Crossplay in Shift At Midnight only works inside Microsoft’s ecosystem. Xbox Series X|S consoles and the PC Game Pass or Microsoft Store version share a single matchmaking pool through Xbox Play Anywhere, so those players can team up freely. The Steam version sits on its own and matches only with other Steam players.
Quick answer: If everyone is on Xbox or PC Game Pass, you can play together. If one person is on Steam, you cannot join them unless the whole group is also on Steam. There is no shared lobby between the two sides.
Which platforms can play Shift At Midnight together
The developer, Bun Muen, confirmed the platform split before launch. Two networks exist side by side. One covers the Xbox side, the other covers Steam, and they do not connect.
| Combination | Can play together? |
|---|---|
| Xbox console ↔ Xbox console | Yes |
| Xbox console ↔ PC Game Pass / Xbox app | Yes |
| PC Game Pass ↔ PC Game Pass | Yes |
| Steam ↔ Steam | Yes |
| Steam ↔ Xbox or PC Game Pass | No |
Note: “PC” is not a single matchmaking pool. The Steam PC version and the Microsoft Store PC version run on different services, even on the same computer. Pick the storefront based on where your friends already play, not just on the fact that everyone is on a Windows machine.
Shift At Midnight is available only on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It is not on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch. You can wishlist or buy the Steam edition on its Steam store page.

Add to Google Preferences →Why the Steam and Xbox versions stay separate
The Xbox and PC Game Pass versions are linked because Shift At Midnight is an Xbox Play Anywhere title. A single Microsoft Store purchase covers both the console and Windows versions, and those two share one network pool. That is why a console player and a Windows Game Pass player can drop into the same shift with no extra setup.
The Steam version was built on Steam’s own online co-op and stays there. It does not reach the Xbox pool, and Xbox Play Anywhere does not turn a Steam purchase into an Xbox entitlement. Full crossplay that bridges Steam and Xbox has been mentioned as a possible future update, but there is no confirmed date. Treat the two pools as separate until an official patch says otherwise.
The most common “I can’t join my friend” problem is simply two players sitting on opposite sides of this split. Before troubleshooting anything else, confirm that everyone owns the game in the same ecosystem.
Does Shift At Midnight have cross-progression?
Cross-progression follows the same boundary as crossplay. Inside the Xbox ecosystem, Xbox Play Anywhere keeps your saves and achievements synced between the Xbox Series X|S version and the Windows Microsoft Store version through the same Microsoft account. Progress made on your console shows up on your PC and the reverse.
The Steam version keeps its own progress. Nothing carries between Steam and the Xbox or Game Pass side, so buying the game a second time on the other storefront starts you over.
How to invite friends on each platform
Xbox or PC Game Pass
Steam
Whichever side you are on, make sure everyone is running the same game version first. Mismatched builds cause “can’t join” errors that have nothing to do with the platform split.
Player count and local co-op
Shift At Midnight is designed for one to three players, which is a host plus up to two others. You can also work a shift completely solo. A patch on July 23, 2026 let a Steam lobby host raise the cap to six players, but Bun Muen has been clear that anything above three sits outside the intended balance and is not recommended for a first run.

There is no split screen or couch co-op on any platform. Multiplayer is online only, so every player needs their own device and their own copy of the game. Co-op leans on in-game proximity chat, where distance from teammates changes what they hear, so a working microphone is effectively required to coordinate during a shift.
Which version to buy
The decision comes down to one question. Match your storefront to your friends before you pay.
| Your friends play on | Version to buy |
|---|---|
| Xbox console or PC Game Pass | Microsoft Store / Game Pass version |
| Steam | Steam version |
Shift At Midnight launched on July 22, 2026 on Steam, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It arrived day one on Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC, and it supports Xbox Play Anywhere. You can check inclusion for your account on the Xbox store listing. Confirm the game shows as included in your own regional store before relying on Game Pass access, since catalog availability can change after launch. Once everyone is on the same side of the split and running the same build, you can start comparing notes on which customers are only pretending to be human.
