Chrono Warfare Tower Defense Units Ranked (August 2026 Tier List)

Every playable unit sorted by credit efficiency, DPS, and clear reliability for the current launch build.

Chrono Warfare Tower Defense hands you units through steady progression instead of random pulls, so the real question is not what you can roll but what deserves your credits and board space first. The roster splits cleanly into ranged carries, melee bodies, and support pieces, and a handful of them outperform the rest on nearly every stage. The ranking below sorts each unit by how much value it returns for its cost.

Quick answer: Prioritize Archer, Ballista, and Pack Hunter as your core. Lean on Legionary, Hunter, and Plebeian while you build toward them, and hold off on Knight, Siege Workshop, and Torcher unless a specific stage forces the pick.

Full unit tier list

Tiers run from S (the meta carries) down to C (situational or overpriced). One detail shapes the whole list. There is no farm unit in the game, so any unit that costs a lot without returning proportional damage or utility drops in value automatically.

UnitTierWhy it lands here
Archer
Archer
SThe most credit-efficient ranged DPS with clean scaling. Once online, it carries the rest of a run.
Ballista
Ballista
SHeavy ranged output but pricier than Archer. Sell damaged ones to recover value. Rewards good micro.
Pack Hunter
Pack Hunter
SThe only reliable answer to invisible enemies since its ability reveals them, and it stays useful elsewhere.
Legionary
Legionary
AThe best melee body and a strong starter, more efficient than both Knight and Clubman.
Hunter
Hunter
ACarries you until Archers or Ballistas arrive. Spam early, then convert into a boss killer at full upgrade.
Plebeian
Plebeian
ACheap utility used to bait the Spartacus stun and shield your meta towers.
Forge
Forge
BStrong alongside Archers or Clubman for armor and crowd clears, but heavily level-dependent.
Arbalist
Arbalist
BA swingy ranged option. Great on the right map, wasted credits on the wrong one.
Clubman
Clubman
BHandles crowds decently, but Legionaries usually do the melee job better.
Kiln
Kiln
BA support DPS that cleans up leaks rather than leading. Shines on select stages, including the Pack Hunter unlock.
Knight
Knight
CSolid stats but poor price-to-value. Legionary or Clubman does the job for less.
Torcher
Torcher
CA weaker stand-in for Archer, Hunter, and Ballista, but a required piece for the Pack Hunter unlock stage.
Siege Workshop
Siege Workshop
CVery expensive for a non-essential effect. Fine on easy stages, a liability on hard ones.

Why the S-tier carries the game

Archer is the anchor of the meta. Its damage scales cleanly with upgrades, and its cost stays low enough that you can field several without stalling your economy. Once a few are running, most stages solve themselves.

Ballista trades that low cost for raw punch. It hits harder than Archer but demands more attention, since a heavily damaged Ballista is worth selling to reclaim credits rather than leaving it to soak hits. Treat it as the high-skill upgrade to your ranged core.

Pack Hunter earns its S-tier spot on utility alone. Its ability reveals invisible enemies, which nothing else on the roster does reliably, and it still pulls weight in normal fights. That combination makes it a permanent answer to a problem the rest of your board cannot solve.

A-tier bridge units to build around early

The A-tier picks are what keep you alive before your S-tier core comes online. Legionary is the standout melee body and one of the strongest openers, giving you a front line without draining your credits. Hunter fills the ranged gap, working as cheap spam early and folding into a dedicated boss killer once fully upgraded.

Plebeian is the utility glue. It is cheap enough to throw away, which is exactly the point when you use it to bait the Spartacus stun or shield your meta towers from damage they should not be taking. None of these three carry a run on their own, but skipping them makes the early waves far harder than they need to be.

Situational B-tier picks

The B-tier units are strong in narrow windows and dead weight outside them. Forge pairs well with Archers for damage and with Clubman for armored crowd clears, but its payoff depends heavily on the stage and its own level. Arbalist can outperform your standard ranged units on the right map and burn credits on the wrong one, so it is a pick, not a default.

Clubman handles crowds but usually loses the comparison to Legionary. Kiln works best as backup DPS that mops up whatever slips past your main line, and it spikes in value on specific stages, including the level where you unlock Pack Hunter. Bring these when a map asks for them and leave them out when it does not.

C-tier units to skip for now

Knight has real stats, but its price does not match what it delivers, and Legionary or Clubman covers the same role for less. Siege Workshop is the clearest casualty of the missing farm unit. It costs too much for an effect you rarely need, and while it can coast on easy stages, its price becomes a problem on hard ones. If a farm unit ever ships, Siege becomes far more appealing.

Torcher is a weaker version of Archer, Hunter, and Ballista in normal play. It only earns a slot when a stage lets you exploit fire, and it is genuinely required for the Pack Hunter unlock, where it keeps woodpiles burning.

How to unlock Pack Hunter

Pack Hunter is not handed to you through normal progression. You unlock it by lighting every campfire on Wave 18 using the Torcher ability, which is why Torcher sits in your loadout for that stage despite its low general ranking.

Place Torchers next to the wood pallets before the stage ramps up. Positioning them close to the fuel is what lets a single ability trigger light everything nearby.
Fire the Torcher ability whenever a winter storm hits or your towers freeze. Those events threaten the campfires, so keeping the woodpiles lit through them is the core of the unlock.
Keep every campfire burning as Wave 18 plays out. Once all of them are lit at the right moment, the unlock completes and Pack Hunter becomes available for future runs.

How this ranking was decided

Placements weigh three things: credit efficiency, raw DPS or utility, and how reliably a unit clears stages across the current roster. Because the game has no farm unit, expensive picks that do not return proportional value are pushed down, which is what separates the C-tier from everything above it.

This ranking reflects the August 2026 build, while Chrono Warfare Tower Defense is still in development across its Prehistoric Times and Ancient Civilizations eras. Balance can shift with each patch, so expect some units to move after future updates.
