The Vampire Killer is one of the few weapons in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse that is tied to the main story rather than hidden somewhere on the map. You earn it late in the run, after a long chain of bosses, a tarot quest, and an organ puzzle that finally opens the door to Death. Here is the exact path to it and what the whip does once Rose is holding it.

Quick answer: Defeat Death in Notre Dame’s Choir room, and Rose is handed the Vampire Killer automatically as the whip category’s Legendary weapon.

Requirements before you can reach the Vampire Killer

Three things have to be in place before the Death fight is even accessible. Each one depends on an earlier boss, so work through them in order.

  • Smash — unlocked by defeating The Builder in the Clock Tower. The Artist Tarot quest cannot be finished without it.
  • Brauner’s Paintbrush — found by defeating The Occultist in the Library.
  • Prepare Rose by leveling her up and gathering as many stat upgrades as possible; the battle with Death is among the toughest in the game.

Open the path to Notre Dame with the Artist Tarot quest

With Smash unlocked and the Paintbrush in hand, you can finish The Artist Tarot card quest. Completing it gives Rose access to Notre Dame, where the Death fight waits.

In the Main Hall, use Smash to shatter the statue at Brauner’s Atelier.
Watch the following cutscene and absorb Brauner’s Masterpiece Arcana.
Enter the lower room, the Gallery of Eternal Night, equip the Arcana, and examine the painting. This gives Rose a route to Notre Dame.

Clear Death’s magic from the Great Organ

Within Notre Dame, Death’s magic seals the door to him through the pipes. Play the required melodies on the Giant Organ in the Great Organ Room to dispel the magic and open the way to the fight.

Defeat Death to receive the Vampire Killer

The fight against Death in the Choir room is among the toughest in Belmont’s Curse, so expect to die a lot while learning it. Going in with Rose leveled up and your stat upgrades collected makes a real difference here.

Once Death goes down, Rose is handed the Vampire Killer straight away. You will know it worked when the whip appears in the Armoury under the whip category, marked as the Legendary weapon.

Vampire Killer stats and effects

WeaponCategoryAttackRarity
Vampire KillerWhip100Legendary

The Vampire Killer is the strongest whip in the game, and its attack strength of 100 reflects that. Like other whips, it deals more damage when the tip of the strike lands on an enemy, but its base damage is reliable enough that you do not need perfect spacing to make it work at range.

It also sets killed enemies ablaze, causing them to explode in flames. Those flames have a chance to damage any nearby foes, which gives the weapon some crowd value on top of its raw power. Between the damage and the effect, it is hard to go back to any other weapon once the Vampire Killer is in Rose’s hands.
