Halo: Campaign Evolved brings back the full cast of the ring-world story, from the Spartan behind the visor to the Covenant leaders pulling the strings. The remake counts 39 named characters, split across humans, artificial intelligences, a lone Forerunner reference, and the Covenant’s Prophets, Elites, and Hunters. Some walk beside you through the campaign, while others surface only in collectible Terminals or short mentions.
Quick answer: There are 39 named characters. Only John-117 (Master Chief) is playable, and in co-op every partner also plays as a Master Chief while the story still treats John-117 as the sole hero.
Master Chief and the human characters you meet on screen
Humans form the largest group in the campaign. John-117 is the only playable Spartan, and the rest are UNSC Marines, officers, pilots, and fellow Spartans who appear during gameplay or cutscenes. Several of these Marines, like Wallace Jenkins, tie directly into key story beats.

Add to Google Preferences →AI companions and Forerunner monitors
Artificial intelligences drive much of the story. Cortana rides with the Chief the whole way, while ancient Forerunner monitors guard the ring’s systems. Only two AIs, Cortana and 343 Guilty Spark, take an active role in the campaign. The rest live inside Terminal entries.
| Character | Affiliation | Appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Cortana | UNSC | Story character and the Chief’s Smart AI companion |
| 343 Guilty Spark | Forerunner | Story character; monitor of Installation 04 |
| 2401 Penitent Tangent | Forerunner | Monitor of Installation 05, seen in Terminals |

| Mendicant Bias | Forerunner | Powerful AI mentioned in Terminals |
| Librarian | Forerunner | Legendary figure mentioned in Terminals |
Covenant named characters: Prophets, Elites, and Hunters
The Covenant’s named figures fall into three species. The San’Shyuum Prophets lead the empire, the Sangheili Elites command its warriors, and the Mgalekgolo Hunters roam as its heaviest enemies. The Minister of Harmony is new to the remake and appears in the three prequel Operation: METEORITE missions, while Zuka ‘Zamamee spends the campaign hunting the Chief.
| Character | Species | Appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Minister of Harmony | San’Shyuum | Story character; first appearance in the remake |

Terminal-only, mentioned, and voice-only characters
A stack of names never join a fight and instead flesh out the world through the game’s text-based Terminals or brief references. Catherine Halsey, the creator of the Spartan-II program, is heard but never seen, and Miranda Keyes is referenced as the captain’s daughter without appearing.
| Character | How they appear |
|---|---|
| Antonio Silva | UNSC Major featured in Terminals |
| Ava Lang | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Dawkins | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Ethan Graves | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Marcus Hudson | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Melissa McKay | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Victor Ramos | UNSC character in Terminals |
| Bella Disztl | Mentioned in Terminals |
| “Doc” Valdez | UNSC medic mentioned in Terminals |
| Suzuki | Mentioned in Terminals |

Who voices the main characters
Halo Studios kept as much of the original cast as possible while recasting a few roles the veteran actors no longer perform. Steve Downes and Jen Taylor re-recorded their lines and added new dialogue for the expanded campaign, and Tim Dadabo picked up a second Covenant role. Foehammer’s lines reuse Tawnya Pettiford-Wates’ original audio rather than a fresh recording.
| Character | Voice actor |
|---|---|
| Master Chief (John-117) | Steve Downes |
| Cortana | Jen Taylor |
| 343 Guilty Spark and Minister of Harmony | Tim Dadabo |
| Avery Johnson | Keston John |
| Jacob Keyes | Keith Silverstein |
| Carol “Foehammer” Rawley | Tawnya Pettiford-Wates |
Between the on-screen fighters, the Terminal entries, and the reprised voice cast, the roster covers the full sweep of the ring-world conflict. Master Chief, Cortana, and 343 Guilty Spark anchor the story, while the Prophets, Elites, and Hunters give the Covenant its named faces across both the main campaign and the new prequel missions.
