The Mercenary hits hard up close, but it is slow by default, and slow melee gets kited and punished in Mistfall Hunter PvP. The fix is to stop treating the class like a sniper that charges one big swing and instead build it around Hammer Spin, a mobile skill that keeps you moving, grinding through staggered enemies, and applying pressure for the whole fight. Pair that with heavy survivability, and you get a Mercenary that can chase, tank, and out-duel opponents who expect an easy kite.
Quick answer: Run the Hammer with an HP ring and HP necklace, take Hammer Spin and Warhammer Sling as your two skills, and stack the Endless Whirlwind and Seeker synergy for speed. Open with Warhammer Sling to slow, then spin through the target while Titan Hammer Strike builds stun stacks.

Why Hammer Spin beats charged attacks in PvP
The Mercenary can only equip two of its nine skills, so the whole build hinges on that choice. Charged abilities deal big numbers, but they turn you into a stationary target waiting for a single hit to land. Against players who dodge and keep distance, that plan falls apart.
Hammer Spin flips the problem. It keeps you mobile and lets you stay glued to a target instead of pausing to wind up. It also grants super armor, so minor hits will not knock you out of the skill and drop it on cooldown. The Hammer is the pick over sword and shield here because of its raw damage and that near-constant super armor.

| Skill | Role in the build |
|---|---|
| Hammer Spin | Your core damage and mobility tool. It grants super armor to resist minor knockouts, and everything else in the build exists to make it hit harder and spin faster. |
| Warhammer Sling | Your opener. It slows the target and deals high damage, letting you close in and start spinning. Lead every push with this before committing to the spin. |

Talents that carry the Hammer Spin loop
Talents split into two jobs here. Some make the spin faster and deadlier, and the rest keep you alive long enough to stay in melee range. Endless Whirlwind is the anchor, and Indomitable Will and Steel Skull are the defensive backbone.
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Endless Whirlwind | The most important piece. Hammer Spin becomes faster with more hits, and it raises your movement speed and rotation so you can chase while spinning. Pairs directly with the Seeker affix. |
| Titan Hammer Strike | Normal and Hammer Spin attacks build Stun stacks. At six stacks the enemy is stunned, giving your spin a window for maximum damage. |
| Steel Sanctuary | Extends the super armor duration from Hammer Spin, stopping enemies from staggering you out of the skill. |
| Shield Break | Boosts your normal attacks, especially against shields. You use normals often here to recover energy for the next spin. |
| Combo Energy Recovery | Unlocked through Shield Break. Recovers energy as enemies create distance after a spin, and normal attacks regenerate it faster. |
| Indomitable Will | Core defensive talent for any Mercenary. Works with the Unyielding and Stoic affixes. |
| Resilient Body | Builds physical resistance stacks when you use Hammer Spin or charge abilities. Can be swapped for Hammer of Convergence to spike resistance during charges. |
| Steel Skull | Reduces the damage from headshots, which classes like the Blackarrow use to land critical hits. Optional and easy to replace. |

Gear and affix priority
Weapon choice is settled: the Hammer for its damage and endless super armor. For accessories, prioritize rings and necklaces that give HP plus physical or magical resistance. Magical resistance is worth leaning into, since it cuts the damage from Sorcerers and Seers who try to keep their distance.
The remaining gear slots matter less for their type and more for their rarity. Higher rarity means more affix slots, and this build wants those slots filled with survivability and movement. You can also stretch your affix budget by visiting Sigrid and mixing a brew from her Victory Wine menu, which adds affix points on top of what your gear provides.
| Affix | Effect | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Stoic | Raises physical and magical defense under 50% HP, and above level 5 heals 15% HP when you drop below 30% HP. The heal is the real draw for surviving PvP trades. | Priority |
| Seeker | Increases movement speed by up to 12% while you hit enemies with Hammer Spin. Max its level to keep spinning through staggered targets. | Priority |
| Unyielding | Stacks up to four times at level 5 and boosts resistance, pairing with the build’s defensive talents. | Important |
| Tenacious | Raises HP per level and, at level 5, adds healing that stacks with Stoic. Take it if you have spare slots. | Good |
| Aegis | Grants defense and physical resistance to soak more melee damage. | Good |
| Elusive | Reduces dodge energy cost, keeping you active in combat. | Good |

How to play the fight
Note: The whole loop lives or dies on staying close. Every talent and affix here is meant to keep you in melee range longer, whether by speeding up the spin, extending super armor, or healing you through the low-health window.
Where this build struggles
Ranged classes that keep distance are the main threat. Sorcerers and Seers try to poke from range, which is why magical resistance on your accessories matters. The Blackarrow aims for headshots to score critical hits, and that is the reason Steel Skull earns a slot, even if it is the easiest talent to drop for something you prefer.
Play to the plan and the Mercenary stops being the slow bruiser opponents expect. With movement speed feeding the spin and heavy survivability holding you in the fight, you become a target that chases relentlessly and refuses to be kited.
