The hospital floods with green gas, the floors turn to slime, and a goo monster starts patrolling the halls. That is the Hazmat Team special shift, and it now shows up during ordinary runs of Animal Hospital. It does not change your job. You still register and treat patients on a timer, but you do it while a slow, hungry anomaly named Slimebert wanders the building.
Quick answer: Keep a Fire Extinguisher in your inventory, spray Slimebert only when it directly blocks you, and rush every patient check-in so the shift timer ends. The slime and the monster both vanish once the event shift is complete.
When the Hazmat Team shift triggers
The event does not lock to a fixed shift number. It lands somewhere in the early-to-mid shift range, most often between Shift 11 and Shift 17, and the exact point drifts from run to run. There is no known way to skip it or force it to a specific shift, so you reach it simply by playing your shifts in order.
You get clear warning before it starts. Dr. Harlow leaves the hospital and walks outside to meet the Animal Corporation Hazmat team at the entrance. Shortly after, a pop-up warns that the air feels slimy, the air turns green, and slime begins spreading through the rooms. That green fog is your signal the event has begun.

Note: reports on the event length differ. Some runs clear it in a single event shift, while others describe the slime lasting two consecutive shifts before the contamination disappears. Treat it as a short window either way and finish patients quickly, because the sooner your list is clear, the sooner the shift ends.

When the event begins, a corporation van arrives and Hazmat workers enter the reception room. Once you stamp their form, they start walking the halls and vacuuming up the green slime with their equipment. They take their time, so the mess stays around while they work.
Soon after, a new patient named Slimebert checks in. He is a large green goo monster who drips slime as he wanders and will eat any player he touches. Being eaten is not an instant loss. Slimebert chews for a moment and then spits you back out, but it wastes time and drains your Sanity Bar, with a single grab costing roughly 20 Sanity. He can also swallow patients and workers, though only players take the real damage.

Slimebert moves slowly, which makes him easy to walk around. The main risk is getting cornered in a tight room while you are checking a patient in. Keep an escape route in mind and you can avoid most grabs without ever fighting him.
How to deal with Slimebert
Slimebert cannot be killed. Nobody has found a way to remove him during the shift, and he always gets back up. The only tool that affects him is a Fire Extinguisher. Spraying him knocks him back, briefly stuns him, and stops him from eating you in that moment. He mutters a complaint about the cold and goes inactive for a short time before roaming again.
Because he respawns his aggression the longer the round runs, chasing him is a waste. Treat the extinguisher as a defensive item, not a weapon.
You will know it worked when the patient list finishes and the shift closes. At that point Slimebert disappears on his own and the green contamination lifts from the hospital.
The Firefighter class and why it helps
The Firefighter class was added alongside this event and is built for it. It costs 1,100 Animal Coins, leans on Utility and Sanity as its main stats, and starts every game with a special Fire Extinguisher that recharges automatically in your inventory instead of needing a refill station. That auto-recharge means you can stun Slimebert as often as needed without running dry.
| Level | Benefit |
|---|---|
| 1 | Start with a special Fire Extinguisher and +1 maximum inventory slot |
| 2 | Recover 1 Sanity whenever you put out a fire |
| 3 | Immunity to Sanity drain from fires and +10 maximum Sanity |
The class is not required. Any class can survive the shift as long as you keep an extinguisher on hand and use it when Slimebert blocks you. The Firefighter simply makes the round smoother, and its fire immunity matters most in high-shift runs where fire hazards stack up on top of the slime.
Speed up the run to reach the event
- Rush the earlier shifts. Prioritize completing check-ins over chasing perfect patient scores so you reach the event window faster.
- Do not hunt Slimebert. Every second spent tracking him is a second not spent clearing patients.
- Stay mobile. Slimebert’s slow speed means good routing keeps you out of his reach without using the extinguisher at all.
Sam, the cleanup NPC after the event
Once you survive the slime event, a new NPC in a hazmat suit named Sam arrives at the hospital. Sam is a calico cat you can hire for $250, and he cleans up slime contamination and takes out Hiders, the anomalies that blend into the walls. He leaves when there is no slime to handle and returns whenever the mess builds up again, which makes him useful when a run gets hectic.
The redacted form and Harlow’s warning
The shift hides a story beat worth watching. During check-in, a Hazmat worker slides an Animal Corporation containment request across the counter with almost every line redacted, taps the counter twice, and walks off without a word.

After the shift, Dr. Harlow steps outside to speak with the person in the hazmat suit and asks whether they have the delivery. Their reply is never shown, but it clearly rattles him. He responds that they have not met, trails off, and warns that if it happens again you should run and not ask questions.

None of it is explained yet, but it points to something larger going on at Animal Corporation. The event chaos is manageable once you know the pattern, so grab an extinguisher, keep your patients moving, and let Slimebert bounce off you until the shift ends.
