Dungeons & Dragons Crossovers: World of Warcraft, Star Wars, and Fortnite

Wizards of the Coast is pulling Azeroth, a galaxy far, far away, and five Fortnite islands into the D&D multiverse.

Dungeons & Dragons is opening its multiverse to outside franchises. At its Gen Con 2026 keynote, Wizards of the Coast introduced a crossover line called “Universes Beyond,” a branding it is lifting directly from Magic: The Gathering. The plan starts with a full World of Warcraft expansion, teases a Star Wars book, and sits alongside a separate D&D collaboration that already dropped inside Fortnite.

Quick info: The first Universes Beyond release is Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, arriving November 3, 2026, followed by a Star Wars book (Season of Rebellion) on June 15, 2027. Separately, five D&D-themed Fortnite islands are already live and playable right now via island codes.

Confirmed Universes Beyond books and release dates

Two crossover books have been confirmed so far. The first is a sprawling world book that drops the setting of Azeroth into D&D, complete with an adventure module built around Warcraft’s Lich King. The second, teased at the tail end of the keynote, is a Star Wars expansion set for the following year.

What Universes Beyond means for D&D

The name will be familiar to Magic players. Universes Beyond has run in Magic: The Gathering since 2021, producing entire sets and decks themed around properties like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Final Fantasy, and even SpongeBob SquarePants. Financially it has been a hit for Hasbro, with Magic reaching an all-time revenue high of $1.72 billion in 2025, a spike that lines up with its shift toward crossover releases.

The trade-off is what worries longtime players. As Magic leaned into third-party licenses, its own multiverse and recurring characters faded into the background, which became a running point of frustration for its established fanbase. D&D carries the same risk, since it also has decades of original settings and characters that players are attached to.

D&D crossovers that already exist

This is not the tabletop game’s first outside team-up. Official D&D products have already been built around Rick and Morty and Stranger Things, and D&D Beyond hosts a Minecraft crossover in the form of Monstrous Compendium Vol. 3: Minecraft Creatures. Universes Beyond formalizes that approach into a named, ongoing line rather than one-off tie-ins.

The D&D Fortnite islands and how to play them

Separate from the books, Wizards of the Coast brought D&D into Fortnite for the first time in a collaboration with community creators Chartis and Teravision Games. The five islands were built with Epic’s Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) toolset as part of a “launch and learn” initiative to test how D&D lands with Fortnite’s audience. The spread covers a PvP arena, a social hub, a platformer, a co-op boss fight, and what is billed as the largest co-op roguelike in Fortnite history.

Every island is set in the Forgotten Realms. Players visit landmarks including the Yawning Portal tavern in Waterdeep, the Spine of the World mountains, and the volcano Mount Hotenow near Neverwinter, and fight familiar villains such as the ancient red dragon Klauth and the necromancer Valindra Shadowmantle.

D&D Icons brings classic settings back

The same keynote offered a counterweight to the crossover push. An initiative called D&D Icons is reviving older, original campaign settings, including Ravenloft, Greyhawk, and the dark, long-controversial Dark Sun. For readers wary of licensed franchises crowding out D&D’s own worlds, this signals that the core settings are still on the release schedule.

Taken together, the direction is clear. D&D is running licensed crossovers and returns to its own classic worlds on parallel tracks, with the World of Warcraft book leading the charge and Star Wars close behind. Whether the balance holds, or whether the original settings get sidelined the way Magic’s did, is the open question hanging over the whole line.
