Soul Splinters are the marquee itemization addition in Diablo 4 Season 15, the Season of Hell’s Legacy. They slot into your rings and amulets the same way a normal gem does, but instead of a plain stat they hand you a resistance plus a powerful signature effect that always drags a drawback along with it. The whole system rewards you for building around a penalty you can safely ignore.
Quick answer: Eight Soul Splinters are available. Each can be socketed into jewelry, with up to three equipped at once, and grants elemental or physical resistance plus a benefit with a drawback. Four rarity levels exist, and the Horadric Cube lets you raise them.
All eight Soul Splinters and their effects
Rarity affects every number listed here, making Unique versions much stronger than Magic ones. These figures use the Unique tier. Black Soulstone differs from the rest because it grants All Stats rather than one resistance.
| Splinter | Resistance | Bonus | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
Anguish | 4,375 Fire | +35% Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed | Primary Resource costs increased by 30% |
| Sin | 4,375 Lightning | +40% Maximum Life | Maximum Primary Resource reduced by 30% |
Lies | 4,375 Cold | +100% Gold and Crafting Material drops, +25% XP | Permanently Weakened and Vulnerable |
Black Soulstone | 50 All Stats | +5% damage per absorbed soul (15 sec) | +0.5% damage taken per soul; stacks do not refresh |
Pain | 4,375 Poison | +40% Damage Reduction | 30% reduced Movement Speed |
The Mother | 4,375 Physical | Unhindered; touching enemies makes them Vulnerable 10 sec | Stunned 4 sec after touching 250 enemies |
Hellfire | 625 All Elements | +100% (multiplicative) increased damage | Lose 100% Critical Strike Chance |
Damnation | 4,375 Shadow | Killing an Elite pack raises Monster Power by 1 (25 sec) | You make the fight harder for yourself |
The Splinter of Anguish crit and attack speed bonus is additive, while Sin’s Maximum Life, Black Soulstone’s soul damage, and Hellfire’s damage are all multiplicative, which is why those three punch well above their listed percentages.

Add to Google Preferences →How Soul Splinters socket and stack
Any empty ring or amulet socket can hold a Soul Splinter, just like a resistance gem. With two rings and one amulet available, you may equip up to three Splinters; placing one in either jewelry slot produces the same result.
Two copies of the same Splinter do not double up. If you equip duplicates, only the stronger version applies, so mix different Splinters rather than trying to stack one twice.
The returning legacy Unique Leoric’s Crown is important despite being a helm. During Season 15, the Crown treats itself as jewelry and boosts the effect of a gem socketed in it by 75 to 100%. Since Soul Splinters are gems designed for jewelry, this raises a Splinter’s signature effect while leaving its drawback unchanged, making the helm attractive to many builds.
Which Soul Splinter to pick for your build
The penalty is the point. The best Splinter is whichever downside your build can shrug off, not whichever bonus reads biggest. A few pairings stand out.
Hellfire is the cleanest damage pick for anything that does not crit. Poison, bleed, burning, and other damage-over-time setups lose nothing by giving up crit chance, so a flat 100% multiplicative boost is close to free power. Slotting it into a crit build, by contrast, is self-sabotage.
Black Soulstone is the strongest option for speedfarming and dense content like Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, and Waking Nightmares. Each kill stacks damage fast, and the extra damage taken barely registers when most of what could kill you is already dead. It falls flat against a lone boss, where no new souls spawn.
Anguish is the offensive choice for crit builds that generate resource faster than they spend it. The 30% resource cost never shrinks with rarity, so only run it if you never run dry.
For defense, use Pain or Sin. Pain sacrifices 30% Movement Speed to provide up to 40% Damage Reduction, a manageable exchange for high-mobility classes using a dash, teleport, or charge. Sin greatly increases Maximum Life but reduces your resource cap; it suits builds with low-cost spending and rapid refills, while builds that scale from Maximum Resource should avoid it.
Lies serves farming exclusively. Its gold, materials, and experience gains are excellent, yet the permanent Weakened and Vulnerable states restrict it to content you already clear comfortably. Many players place it in Leoric’s Crown before other Splinters because the increased drop rate improves all later farming.
The Mother and Damnation are the situational picks. The Mother spreads Vulnerable just by moving through packs and keeps you Unhindered, but the self-stun after enough contacts is deadly unless you have reliable Unstoppable uptime. Notably, its Unhindered effect cancels Pain’s movement penalty, making the two a natural combo. Damnation raises Monster Power after each Elite pack for tougher, higher-reward runs, so it only makes sense once your build already handles the extra difficulty.
Rarities and upgrading in the Horadric Cube
There are four Soul Splinter rarities: Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique. Moving up the rarity ladder increases both resistance and bonus, making Unique the target for min-maxing.
To advance a Splinter, amalgamate five matching Splinters of one type and rarity into a single piece from the next tier. That means five Magics produce one Rare, five Rares produce one Legendary, and five Legendaries produce one Unique. Starting at Magic and reaching Unique requires 125 Magic Splinters of the same type, although drops of higher rarity reduce the practical total.
Most drawbacks stay identical across every tier, so a rarity bump strengthens the upside only. Two exceptions: the Mother’s self-stun triggers after more contacts at higher rarity, and Damnation’s Monster Power duration grows.
Mass-salvaging every gem at the Jeweler also destroys your Splinters. Before doing that, favorite them or place them in your stash.
How to get Soul Splinters
Farming Splinters is the core Season 15 grind, and the most consistent way to target a specific type is Escalating Nightmare Dungeons. Each Splinter maps to a gem reserve based on the resistance it gives. Pick the matching reserve affix between floors and the Horadric chests on that floor drop the corresponding Splinter.

| Splinter (resistance) | Nightmare Dungeon reserve |
|---|---|
| Anguish (Fire) | Ruby Reserve |
| Pain (Poison) | Emerald Reserve |
| Lies (Cold) | Sapphire Reserve |
| Sin (Lightning) | Topaz Reserve |
| Hellfire (All Elements) | Diamond Reserve |
| Damnation (Shadow) | Amethyst Reserve |
| The Mother (Physical) | Skull Reserve |
| Black Soulstone | Does not drop from reserves |
In the Nightmare Dungeon portion of your War Plans, select Branching Pathways. It provides three portal options between floors, making it dependable for choosing the reserve you want. Since the third floor has the highest drops, hold that reserve selection for the later floors. Bosses reward Escalating Sigils, and five regular Nightmare Sigils can be amalgamated into one Escalating Sigil so the cycle continues.
Beyond the dungeons, several other sources feed the grind:
- Reputation Architect Cages, earned from every reputation point past the seasonal cap, contain guaranteed Splinters in Magic or Rare quality.
- The Undercity secret vendor spawns after slaying a Portal Prankster goblin and sells one or two Splinters for Forgotten Souls (around 666 each) plus gold, with one free restock per visit.
- A random Splinter can drop from Helltide Ruptures, with overlapping Ruptures offering the highest density.
- The first Uber Tristram (Echo of Tristram) kill on a character grants a guaranteed Unique, but only Lies, Black Soulstone, or the Mother.
You will know a Splinter is working the moment it is socketed: its resistance and signature effect appear on the item tooltip, and your character sheet reflects the new bonus.
Don’t confuse these with Prime Evil Splinters
Season 15 also introduces a separate progression system built around the Prime Evils, and its rewards are also called Splinters. These are not the socketable gems above. Through the Season of Hell’s Legacy questline you collect the Splinter of Terror (Diablo), the Splinter of Destruction (Baal), and the Splinter of Hatred (Mephisto), then bear one during the Legacy of Hope quest. Each grants an Iconic Power that fires automatically in combat and works across every class.

Only one Prime Evil power can be active at a time, and each has its own reputation track that modifies different endgame activities. Terror boosts Helltides and Infernal Hordes, Destruction boosts Kurast Undercity and Lair Bosses, and Hatred boosts Nightmare Dungeons and The Pit, while all three modify the Tree of Whispers.
Your first choice locks until you clear the Diablo II: Durance of Hate (Nightmare) capstone dungeon at Torment VI, after which you can swap through the largest Waking Nightmares. Reputation is tracked separately per Splinter, so switching never erases progress on the others.

Between the eight socketable Soul Splinters and the three Prime Evil powers, jewelry and seasonal progression carry a lot of the buildcrafting weight this season. Match each socketed Splinter to a drawback your build ignores, funnel your farming toward the reserve you need, and push everything to Unique in the Horadric Cube for the biggest numbers.
