Familiars are the spirit companions you collect and fight alongside in Witchspire, and they pull double duty across combat, puzzle solving, production, and base work. You start with one, then build out your roster by defeating creatures in the world and bonding with the spirits they leave behind. The world is still in early access, so more companions are expected over time, but the species below appear in fixed regions for every player.
Quick answer: Defeat the creature you want, wait for its spirit to linger near the ground, then hold F to bond with it. A successful bond drops the Familiar into your inventory. Carry Incense to raise the chance the spirit lingers.
All Familiar locations in Witchspire
Creatures don’t sit on exact pixels. Think in terms of regions and hotspots, and return to the zone where you first saw a species to farm it. Four of the entries below are your starter options, and you pick one of them at the very beginning. Two species, Fien and Pheomina, only spawn at night.
| Familiar | Element | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Quol | Ethereal | Starter pick |
| Bril | Crystal | Starter pick |
| Locto | Lux | Starter pick |
| Fien | Nox | Starter pick; also Timberline Basin at night |
| Rockling | Nature | Starting area in Vyrs and Rockling Breeding Village |
| Taileaf | Nature | Left of the starting area and Mira Isles |
| Chirili | Lux | Chirili Crater |
| Charling | Lux | Chirili Crater and north of the Flight Pillar in Mira Isles |
| Loija | Lux | North of the Flight Pillar in Mira Isles |
| Lamloof | Nature | South of the Flight Pillar in Mira Isles |
| Granloof | Nature | South of the Flight Pillar in Mira Isles |
| Treetop | Lux | Second Root in Mira Isles and the Savannah in Shuddersands |
| Cindle | — | Savannah in Shuddersands |
| Shudder | Nox | Glimmering Dunes in Shuddersands |
| Bompus | Astral | Timberline Basin, on the beaches |
| Detrox | Astral | Timberline Basin near the Al’uunian Ruins |
| Lety | Nature | Outside the Al’uunian Tower in Timberline Basin |
| Xilvant | Nox | Common across Timberline Basin |
| Shardling | Crystal | Shard Caverns beneath Timberline Basin |
| Pheomina | Nature | Outside the Witchspire Tower, night only |
The Flight Pillar in Mira Isles is a useful anchor. Heading north from it leads toward Loija and Charling, while heading south puts you near Lamloof and Granloof. Beaches and crater rims are frequent repeat spawn points, so check high ground and coastline if a creature slips past you.

Bonding only becomes possible after a creature is defeated. When a bondable foe dies, a spirit ball forms in its place. It either shoots up into the sky, trailing a purple streak, or lingers near the ground for you to interact with.

You know it worked when the creature appears in your inventory. If the spirit shoots up and disappears, you did not miss a prompt. The lingering chance simply failed that time, and you will need to find another of the same species to try again.
Raise the chance a spirit lingers
Early on, most spirits shoot into the sky, and the odds of a lingering spirit ball are small. Two reliable methods push those odds higher.
The first is Simple Spirit Incense, crafted at the Workbench for x5 Spirit Dust. When deployed in combat, it adds +10% bonding chance for 20 seconds. Because the window is short, activate it only when you are already fighting or when a target is close to dying. Incense can also be looted from chests and boss drops, so clearing bosses feeds directly into Familiar hunting.
The second is the Spirit Charmer node in the Luminaries tree, which increases how often spirits linger. The first node unlocks once your Hearth reaches Level 3 and your Bonding Skill reaches Level 5. Upgrading your Hearth further opens additional Spirit Charmer nodes that keep improving your odds.
Tip: Save your Incense for Epic and Legendary creatures. Common and Rare Familiars are easy enough to bond with that burning supplies on them wastes materials you’ll want for tougher targets.
How to equip and switch Familiars at the Hearth
You can keep up to three Familiars equipped at once, but only one is active in combat at any time. Extra Familiars sit safely in your inventory, so you never have to drop one to collect another.
Familiar rarities and variants
Familiars come in four rarity tiers. Higher tiers are harder to bond with but carry stronger passive abilities. A handful of creatures also appear as Celestial or Shifties variants, which are alternate color patterns rather than separate rarities and follow the same bonding rules.
| Rarity / variant | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Common | Easiest to bond with; good for filling your active slot early |
| Rare | Slightly harder bond, stronger passive than Common |
| Epic | Lower bond chance; worth spending Incense on |
| Legendary | Hardest to bond; strongest passive abilities |
| Celestial / Shifties | Alternate color patterns of existing creatures; same tier and rules |
The fastest way to grow your collection is to pick farming routes that overlap with resources you already need. Rockling is the easiest early Nature target in Vyrs, Specra-style beach creatures pair with material drops, and Shard Caverns hands you Shardling alongside Copper Ore and Iron Ore. Keep a few Incense on hand, revisit the regions where each species spawns, and rotate your active companion to match the fight in front of you.
