The Lurker’s Bite is one of the strongest one-handed swords you can pick up early in Gothic 1 Remake, and it costs you nothing but a short swim. It sits in a hidden cave near the New Camp, free for anyone willing to dive into the lake and feel their way through the dark.
Quick answer: Travel to the New Camp, drop into the lake on the right side near the rice farms, swim to the ravines on the far shore, and enter the cave. The chest holding the Lurker’s Bite is on the right inside. You need 15 Strength to equip it.

Lurker’s Bite stats and strength requirement
The Lurker’s Bite is a one-handed short sword that deals 21 edge damage. To swing it, you need 15 points in Strength. Without that, you can still carry and sell it, but you cannot equip it.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | One-handed sword (short sword) |
| Damage type | Edge |
| Damage | 21 |
| Required Strength | 15 |
| Coin/ore value | 60 |
That 21 damage puts it well above the rusty starter blades you find in the opening hours, which makes it worth the detour even if your Strength is still climbing toward 15.

The sword lives outside the New Camp, so your first job is getting there. You can do this within the first ten minutes of the game.
Tip: Bring a torch. The cave you are heading to is pitch black, and you will struggle to spot the chest without a light source.

Find the hidden cave and open the chest
Once you are inside the New Camp, the cave is a short swim away across the water.
What the chest contains
The cave chest gives you more than just the sword. You walk away with a small stack of crafting currency and a trophy as well.
- Lurker’s Bite (one-handed sword)
- 10x Ore Nuggets
- 1x Feather (Trophy)
You will know the pickup worked when the Lurker’s Bite appears in your inventory under one-handed weapons. If your Strength is already at 15, you can equip it immediately. If not, hold onto it until you train up.

Buy or sell it through traders
If you missed the cave or want a second copy, the Lurker’s Bite is also stocked by traders. Fisk sells it, with prices shifting depending on the camp and how far you have pushed the main story.
Going the other way, you can offload the sword for ore. Selling it to Sharky nets you 33x Ore Nuggets, which is a useful boost given how scarce ore is in the early game.
With 21 edge damage behind it and only a 15 Strength requirement, the Lurker’s Bite carries you comfortably through the opening chapters. Grab it from the cave for free, then keep swinging it until a heavier blade and the Strength to match come your way.
