Contraptions And Mechanisms is a Carpenter side quest that unlocks the Sparkworks system in Enshrouded, letting you place levers, buttons, indicators, and traps around your base. You get it from Cade Hawthorn, travel to a Night Sanctum southeast of the Ancient Spire – Revelwood, recover the Sparkworks Tool from a sealed chest, then build the Sparkworks Workbench back home.
Quick answer: Take the quest from Cade Hawthorn, enter the Night Sanctum at night, loot the ornate chest for the Sparkworks Tool, then craft and place the Sparkworks Workbench at the Carpenter.
What you need before starting
The quest line runs through Cade Hawthorn, so he must already be rescued and set up at your base. Two conditions gate the run itself, and both are easy to miss.
- A glider, since the fastest route crosses open terrain from the Ancient Spire – Revelwood.
- Nighttime, because the Night Sanctum door only opens after dark.
- The Carpenter station and a Sheltered Bed at base to craft the workbench.

Open the door and clear the traps
The circular door carries a prompt reading “Can only be opened at night.” If you arrive during the day, wait or sleep until nightfall, then interact to unseal it.

Inside, the corridors are lined with spike traps and the lower chamber is flooded with lava. Grab the flame spark on the way through, time your movement past the spikes, and glide across the fiery floor from the narrow beams rather than dropping in.

Head for the upper back room. The ornate golden chest sits in the inner chamber, past the trap gauntlet.
Loot the ornate chest
Opening the large gold chest completes “Search The Trapped Night Sanctum” and unlocks the Sparkworks Workbench recipe at the Carpenter. The chest holds the following.
| Item | Type | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sparkworks Tool | Construction Tools | Common |
| Marksman Boots | Feet Armor (Level 10/15) | Legendary · 5 Physical, 5 Magical, +6 Stamina |
| Gold Coins | Currency | x12 |
| Sparkworks Workbench | Recipe unlock | Crafts at Carpenter |
Craft and place the Sparkworks Workbench
Return to base and open Cade Hawthorn’s crafting interface. The Sparkworks Workbench needs the Carpenter and a Sheltered Bed available, plus these materials.
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Metal Sheets | 4 |
| Archaic Essence I | 9 |
| Nails | 2 |
| Copper Bars | 2 |
Craft the workbench, then place it anywhere inside your base to finish the quest. Doing so rewards 100 XP and keeps the Sparkworks Tool in your inventory for editing logic connections.
You confirm the quest is complete when the final objective, “Craft And Place The Sparkworks Workbench,” clears and the quest leaves your log. Opening the placed workbench shows three new crafting categories: Buttons and Levers, Indicator, and Traps.
What the Sparkworks Workbench unlocks
The workbench produces logic props that the Sparkworks Tool then wires together. Switches, levers, light switches, and indicators connect to doors, lights, and traps, so one input can drive several outputs around a build. If you need more Sparkworks Tools later, they craft at the workbench from 4 Metal Scraps and 5 Archaic Essence I.
From here, the Sparkworks system ties into the wider logic and connection features that arrived with the 1.0 update, giving you the groundwork for traps, puzzles, and automated base elements rather than purely decorative structures.
