Gothic 1 Remake: Unlock Razor Scutes via Beasts of Khorinis III

Reach the chest in Orc territory, hand the bestiary to Cavalorn, and collect three Lizard Scutes for the skill and 850 XP.

Reach the chest in Orc territory, hand the bestiary to Cavalorn, and collect three Lizard Scutes for the skill and 850 XP.

The third stage of the Beasts of Khorinis line in Gothic 1 Remake hangs on one item that sits deep inside hostile ground. The Bestiary of Khorinis III rests in a chest just past the gate to Orc territory, and recovering it is what triggers the quest and eventually teaches you to harvest Razor Plates. Because the route is patrolled by Orc Warriors and Orc Dogs, gear that lands at least +50 damage per hit makes the trip far safer.

Quick answer: Loot the Bestiary of Khorinis III from the chest in the cave just inside Orc territory, carry it to Cavalorn near the New Camp, then return with three Lizard Scutes to learn the Razor Plate harvesting skill and earn 850 experience points.

What you need before entering Orc territory

This stage follows the second bestiary quest, so you should already be working with Cavalorn before you go after the third volume. The book itself is the trigger. Without it in your inventory, the quest will not open in your journal.

  • Weapons or spells that deal roughly +50 damage so you can survive contact with Orc Warriors and Orc Dogs.
  • A few healing potions, since the approach forces fights in the open.
  • The Skinning skill if you want Orc Dog skins, which are used in crafting transformation scrolls.

Reach the gate to Orc territory

Leave the Old Camp through the south gate. This is the exit that points you toward the wilder southern stretch of the Colony.

Once outside, turn right and move into the woods. Expect three to four adult Scavengers along the way, so clear them or run past them.
Past the trees, follow the trail heading south until you reach a guard post. The guards there warn you that everything beyond the gate is Orc territory.

Clear the Orcs without a head-on fight

Stepping past the guard post draws an immediate ambush. At least four Orc Warriors and around five Orc Dogs rush you, and that pack can overwhelm an early character. You do not have to win that fight directly.

Push just far enough past the gate to make the Orcs and Orc Dogs aggro, then sprint back toward the guard post. The Warders stationed there will engage and kill the pursuers.
Repeat the pull-and-retreat until the area near the entrance is clear. This lets the guards do the heavy lifting while you stay alive.

Loot the bodies once the fighting stops. The Orcs carry weapons you can sell to Fisk for a solid number of nuggets, and with the Skinning skill you can pull Orc Dog skins from the dead hounds.

Find the cave and the Bestiary of Khorinis III

From the guard post, go straight ahead until the area opens up. You will spot a broken-down cart on the left with a dead Warder beside it.

Bear left until you find an opening in the wall on that side. Follow it to reach a small cave.
Open both chests inside the cave. One holds the book that starts the quest, along with several extra items worth grabbing.

Return to Cavalorn and collect three Lizard Scutes

Take the bestiary to Cavalorn’s cabin near the New Camp. Hand him the book, and he teaches you how to collect Scutes, then asks you to bring back three Lizard Scutes.
You do not have to travel far. Cohsel lives close to Cavalorn’s cabin, and the lizards you need are just past the timber mill behind his place.

Walk past Cohsel’s cabin to the logging station, then continue to the small body of water beyond it. Kill the lizards there and loot their corpses for Lizard Scutes until you have three.

Quest reward and how to confirm completion

Bring the three Lizard Scutes back to Cavalorn. He then teaches you to collect Razor Plates, the level 3 version of the Take Scutes skill. Learning it closes the quest and grants 850 experience points.

You will know it worked when the journal marks the quest as complete and the Razor Plate harvesting skill appears among your abilities. The experience gain also registers right after Cavalorn finishes the training.

Note: If the quest never starts, check that the Bestiary of Khorinis III is still in your inventory. The book is the trigger, so selling it or leaving it in the chest stops the chain before Cavalorn can react to it.

With Razor Plate harvesting unlocked, every Razor you cut down across the Colony turns into a usable trophy rather than a wasted kill, which keeps this stage paying off long after the 850 XP lands.
