How Oxcarts Work in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Fares and Stopover Points

At West Vernworth a full ride costs 200 G, a stopover 100 G, and the bell post skips you past night to the next cart.

An oxcart is a paid ride from an oxcart station to the next town on its line. You talk to the driver standing by the cart, pay the fare from his menu, climb into the cart bed, and sit down. From the seat you can watch the road roll past or doze off to skip the trip. Carts run in daylight, so if you turn up at night or after the morning cart has left, you wait at the station until the next one is ready.

Quick answer: Hold the bell post’s “Await Oxcart (Hold)” prompt to skip to daytime, then hail the driver and pay 200 G for the full ride or 100 G for a stopover point before you board.

Where the West Vernworth Oxcart Station is

The West Vernworth Oxcart Station sits in Vernworth’s western square, the open cobbled yard just inside the city’s west gate on the far western edge of the town map, west of the Merchant Quarter. Look for a wooden cart with round shields hung along its side, a large ox yoked in front, the driver standing beside it, and a wooden post with a bell on it a few steps away next to an iron fire basket.

This cart is bound for the checkpoint rest town, which the driver tells you when you hail him. The destination name is spoken, not printed in the fare menu.

Waiting for the cart at the bell post

Passenger oxcarts run only during daylight, as the roads become much more dangerous after dark. Departures are usually scheduled for early morning; if you get there before or after that time, wait at the station for the next cart. You can wait for free at the bell post next to the cart.

Hail the driver first if you like. At night the driver on duty here is named Igon. He turns you down in a single line and no fare menu opens.
Walk to the bell post next to the cart. The prompt reads “Await Oxcart (Hold)”, shown with the Circle button and a hold ring around it.

Hold the prompt. The screen fades to black and comes back in daylight, with you still standing at the post. No menu asks how long to wait.
Nikk is the new man beside the cart, and he sells rides. If you arrive in the morning after the cart has already gone, the driver says he cannot offer a ride and the tutorial “Oxcart Service Hours” appears: “Most carts depart in the early morning, but if you arrive too late or too early, you can pass the time till the next departure at the oxcart station.” The fix is the same bell post and its “Await Oxcart (Hold)” prompt.

Fares at West Vernworth

Hail Nikk with “Hail (Hold to Talk)”. He names where the cart is going and asks for payment first, then the menu opens on the right with three rows in this order.

Paying does not put you in the cart. After you pay, you still have to climb into the bed and sit down yourself.

Stopover points, and how to pick one

A stopover point is a named location on the cart route where you can get off before its final destination. The game’s tip on this reads: “When enlisting the services of an oxcart, you can select multiple stopover points on the way to your destination, and even exit the cart upon arrival at each.” A stopover here costs 100 G, rather than the full 200 G fare, making it useful if your destination is in the open country between two towns.

Pick “Select Stopover Point” from the driver’s menu. A map screen opens with “Select stopover point.” at the bottom and a list down the left side.
Read the list. From West Vernworth the stopovers offered on this line, top to bottom, are:
  • Arboreal Walkway
  • Eltanda Mine – Village Ruins
  • Guerco Mountain Road – Foggy Area
  • Guerco Mountain Road – Wilds
  • Ancient Battleground – Valley

Move the highlight down the list. The map on the right follows to each stop, marked with a small cart icon on the road, so you can see where you would be set down before you pay. The screen’s prompts are “View Map”, “Confirm”, and “Cancel”. No price is printed beside the individual stops, since the 100 G is set by the menu row.
Confirm a stop and a box asks “Make a stopover at the selected location?” with “Yes” and “No”. Pick “Yes”, and you are back in the square with “-100 G” shown on the right of the screen.

Riding and dozing off

Climb into the cart bed. There are benches along both sides.
Sit on a bench. While seated, your prompts are “Doze Off” (Triangle), “Get Up” (Cross), and “Item Shortcut”. “Get Up” stays on screen the whole time you are seated.

Use “Doze Off”. The screen goes black and the trip is skipped. You can also stay awake and watch the road go by.
You wake still seated in the cart, stopped on a grassy stretch of road. A notice reads “Destination Reached” with the line “Arrived at selected stopover location.” and the region name “Vermund” shown at the left. The only prompt is “Get Up”. Stand, step off, and you are on foot from there.

Danger on the road

Monsters have been known to attack oxcarts on the road, and raids are not unheard of, so it pays to be ready for battle. Dozing from West Vernworth to the Arboreal Walkway stopover by day, the cart arrives without being attacked, but the stopover itself is not a safe spot. Enemies stand on the road right beside where the cart stops, and a kill there can earn you experience within seconds of getting down. Have your weapons ready before you stand up.

Traveling with a pawn who has the Guardian specialization prevents oxcart raids while they accompany you.

The Arboreal Walkway stop is a point on an open road, not a town or camp. From there it is a short trip west on foot along the road, over an arched stone bridge into Malachite Forest and down to Arboreal Ruins.

What the stopover list covers

The five stopover points listed above are the ones offered on this line from West Vernworth. This is not a list of stopovers or stations for other lines.
