Borderlands 4 runs on Gearbox’s SHiFT system, which hands out free Golden Keys and cosmetic items through short strings of letters and numbers. Golden Keys open the Golden Chests sitting in each faction’s hub town, and they’re one of the fastest ways to grab extra gear without farming for it.

A SHiFT account is required before any code can be claimed. If you don’t have one yet, create it for free through the official SHiFT account page using an email address or a linked PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam account. Even if you never plan on using codes, this account is also needed for crossplay and online matchmaking.

Where to spend Golden Keys

Golden Keys unlock the Golden Chests found in each region’s main faction town, and each chest costs one key to open. These chests reward high-quality gear, including a chance at Legendary items from the world drop pool, so it’s worth spending keys instead of hoarding them.

Other ways to earn Borderlands 4 rewards

Not every reward requires a code. Signing up for Gearbox’s newsletter and marketing emails through your SHiFT account preferences unlocks the “Hazard Pay” weapon skin, which then appears in the Reward Center once you start playing. To enable it, log in to your SHiFT account, open “User Preferences,” tick both the promotional messages and newsletter subscription boxes, and select “Update Preferences.”

Buying the Borderlands 4 ECHO-4 Bundle from GameStop includes a unique code worth five Golden Keys, valid through December 31, 2030. US residents can also earn the Butterfinger ECHO-4 drone skin either through that same bundle or through the official Butterfinger sweepstakes, though the sweepstakes entry may take time to arrive by email.
