVAILABLE tag and “!” badges until you look at them.

Mods collected from reward banners require registration through a Supply Cache before they can go into slots. After opening Hard Cases, return to a cache to fit the items you picked up.

Adrenaline Injector mods

The Adrenaline Injector is the piece you carry by default, so its mods are the clearest window into how slots work. Each slot holds one of a set of mods, and the two mods listed for the same slot below cannot both be fitted — you choose one.

These mods show what Adrenaline is doing while it is active: they stretch its duration, add health regeneration or defense, steady your recoil, or make Perfect Reloads easier during the window. The Injector’s counter climbs across the campaign as you find more, reaching 11/12 late on, so the six mods above are not the full set.

Sonic Disruptor mods

The Sonic Disruptor runs its own mod list, separate from the Injector’s. Its slot 1 mod is also called Retention Battery, but it is a different mod that increases Disruptor duration rather than Adrenaline time. Two more Disruptor mods — Reload Servo and Incendiary Emitter — appear as reward banners, though their full effects are not spelled out on screen.

At the first cache in Act 3, the Disruptor can have three open, empty slots while the Injector still has a locked slot—a reminder that each gear item tracks its slots separately. The Pulse Drone and Stim Vaporizer first appear with all three slots locked and no mods equipped; those slots and mods fill in as you progress.

Only one piece of gear can be carried at a time, so the choice at every cache is which single ability fits the fight ahead — a self-heal and damage boost, a stun, a squad-wide tag, or a healing zone — and which mods are worth spending your unlocked slots on. The Adrenaline Injector stays equipped by default, so you will want to visit a cache and switch deliberately when another piece suits the situation better.
