Cooking in Heartopia turns raw crops, fish, and foraged items into meals that sell for more coins and feed into your other hobbies. There are 58 recipes in total, spread across main dishes, jams and sauces, and mushroom pies. Most are bought from a single mentor as your cooking level climbs, while a handful unlock the moment you learn a base recipe.
Quick answer: Reach Developer Level 5, give a Hobby Expansion Ticket to Massimo outside his café to unlock Cooking, then buy recipes from him as your cooking level rises. Cooking base recipes with swapped ingredients permanently adds the new variant to your recipe book.

How to unlock Cooking in Heartopia
Cooking becomes available at Developer Level 5 (DG Level 5). When you hit that level, the game hands you a Hobby Expansion Ticket. That ticket lets you pick one of three hobbies: Insect Catching, Bird Watching, or Cooking.
If you spent your first ticket on a different hobby at Level 5, you can still pick up Cooking later. Extra Hobby Expansion Tickets become available at DG Levels 8 and 11, so you can return to Massimo then.

Add to Google Preferences →How to cook a dish
You cannot discover recipes by mixing random ingredients. You can only cook dishes you already know. Massimo sells a few basic ingredients, but to make the most of cooking, you should gather your own from your garden, your fishing trips, and foraging around town.
Note: Miss the spatula prompt and the dish burns, leaving you with a Bizarre Food or Bizarre Drink. Even salads can burn, so keep an eye on the timer if you want high star ratings.

All main recipes and how to unlock them
Most main dishes are purchased from Massimo, and each one opens up as you raise your cooking level. House Salad is learned the moment you unlock the hobby, while the two Bizarre items only appear when you burn a dish.

Jams and sauces
Mixed Jam is learned alongside House Salad when you first unlock Cooking. Once you have it, every other jam and sauce becomes available, since they are simply Mixed Jam made with four of a single ingredient. Cook each one to add it to your recipe book.

|---|---|---|
| Mixed Jam | Mixed Fruits (4) | Learned when unlocking Cooking |
| Apple Jam | Apples (4) | Unlock Mixed Jam |

Mushroom pies
Mushroom Pie is the gateway to this group. You unlock it by finishing Massimo’s Gossip Quest rather than buying it. After that, each specific mushroom pie follows the same pattern as the jams, swapping in a single mushroom type.
| Recipe | Ingredients | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Mushroom Pie | Any Mushroom (2), Wheat (1), Eggs (1) | Complete Massimo’s Gossip Quest |
| Oyster Mushroom Pie | Oyster Mushrooms (2), Wheat (1), Eggs (1) | Unlock Mushroom Pie |
| Shiitake Pie | Shiitake Mushrooms (2), Wheat (1), Eggs (1) | Unlock Mushroom Pie |
How to unlock recipe variants for more XP
Many base recipes accept different ingredient types, and each new combination is saved permanently as a separate dish. Cooking four tomatoes makes Tomato Sauce, but swapping the tomatoes for any fruit produces a Jam in that flavor instead. The same idea applies to mushroom pies and other dishes with an “Any” ingredient slot.
Each variant counts as its own recipe, so cooking them gives extra XP and more meal options when your ingredient stock runs low. Experimenting with these swaps is the fastest way to raise your cooking level, even though it is not required to progress.
You will know a recipe is unlocked when it appears in your recipe list at the stove and stays there for future cooks. If a dish you expected does not show up, the most common reasons are that you have not bought it from Massimo at the matching level yet, or you have not learned the base recipe that the variant depends on. Some ingredients like meat, coffee, and matcha only become usable once you own a recipe that calls for them.
Heartopia also rotates in limited-time recipes during seasonal events, including a run of movie-night themed snacks and drinks tied to the Dreamlight Cinematics event. Those dishes are only cookable while the event is live, so make them early if you want to complete the full collection before it ends.
