In Permafrost, the backpack you wear decides how many inventory slots you carry into the cold. It sits in its own equipment slot, and the grid you fill on the inventory screen (TAB) has exactly as many squares as that pack’s capacity. Five backpacks can be obtained, and they range from a cramped 15 slots up to 35. Here is how they stack up, where each one comes from, and the exact way to trade up to a larger one.

Quick answer: The Scavenger Backpack holds the most at 35 slots. Equip any larger pack by right-clicking it in your inventory grid and choosing EQUIP; the grid grows at once.

Permafrost backpacks ranked by capacity

Every backpack is ranked on a single number: how many inventory slots it gives you. That slot count is the pack’s capacity, shown in its tooltip next to its trade value. The ranking reflects Permafrost version 0.44.2 in solo Survival play.

2Mountain Backpack3030
3Utility Backpack2535
4Survivor’s Backpack2025
5Casual Backpack1520

No backpack carries cold resistance or armor, so none of them keep you warmer or safer. The warmth and protection come from the other five clothing slots.

Where each backpack comes from

Scavenger Backpack leads the rankings, offering 35 slots; you receive it for completing Closer to the Sun and The Art of the Deal. Logan’s people created it as one item in their set. Recycle it to get Cloth x2.

Mountain Backpack gives 30 slots and comes from completing Breaking the Radio Silence. A smaller version of the same pack exists with 25 slots and a value of 20, so check the tooltip before you rely on the larger figure.

Utility Backpack holds 25 slots. It is a reward from House into a Home and The Way Home, and one also sits inside an Insulated Crate out in the world for players who find it before finishing those quests.

Survivor’s Backpack carries 20 slots and is the first upgrade most players reach. It comes from Robyn’s reward box in Horizon, bundled with 2 Bandages, a Dish, 30 Bucks, 6 Cloth, and the Survivor’s Gloves recipe. Steps for claiming it are below.

Casual Backpack is the starting pack with 15 slots. The Survivor, Smuggler, and Hunter all begin wearing it, and Anna sells it. It is the pack everything else measures against.

How the backpack grid works

Open the inventory with TAB. The backpack sits in the equipment panel on the left, in the slot just to the left of your jacket. Its tooltip lists its value and its capacity, and that capacity is the exact number of squares in your carrying grid. A Casual Backpack shows a 5 by 3 grid of 15 slots; a Survivor’s Backpack lifts that to 20.

Quick slots 1 through 8 are separate from the backpack grid and do not shrink or grow with it. That split matters on death: the pack you are wearing stays on your body along with your clothes and quick slots, and only the loose items sitting in the grid drop to your tombstone.

How to equip a bigger backpack

Open the inventory with TAB and find the new backpack sitting in your grid, either picked up from a container or taken from a quest reward box.
Right-click the backpack to open the item action menu, then choose EQUIP. The right mouse button brings up the Equip, Drop, and Destroy options.

The grid immediately adjusts to match the new pack’s slot count. Your previous backpack appears there as a loose item; save it as a spare or sell it for a few Bucks.

First upgrade: the Survivor’s Backpack in Horizon

The quickest early jump, from 15 slots to 20, comes from Robyn in the settlement of Horizon. You only need one piece of Meat and a little cooking to earn it.

Complete Feel the Heat to get to Horizon, then find Robyn inside the log cabin bearing the green hand banner. She hands you Horizon’s Kitchen, a task that requires you to cook meat.
Go to the kitchen fire in the building with the pot sign. Load Wood as fuel, press X to turn it on, place Meat in the primary slot, and press R to cook.
Return to Robyn and pick the “Dinner is ready.” line to finish the quest. The red lockbox beside her armchair starts glowing. Stand next to it and press F to open it.
Press R to take everything. The box holds the Survivor’s Backpack along with 2 Bandages, a Dish, 30 Bucks, 6 Cloth, and the Survivor’s Gloves recipe. Opening it triggers the recipe unlock on screen.

In your inventory, right-click the Survivor’s Backpack and choose EQUIP. The grid expands to 20 slots and the Casual Backpack drops into the grid, where you can keep or sell it.

Jackets that add extra slots

Two jackets stack a few more squares onto whatever backpack you wear. The Renegade’s Coat adds 4 slots and the Technocrats Jacket adds 3. Those slots sit on top of the backpack’s count, so a 35-slot Scavenger Backpack paired with a Renegade’s Coat gives you 39 usable squares.

What players ask next

  • A bigger backpack does not slow you down. No weight value appears anywhere; items only take up slots.
  • Stacks count as one slot. Stone, Wood, Cloth and Meat stack, with Dish, Meat and most food stacking to 20, Herbs to 30, and Bandages to 5.
  • The dog gets its own container once it joins you in Dog Days, giving extra storage separate from your pack.
  • Storage is available early through the Building menu: a Small Wooden Chest costs 2 Wood and a Wooden Chest costs 5 Wood.

Until you unlock the quests that hand over the Mountain and Scavenger packs, the Survivor’s Backpack from Horizon is the most reliable early step up, and the Utility Backpack waiting in an Insulated Crate is worth grabbing if you pass one. Each pack’s number is whatever its tooltip capacity shows, so when in doubt, read the slot count before you equip.
