League of Legends Patch 26.16 Preview: ADC Buffs and Roaming Support Nerfs

Riot is dialing back the bot lane mage meta with a heavier out-of-lane support penalty and a wave of marksman buffs, live August 12.

Bot lane mages have quietly taken over a role that traditionally belongs to marksmen, and Riot is stepping in with Patch 26.16. The next League of Legends update pairs stiffer penalties for roaming supports with a stack of ADC buffs, all designed to pull the pendulum back toward classic bot lane play without deleting mages from the position entirely.

Quick answer: Patch 26.16 hits live servers on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. It raises the out-of-lane support gold and XP penalty from 25% until level 3 to 33% until level 5, buffs Berserker’s Greaves, Fleet Footwork, Heal, and ADC base magic resist, and hands out champion changes including Azir, Kennen, and Gwen buffs.

Patch 26.16 release date

Patch 26.16 arrives on the live servers on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following the standard two-week cycle. The update after it is scheduled for Wednesday, August 26. Alongside the balance work, three new skins land in the shop: Faerie Court Gwen, Faerie Court Lulu, and Faerie Court Bel’Veth, each priced at 1350 RP.

Why Riot is nerfing roaming supports and bot mages

Mage bot lanes made up roughly 20% of picks at MSI 2026, and that share kept climbing through the Esports World Cup and the KeSPA Cup before bleeding into ranked. Lead Gameplay Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison traced the shift back to Patch 26.11, when melee supports were buffed and enchanters were nerfed. At the same time, players worked out ways to slip past the anti-roaming and anti-lane-swap controls built into the support quests, and the two shifts stacked. The result was a hard swing toward roaming supports and away from traditional ADCs.

Riot still wants mages to be a viable bot lane option, but sees the current balance as too far in their favor. Part of the reasoning is that mage win rates can be misleading. Champions like Brand, Swain, Ziggs, Veigar, Seraphine, and Xerath often win by poking a lane opponent out or scoring 2v2 kills, and they post strong numbers even in inexperienced hands. Phroxzon compared the effect to Malphite sitting at a 52-53% win rate, which reflects an easy champion rather than a broken one. The goal is to close the gap with marksmen, not flatten the two classes into the same thing.

Support roaming penalty change

This is the heaviest single change in the preview. The gold and XP penalty applied to a support who leaves lane goes from 25% until level 3 to 33% until level 5. That is two extra levels of coverage and a bigger cut to resources while it is active.

In practice, a support who cheat recalls, rotates mid, or helps the jungle before level 5 comes back to lane with a real experience deficit. Roaming stays possible, but it now has to pay off with a kill, a tower, or an objective. For the enemy ADC, that means fewer early 2v1 windows and a mage opponent who has to stay in lane and manage the wave longer.

ADC buffs in Patch 26.16

Several underused marksman tools are getting buffed to help ADCs survive early mage pressure and win the 2v2. The exact numbers for these buffs have not been finalized yet.

ChangeEffect
Berserker’s GreavesBuffed to make it a stronger first-boot purchase
Fleet FootworkBuffed to help hold lane against poke
ADC base magic resistIncreased, so early magic poke hurts less
ADC magic resist growthReduced, keeping marksmen fragile to magic late game
Heal (summoner spell)Buffed to strengthen 2v2 skirmishes

The magic resist swap is deliberate. Marksmen tank early spells better during the laning phase, where the mage matchup is most painful, but stay a little more vulnerable to magic damage later, when the ADC is expected to be winning through damage scaling anyway.

Nasus is the outlier here. Riot wants to give Nasus top a relative buff while keeping his jungle power neutral, so the changes shift stats around rather than adding raw strength everywhere.

System and item changes

Beyond the bot lane focus, Patch 26.16 touches a broad set of items, runes, and systems. Sundered Sky is being reined in as part of an effort to improve meta diversity, while the support role quest is being reworked to punish roaming further. Hail of Blades, ADC magic resist, and Black Cleaver are being adjusted rather than straight buffed or nerfed.

TypeItems and systems
BuffsSunfire Aegis, Eclipse, Tiamat, Tier 3 Sorcerer’s Shoes, Tier 3 Berserker’s Greaves, Berserker’s Greaves, Jungle Pet, Fleet Footwork, Runaan’s Hurricane, Sterak’s Gage
NerfsSundered Sky, Tier 3 Mercury’s Treads, Support Role Quest
AdjustmentsHail of Blades, ADC Magic Resistance, Black Cleaver

The preview is a direction, not a locked changelist. Riot is still testing more experimental ideas and has yet to confirm the exact values for the Berserker’s Greaves, Fleet Footwork, and Heal buffs. If you play ADC, this update is built to help you, so it is worth revisiting your matchups against mages now. If you main a roaming support, plan on staying in lane longer before level 5, because leaving early costs a lot more once these changes go live.
