Nintendo used a roughly 20-minute Direct to open up Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the tactical RPG heading to Switch 2 on September 17. The presentation walked through the game’s four playable heroes, its combat, a time-rewinding safety net, and what you actually do between the tournament matches at the center of the story.
Quick answer: The Direct confirmed four heroes with separate story routes, a rewind system that lets you undo a unit’s death, a familiar weapon-triangle combat model, a free-roam city called Dagsion, and a September 17 launch on Switch 2 with pre-orders live now.
Four heroes, four different stories
The setup is a competition called the Heroic Games, held in the capital of the Dagdan Empire. The winner is granted a single wish, and four fighters have entered for very different reasons. You pick one, and the story you play changes based on that choice, with each character weaving their own version of events.
| Hero | Motivation |
|---|---|
| Cai | A young boy trying to save his father, who was wrongfully imprisoned. |
| Dietrich | A swordsman entering the games to satisfy his craving for a stronger opponent. |
| Theodora | A queen who worships the goddess of death and night, fighting for her kingdom and her goddess. |
| Leda | A musician seeking revenge after learning her father’s killer has entered the games. |

Add to Google Preferences →Battle rewind replaces the fear of permadeath
The biggest mechanical change shown is a rewind feature. If a unit dies, you can wind the clock back to any earlier point in the fight and try again. The Direct demonstrated exactly that, showing a character fall in battle before the player jumped back to a previous round to rework the plan.
In practice this softens the series’ long-standing permadeath tension. Instead of losing a unit for good, you can rethink positioning and orders from an earlier turn until the encounter goes your way.
Combat sticks to the weapon triangle, with one surprise
If you have played a Fire Emblem game, the fighting will feel familiar. Weapon types still trade off against each other. Axes are high-risk, high-reward, swords act as reliable all-rounders, and the rest of the roles slot in around them.
The one clear break from tradition was a character pulling out a gun on an enemy during a fight, a weapon the series is not known for. Beyond that moment, the core turn-based tactics look like a natural continuation of past entries.
Exploring Dagsion between matches
Between rounds of the Heroic Games, you get free time in Dagsion, the empire’s capital. You can scout future rivals by watching their matches, then buy and upgrade your own gear before heading back into the arena.
That downtime also covers the wider progression loop. You can train units, build bonds to recruit new allies, and travel beyond the city walls for extra experience in battles and dungeons. Preparation time is limited, though, so you cannot clear out every activity before the next match starts.
Release date, Dagdan Collection, and pre-orders
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launches for Switch 2 on September 17. A special edition, the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Dagdan Collection, packs in a steel game case, character art cards, a map of Dagda, and an artbook.
Pre-orders are open now through the Nintendo eShop listing if you want to lock in either version ahead of launch.
With the Direct done, the game moves from a set of teasers to a fairly complete picture: four routes to choose from, a rewind system that changes how much a single mistake costs you, and a city hub to manage in the gaps between fights.
