Silver is one of the first crafting metals you’ll chase in Subnautica 2, and the shortage usually hits right when you need an upgraded air tank. The metal appears as small hand-pickable nodes and as larger deposits that need the Sonic Resonator to break apart. The fastest reliable supply sits in a cave system just north of your starting Lifepod.
Quick answer: Swim north from the Lifepod past the Coral Dome pillar, keep the adaptation tree on your right, and look for a hidden cave entrance under an overhang draped with Jelly Lei, just before you reach the ruined colony building. The cave is packed with small silver nodes you can grab by hand.

Why silver matters early
Silver is the gatekeeper for breathing longer underwater. You need it for the standard air tank, and it carries over into wiring kits, advanced wiring kits, system chips, and dedicated cores. Those electronics feed into base facilities and into building the Tadpole vehicle, so stockpiling silver early saves repeated runs later.

The most accessible silver pocket is reachable without any vehicle and without the Sonic Resonator. It sits in a small concealed cave a short swim from the Lifepod, well before you’d otherwise be sent toward the Old Habitat area.

Tip: Drop a portable locker near the entrance if you plan multiple trips. One can be found in the cave directly under the Lifepod, which avoids a return swim to base just to dump ore.
Secondary silver area: Old Habitat ruins
The broader silver hotspot is the cave network around the Old Habitat colony ruins, roughly 350 meters north of the Lifepod. NOA points you here during the mission to recover Chap’s black box, and the cave next to Chap’s habitation contains silver as part of that route. This area carries more nodes and larger deposits than the first cave, but takes longer to reach and clear.
Small nodes vs. large deposits
| Source type | How to collect | Tool required |
|---|---|---|
| Small silver node | Interact and pick up by hand | None |
| Large silver deposit | Break the deposit to extract ore | Sonic Resonator |
If you only see large rod-like deposits in an area, you’ll need the Sonic Resonator blueprint before they’re useful. The blueprint pieces are found inside flooded base interiors tied to story missions, so progress those if your only silver leads are big deposits.
Confirming you found the right cave
You’re in the correct spot when small silver clusters are visible on the cave surfaces with the standard pickup prompt, and the overhang of Jelly Lei is directly above the entrance. If you’ve passed the ruined colony building, you’ve gone too far north and should backtrack along the right-hand wall.
