Traits in Anime Squadron are passive bonuses you attach to your Units to push their stats higher. Each Unit can carry one Trait, and every Trait has its own rarity and effect, so the one you land changes how much extra damage, HP, range, or cost reduction a Unit gets.
Quick answer: Collect Trait Shards from the Story game mode, then take them to the Trait Roll NPC at the Upgrades waypoint. One Trait Shard equals one reroll.

Rolling is the only way to assign a Trait, and the result is random within the rarity weights listed above. You’ll need Trait Shards before you can reroll, and each one buys you a single attempt.

Which Traits are worth chasing
Because rolls are random, the practical plan is to keep rerolling and stop on the strongest result you can get. The three 20% Traits (Endure, Sight, Powerful) each add a flat 10% to a single stat, which is fine as a filler but easy to replace.
The high-end Traits change how a Unit performs, not just its numbers. Superior is the rarest at 0.1% and the most impactful, stacking +200% DMG, +300% HP, +30% RNG, and -15% CD on one Unit. Cloner spawns a second Unit, Rebirth brings a Unit back once at half HP, and Entrepreneur and Wealthy cut placement cost so you can flood the board faster. If you have Shards to burn, those are the results worth holding out for.
Note: A new roll overwrites your current Trait, so once you hit something rare like Cloner or Superior, stop spending Shards on that Unit to avoid replacing it.
