Classes in Land or Die decide the perks, passive buffs, and starting tools you carry into each flight. Every Class levels up through its own set of in-game tasks, and each level adds bonuses that speed up refueling, fire control, piloting, or passenger care. Right now there are eight Classes, ranging from the free starter to a 60,000 Miles Legendary crew role.
Quick answer: You begin with the Passenger Class for free. The other seven are bought with Miles after you clear a specific unlock task, and each one gains stronger perks as you complete its five level milestones.

Once you finish a Class’s unlock task, it appears in the shop at the listed Miles price, and buying it grants Level 1 right away. From there, every milestone you clear bumps the Class up a level and applies the matching perk automatically. A practical path is to grow Miles on the free Passenger Class first, grab Ty or Gary early for cheap utility, then save toward the Legendary crew and pilot roles as your task counts climb.
