Ethnicity in Gakuran is a hidden combat stat, not a costume. The game rolls it for you the moment you build a character, and it decides the average height your character spawns around. That height then feeds directly into HP, damage, hitbox size, reach, and movement speed, so a single roll quietly shapes how your whole character fights.
Quick answer: There is no single best ethnicity. Roll European or African for the tallest, tankiest builds, roll Indian for the smallest hitbox and fastest movement, and keep Japanese, Latino, or Middle Eastern as balanced all-rounders.
How ethnicity is assigned and how rare each one is
You cannot pick your ethnicity from a menu. It is rolled automatically during character creation, right after you set your name and gender, the same way your fighting style is generated. Because the game models a Japanese high-school setting, the odds lean almost entirely one way.
Japanese lands roughly 95% of the time. The other five ethnicities share the remaining 5% combined, which puts each one at about a 1% chance. There is no published breakdown separating the individual foreign odds, so treat any single rare rate as an estimate.
| Ethnicity | Approx. chance | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese | ~95% | Common |
| European | ~1% | Rare |
| African | ~1% | Rare |
| Middle Eastern | ~1% | Rare |
| Latino | ~1% | Rare |
| Indian | ~1% | Rare |
To confirm what you rolled, open the menu from the arrow on the left of the screen and go to the Stats tab. Your ethnicity sits on the player card alongside height, age, and fighting style. If the card shows your ethnicity and height, the roll registered correctly.

Add to Google Preferences →Height by ethnicity for males and females
Each ethnicity has its own average height, and your character rolls around that number rather than landing on it exactly. Rolls close to the average are far more likely than extreme rolls. Male characters run roughly 12 to 13 cm taller than female characters of the same ethnicity, but the ranking from tallest to shortest stays identical across both.
| Ethnicity | Male average | Female average |
|---|---|---|
| European | 178 cm (5’10”) | 165 cm (5’5″) |
| African | 175 cm (5’9″) | 162 cm (5’4″) |
| Middle Eastern | 173 cm (5’8″) | 160 cm (5’3″) |
| Japanese | 171 cm (5’7″) | 159 cm (5’3″) |
| Latino | 170 cm (5’7″) | 158 cm (5’2″) |
| Indian | 167 cm (5’6″) | 155 cm (5’1″) |

European sits at the tall end and Indian at the short end, with Japanese near the middle. You can still roll short as a European or tall as an Indian, it is just less likely when your ethnicity trends one way.
How height changes your combat stats
Ethnicity itself hands you no direct bonus. It never adds flat HP, damage, or stamina on its own. Everything you feel in a fight comes from the height attached to your roll. A middle-of-the-pack height sits at roughly 100 HP, and moving taller or shorter trades one set of strengths for another.
| Build | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Taller (European, African) | More HP, higher damage, longer melee reach | Bigger hitbox, slower movement and swings, longer cooldowns |
| Shorter (Indian, Latino) | Smaller hitbox, faster movement and combos, quicker recovery, lower cooldowns | Less HP, lower damage, shorter reach |
| Average (Japanese, Middle Eastern) | Balanced across every stat | No standout strength in any single area |
The differences become obvious mainly at the extremes. Maximum HP in particular swings hard as height climbs or drops, while mid-range heights stay close to that 100 HP anchor. This is why tall characters lean tanky and slow, and short characters lean fragile and fast.
Which ethnicity is best for your playstyle
The best roll depends entirely on how you fight, since raw power and mobility sit at opposite ends of the same scale.
- European and African are the top picks for a tank. European gives the highest average height at 178 cm for males, meaning maximum HP and damage, with African close behind at 175 cm. Both suit players who hold space and trade blows in the middle of a fight. Wrestling pairs well here, since its grapple and slam heavy attack benefits from the extra resilience.
- Indian is the pick for pure mobility. At 167 cm for males it delivers the smallest hitbox and the fastest movement, rewarding aggressive dodging and quick openings.
- Japanese, Latino, and Middle Eastern sit in the middle and work as solid, balanced options for almost any fighting style.
Note: Fighting style and combat skill matter more to your win rate than height alone. Chasing a perfect ethnicity is end-game min-maxing, not a beginner priority, and the default Japanese roll is perfectly viable for every style.
Rerolling your ethnicity
Ethnicity cannot be rerolled on its own. It is tied to your full character generation, so changing it means rerolling your entire trait set from the Stats menu, which also resets hair, face, height, and last name.
Rerolls are paid in Robux, and there is no free method tied to the roll itself, though some free codes hand out reroll spins. Because a non-Japanese ethnicity is roughly a 1-in-20 chance, and the exact height you want inside that ethnicity is a second random step, chasing a rare tall or short combo can get expensive.
Before you spend anything, read the height that came with your current roll. That number decides your HP, reach, and speed, so a Japanese roll whose height already fits your playstyle is worth keeping over gambling for a rarer label. The ethnicity name carries no combat advantage by itself, only the height it pairs you with does.
