Where Winds Meet: How to Beat Ye Wanshan in Bodhi Sea

Deflect his red attacks, dodge the golden ones, and kite with a ranged weapon to clear both phases.

Deflect his red attacks, dodge the golden ones, and kite with a ranged weapon to clear both phases.

Ye Wanshan is a Campaign Boss at the end of the Bodhi Sea questline in Where Winds Meet, fought inside a dreamlike arena in the Sundara Land area of the Qinghe region. He fights mounted, mixing a sword and a long glaive, and turns his weapons to flame in his second phase. His moves are aggressive but cleanly telegraphed, so the fight comes down to reading two things: red attacks you can deflect, and golden or yellow attacks you can only dodge.

Quick answer: Deflect his red attacks a moment after the flash to counter and drain his Qi, dodge all golden and yellow slams because they cannot be blocked, and stay in the middle of the arena to bait his sweep instead of chasing him on horseback.

Unlock the fight through the Bodhi Sea campaign

Ye Wanshan is not standing in Bodhi Sea itself. You reach him by finishing the Bodhi Sea campaign quest, which unlocks his Campaign version. Bodhi Sea sits in the far north of Qinghe, inside Sundara Land, hidden under thick mist that you cannot see through from the mountains or the shores of the Floral Expanse Beyond.

Approach Bodhi Sea directly on foot. It is a swamp, so you can only walk there, and crocodiles lurk in the water. Use Wind Sense as you move so you can steer clear of them, since you cannot dodge or jump away once they close in.
Ring the three drums scattered around the area. They do not appear on the map, and Wind Sense only reveals them when you are close, so listen for the sound. When a drum plays in the distance, a HUD soundwave shows the direction it came from. A fourth drum in the center is played by an NPC and cannot be used.
Return to the drummer in the center once all three are beaten. He vanishes, your character faints, and the screen distorts before you wake in a ruined village. Walk through the village to the Hero’s Tomb, and the boss arena lies just beyond it. You can retry the fight as often as you want, and you can leave through the pause menu if you need a break.

Read the color of every attack

Ye Wanshan only attacks with his weapons, which makes his wind-ups easy to spot once you know what each color means. Getting the timing right here is what lets you break his Qi bar and set up an Execute.

Attack typeHow to respond
Red attacksDeflect. There is always a slight delay, so wait for the wind-up and time your deflect just after the flash to trigger a counter and chip his Qi.
Yellow / golden attacksDodge only. These are unblockable and hit hard, so keep your distance and roll through them.
Charging attackCancel it with Cloud Steps from mid-range for a free punish, or parry the swing as he reaches you.

Note: If you parry a red attack too early you take the full hit. Wait for the strike to actually come out before tapping deflect.

Phase one: sword and glaive on horseback

In the first phase Ye Wanshan carries a large sword and a long glaive, and most of his attacks come from the glaive. He and his horse share one health bar, so it does not matter where you hit. He circles the arena constantly, so trying to run him down just burns your stamina and positioning. Hold your ground near the center instead and bait his passing sweep.

His Drive-By Sweep, where he drags the glaive across the floor as he rides past, is the move you will see most. Ready your deflect the instant his weapon drops toward the ground. When he stops in front of you and bangs both weapons together with a red glow, that is his cross slash; his horse stops kicking and looks straight down right before you should deflect. His airborne red attack sees him and the horse leap high before slamming the weapons down, so watch the tip of the glaive light up red and deflect on that flash.

Because he moves so much, firing a few arrows, especially fire arrows to build burning damage, is a reliable way to keep pressure on him while he is out of melee range.

Phase two: everything is on fire

Once his first health bar empties, Ye Wanshan seamlessly transitions into phase two and both he and his horse stay wreathed in flame for the rest of the fight. His old moves return, extended and stronger, and the fire makes the red and golden flashes harder to spot. Stay focused on his animations rather than just the glow.

The phase always opens with Flaming Meteor, a golden sequence that cannot be blocked. He explodes in fire, leaps into the sky, throws his glaive at you, then jumps to where it landed for a second explosion. When the tip of his weapon flashes bright yellow, sprint to gain distance. Move diagonally as he rises, dodge in that direction when he reaches the top of his jump to avoid the thrown spear, then keep moving away as he dives after it.

He also throws his glaive and follows with a yellow slam at the landing point. That slam is unblockable, so keep your distance and dodge rather than parry. His new mounted red charge, the Unstoppable Charge, uses the sword rather than the glaive, which can trip you up. If you already have space, stop moving on the first red flash, wait as he closes, and deflect only when the second red flash from his sword disappears. If you have Cloud Steps equipped, a prompt appears just before the charge, and casting it in time lets you vault over him for a counter.

His aerial red slam works the same as in phase one, so deflect a moment after the red flash. If the flames make the timing hard to read, watch the main body of his staff, which stays free of fire and glows red just before he jumps. Deflect enough of his attacks and his Qi bar collapses quickly, opening him up for heavy damage and an Execute.

Kite him with a ranged weapon

When Ye Wanshan takes a long route around the arena, switch to a ranged weapon so you can keep dealing damage without repositioning or worrying about his speed. The Panacea Fan, Inkwell Fan, Vernal Umbrella, and Soulshade Umbrella all work well for kiting him as he charges past. This keeps you controlling the tempo instead of getting dragged around after him.

Bringing Elder Gongsun as a companion also helps, since his high-mobility moves let him chase Ye Wanshan across the battlefield and land Qi damage that sets up your Execute.

Hero’s Realm version

The Hero’s Realm encounter leans on large arena-wide attacks rather than direct duels. Position yourself behind the boss or behind teammates, because most of his strikes land in front of him. A ranged weapon like the Vernal Umbrella lets a DPS player kite while staying out of his frontal range.

MoveHow to survive it
Flame ChargeHe glows yellow and rushes in a straight line. Step out of his lane.
Bladed InfernoFire rains where the floor glows red. Run away from the marked landing spots.

Rewards and finishing Bodhi Sea

Beating Ye Wanshan returns you to Bodhi Sea, where the malignant aura lifts and you can finally jump freely and see the swamp clearly. Before leaving, enter the now-open tower to complete the quest. Doing so unlocks a new Lightness Mystic Skill and Ye Wanshan’s dagger, which you can gift to one of his followers if you track them down later.

Your first clear of the Campaign Boss grants the following:

RewardAmount
Echo Jade50
Buddha’s Light Jade: Yin1
Medicinal Tales1
Zhou Coin30,000
Fury Harvest: Tome1
Oscillating Jade5

Clearing him also opens his associated Campaign Challenge, where you can refight the boss and spend energy for exclusive resources such as Jadeware Tiered Gear, a Bodhi Sea Cosmetic Chest, a Crimson Leaves Chest, and the Flaming Meteor Mystic Skill, which requires several repeat clears to obtain. Once you can consistently deflect his red attacks and dodge everything golden, both phases fall quickly and the fight becomes a matter of patience rather than raw speed.
