EverQuest Soulfire: How to Complete the Paladin Epic 1.0 Quest

Every faction requirement, item, and hand-in needed to claim the flaming Paladin sword.

Every faction requirement, item, and hand-in needed to claim the flaming Paladin sword.

The Soulfire is the reward for the second stage of the Paladin Epic 1.0 quest. It is a two-handed flaming sword that carries five charges of Complete Heal, which you can cast on yourself or an ally. The quest is long and touches trade skills, faction grinding, and a lot of travel across zones, so plan to start it around Level 40.

Quick answer: Build Temple of Life faction to at least Warmly, collect the Glowing Sword Hilt and a set of crafted and looted items, obtain the Testimony of Truth and Brilliant Sword of Faith, then hand the Glowing Sword Hilt, Brilliant Sword of Faith, Testimony, and A Note to Brother Hayle in the Southern Plains of Karana to receive the Soulfire.

Soulfire stats and what it does

The Soulfire is a Paladin-only weapon. Its main value is the five Complete Heal charges, not its combat output. It is slow with low damage for a two-hander, so many players carry a stronger melee weapon alongside it.

AttributeValue
Type2HS (two-handed slashing)
Damage23
Delay45
Stats7 Wisdom, 7 Strength
Effect5 charges of Complete Heal
RestrictionsNo Drop, Paladin Only
Weight5.0

There is no way to recharge the sword once all five heals are used. To get a charged Soulfire again, you must repeat the quest. Because the sword is Lore, you cannot hold two copies, so destroy your existing Soulfire just before the final hand-in when re-questing.

Faction you need before starting

Faction is the most important prerequisite. Brother Hayle, the final NPC, will not hand over the Soulfire unless you stand at least Warmly with the Temple of Life (the Priests of Life) in North Qeynos. Low faction does not just block the finish. It also causes trouble with other NPCs earlier in the chain.

The safest way to raise this faction is to find Lashun Novashine (Level 5) in North Qeynos, usually near the Temple of Life. Give him 2 gold (or 20 silver) at a time and repeat until your standing is high enough. Check progress by conning him or opening your Faction Standings window.

You will also need Knights of Truth faction later. Amiable is advised for the Altunic Jartin hand-in and Warmly for Merko Quetalis. If you fall short, killing Freeport Militia guards or Orcs in the Commonlands raises Knights of Truth standing.

Items and NPCs to gather first

ItemWhere / how
Glowing Sword Hilt (Hilt of Soulfire)Loot from Xicotl (Level 41) in Mistmoore Castle’s hot tub room
A Spider Venom SacKill A Dune Tarantula (Level 11–13) in North Desert of Ro
Fire Beetle EyeKill A Fire Beetle (Level 2) in the Commonlands
Cloth ShirtBuy from Germe Threadspinner (Level 45) in the Commonlands
Rat EarsKill A Large Rat (Level 1) outside West Freeport gates
Snake ScalesKill A Snake (Level 1) outside West Freeport gates
Water Flask + BottleBuy from a merchant that stocks them

Note: Buy the Cloth Shirt specifically from Germe Threadspinner. A regular Cloth Shirt does not appear to work for the later hand-in. Pick up more than one of each low-level drop to cover mistakes.

Xicotl spawns in the hot tub room inside Mistmoore Castle. Enter the secret door by the graveyard, pass the next secret wall, head up, then work left through another secret wall. Kill him to loot the Glowing Sword Hilt. If a Hardcore Heritage version of the zone is active, the higher-level Xicotl reportedly does not drop the hilt, so you may need to wait until that event ends.

Craft Bog Juice and Edible Goo

At a brew barrel, combine a Water Flask, a Bottle, and a Snake Scales to make Bog Juice. This is trivial at Brewing skill 21.
At an oven, combine a Fire Beetle Eye with a Rat Ear to make Edible Goo. This is trivial at Baking skill 21. Hold onto both crafted items for the prisoner hand-in later.

Earn the Testimony of Truth

In the Commonlands, find the traveling merchant Altunic Jartin (Level 20). He wanders, so search the road or hang south of the “Orc 2” camp and his hut. Give him the Cloth Shirt to receive a Token of Generosity. Amiable Knights of Truth faction is advised for this.
In West Freeport’s Hall of Truth, find Merko Quetalis (Level 61) toward the far north, then west into a side room. Give him a Spider Venom Sac to get a Token of Bravery. You will want at least Warmly with the Knights of Truth here.
Give Merko both the Token of Bravery and the Token of Generosity. This spawns Guard Willia (Level 6) in a Hall of Truth basement cell around p855, n215. Root her so she cannot flee, then kill her and loot the Token of Truth.
Hand the Token of Truth back to Merko. He gives you the Testimony, which identifies as “Testimony of Truth.” Keep it for the final hand-in.

Get the H.K. 102 key from Ariska Zimel

Go to the Seafarers Roost bar on the south side of the East Freeport docks. Buy four bottles of Drom’s Champagne from Gregor Nasin (Level 20).
Wait for the beggar Tykar Renlin (Level 10) to appear, then give him the Drom’s Champagne one bottle at a time. After all four, he hands you a blanket called Bunker Cell #1.
Head to the arena in the north of the zone and descend to the prison in the lower circular area. In the first cell on the right (north), around p785, n280, you will find A Prisoner (Level 6–15). This is Ariska Zimel. Give him the Bog Juice, Edible Goo, and Bunker Cell #1 to receive a key marked H.K. 102.

Claim the Brilliant Sword of Faith

Kill Sir Lucan D’Lere (Level 48) on the second floor of the Militia House in East Freeport to loot the Testimony of Truth that drops from him (it identifies as “Sir Lucan’s Testimony”). His respawn timer is four hours.

Warning: Killing Sir Lucan causes a major faction hit and makes you instantly kill-on-sight with the Freeport Militia. If you want to avoid that, have someone else who does not mind the faction loss kill him. Sir Lucan is a Paladin, so if he uses Lay on Hands you must effectively kill him twice, then kill his undead form a third time.

Go to the Paladin Guild in the Hall of Truth in West Freeport. Find Valeron Dushire (Level 61) along the far north back wall and give him the Testimony. He rewards you with the Brilliant Sword of Faith (Magic, Lore, No Drop, 2HS, 20 Damage, 44 Delay, 50 Mana, Weight 10.0, Paladin only).

Deliver the notes and finish the quest

In High Keep, give the H.K. 102 key to Assistant Kiolna (Level 25) near the bankers. She hands you A Sealed Note to deliver. If you are kill-on-sight here, shroud as a rogue and hide or sneak behind her to complete the hand-in.
Travel to the Southern Plains of Karana and locate Brother Hayle near the spires, standing by a tree around n1509, p2247 and surrounded by Gnolls. Clear the Gnolls if needed, then give him A Sealed Note. He returns A Note listing the items he wants.
Give Brother Hayle the Glowing Sword Hilt, the Brilliant Sword of Faith, the Testimony, and return A Note. He then hands you the Soulfire. You must turn in all items yourself, since master-questing this hand-in is no longer possible.

How to confirm it worked and common blockers

You know the quest is complete when Brother Hayle places the Soulfire in your inventory after the final four-item hand-in. If the hand-in does not complete, the usual causes are faction and inventory rules.

ProblemFix
Brother Hayle refuses the hand-inRaise Temple of Life faction to at least Warmly
Altunic or Merko won’t respondRaise Knights of Truth faction (Amiable for Altunic, Warmly for Merko)
Kiolna hand-in fails while KoSShroud as a rogue and hide/sneak behind her
Cannot receive a second SoulfireDestroy your current Soulfire just before the final step (it is Lore)
Xicotl not dropping the hiltWait until Hardcore Heritage ends, then kill the standard version

With faction handled early and the crafted and looted items stockpiled in advance, the rest of the chain is a series of straightforward hand-ins. The Soulfire itself is best treated as a five-charge emergency heal rather than a main weapon, but it remains a required step toward the full Paladin Epic 1.0 reward.
