DragonSword: Awakening Karma System Explained

How weapon cards work, how to ascend them with duplicates, and where Exclusive Karma materials come from.

How weapon cards work, how to ascend them with duplicates, and where Exclusive Karma materials come from.

Karma is the layer of power in DragonSword: Awakening that lives on a hero’s weapon, separate from your gear and separate from your character level. Each card carries base stats plus a special trait, and the strongest traits can rewrite how an ability behaves in combat. Because every card locks to a weapon slot, the choices you make there directly shape a hero’s damage output.

Quick answer: Put an element-matched Basic Karma on your main damage dealer first, then feed it duplicate copies of the exact same card to ascend it toward Rank VI. Save heavy Exclusive Karma investment for the one or two heroes you actually play.

Where Karma slots and what it changes

Karma installs onto a character’s weapon slot and nowhere else. Everything about upgrading a card happens from that slot, and none of it touches your hero’s overall level or armor pieces. Think of it as a power card bolted onto the weapon, giving both raw stats and a trait effect that can reshape a kit.

There are two categories. Basic Karma provides general stat or condition bonuses that many characters can share. Exclusive Karma is tied to one specific hero and adds a passive that modifies that hero’s signature skills, which makes it best-in-slot for a dedicated main.

Ascension with duplicate copies

The real power spike does not come from a level bar on the card. It comes from ascension, and ascension only accepts duplicate copies of the exact same Karma. At base, a card shows just its starting stats. Feed it identical duplicates and the special trait unlocks and grows stronger with each one.

The ceiling is Rank VI, which takes five duplicates in total. Every rank sharpens the trait, whether that is extra crit, more ailment damage, or a skill-specific modifier. Open the preview on a card before you commit a copy so you can see exactly what the next duplicate buys you.

Element matching is required

You can technically drop any card onto any hero, but the card carries an element, and that element must line up with the hero. If it does not match, the trait lines simply do not apply the way they should. A frost hero like Renia needs frost Karma; a bleed or physical card on her weapon wastes the important part of the effect.

Match the element first, then think about ascending. Committing duplicate pulls to an off-element card burns resources for almost no return.

How to get Karma cards

The campaign hands you a few cards as you progress. Everything else you buy or farm. The currency used to buy cards drops from random treasure chests and, more reliably, from the Tower of Trials once it is unlocked.

For Basic Karma duplicates, World Bosses are the most dependable daily source. Pick the boss whose element matches your main hero, and pair those runs with Tower of Trials and treasure-chest currency. Confirm you are on Patch 1.0.3 before farming, since it restored the World Boss and Sudden Mission daily resets.

Exchange Karma
Currency from chests and the Tower of Trials buys Karma at the exchange.

Exclusive Karma has two extra routes. Finishing a hero’s own character quest can award their Exclusive Karma directly, and copies you do not want can be dismantled for a dedicated exchange currency you redirect toward the cards you actually need. Always check the dismantle preview so you know exactly what you recover before scrapping anything.

Tower of Trials and transmuting Exclusive Karma

Exclusive Karma materials come from the Tower of Trials, which the main story does not hand you automatically. You unlock it by finding Cerese and completing her Bond Quest once her area opens. After that, the Tower becomes your main pipeline for the rare materials that crafting requires.

Inside, the floors are color-coded by control archetype rather than element, with sections that favor stun, aerial, or downed teams. There are three variants — the Tower of Gale, the Tower of Amplitude, and the Tower of Crushing — and Gale is where most players begin. Clear a floor’s boss for a star, and clear it fast enough (within 90 seconds) to earn the full star and material rewards. Clearing every floor across all three towers can net well over 160 Whirling Thoughts.

First-time clears also grant a yellow currency for basic Karma resources, and periodically a dark hole item, which is the piece you feed into transmutation to turn lesser materials into Exclusive Karma. To craft the cards, visit Shanoa the Alchemist in Orbis Royal Castle, near the cathedral.

Whirling Thoughts only drop from the Tower of Trials, so tower progress directly gates your late-game exclusive builds. Exclusive cards still ascend the same way regular ones do, by fusing duplicate copies, so plan for multiple pulls per card.

What to prioritize first

Early on, a matching-element Basic Karma on your main damage dealer is the cleanest power spike available, and even a low-rank version is worth equipping. Unlock the Tower of Trials as soon as Cerese’s quest is available, then start banking Whirling Thoughts.

Only after that foundation is set should you pour resources into Exclusive Karma, and only for the one or two heroes you run as mains. You do not need three fully built teams to make progress; a single solid team can push the towers and gather materials. Trying to collect or fully ascend every Exclusive card early spreads your currency too thin to finish anything.

One well-built team is enough to farm tower floors and start stockpiling materials.

Handled in that order, Karma stays a steady, deliberate investment rather than a resource sink. Match the element, ascend with duplicates, feed your mains first, and let the Tower of Trials cover the rest as you climb.
