Ar-Henok the Betrayed is a unique Olog-hai in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the kind of procedurally generated orc the nemesis system builds around a player’s actions. He first appears as a Legendary captain in an icy cavern, then resurfaces later as the Overlord defending a region’s fortress. His name and status both change because of what the player does to him, which is the whole point of how he works.
Quick answer: Ar-Henok starts as a Level 85 Cursed Slaughter Tracker (Legendary). Shaming him instead of killing or recruiting him drops him to Level 73, flips him to a Cursed Outlaw Tracker, and sets up his return as a fortress Overlord.
Who Ar-Henok the Betrayed is
Ar-Henok is an Olog-hai, one of the heavier troll-like orcs in the game. He wears a skull-themed helm and carries a jagged weapon, and he belongs to the Slaughter Tribe at the point you first meet him. His full title at that stage is Cursed Slaughter Tracker (Legendary), sitting at Level 85.
The encounter opens as a Death Threat. Ar-Henok has accepted a challenge and waits in an ice cavern, with the mission listing a reward of +13062 XP for the fight. Talion, controlled at Level 80 and sharing his body with the wraith of Celebrimbor, enters the cavern and takes him on alongside a group of his minions.

Add to Google Preferences →How shaming changes him
Once Ar-Henok is beaten in the cavern, the game offers a choice. Rather than killing him or dominating him into your army, the player picks Shame. Shaming humiliates a captain, and the effect on Ar-Henok is concrete rather than cosmetic.
- His level falls from 85 to 73.
- His classification changes from Cursed Slaughter Tracker to Cursed Outlaw Tracker.
- He survives the encounter instead of dying, so the nemesis system keeps him in play.
The on-screen cue is a SHAMED banner over him, followed by a Mission Complete notice reading “Ar-Henok the Betrayed survived.” That survival line is what tells you the shaming worked as intended and that he will come back somewhere else.

Ar-Henok returns as the fortress Overlord
Overlords are the strongest orcs in Mordor, and each one commands a fortress that controls its region. You can only take a region by assembling an assault force, laying siege, and killing the Overlord inside the throne room. Ar-Henok, now a Level 73 Cursed Outlaw Tracker, has taken up exactly that role, speaking down from the fortress walls as the siege begins.

The attacking side rallies first. Ur-Dag Ice-Mountain, a Fiery Marauder Beastmaster (Legendary), and Ur-Masi the Regal, a Marauder Tracker (Legendary), give the charge speeches before Talion’s forces push the outer wall.
The capture points and defending captains
A fortress siege runs through a set order of victory points. Each one has to be taken while the defending captains stationed there are cleared out. In this fortress the zones fall in the order Gatehouse, Warriors’ Quarter, Courtyard, Inner Gate, and High Courtyard.
| Capture point | Defender cleared | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Gatehouse | Rûg the Weak | 83 |
| Warriors’ Quarter | Zûgor Manhunter | 84 |
| Courtyard | Shag Ear-Collector | 85 |
| Inner Gate / High Courtyard | Pushkrimp Slave-Maker | 84 |
| Inner Gate / High Courtyard | Borgu Chain Driver | 83 |
| Inner Gate / High Courtyard | Fûbar the Slaughterer | 84 |
| Inner Gate / High Courtyard | Dûgz the Cruel | 85 |
| Inner Gate / High Courtyard | Ugol the Maggot | 85 |
The first push breaches the outer wall. Siege beasts and spire traps come down, and the Gatehouse is secured as Rûg the Weak, a Poisonous Outlaw Beastmaster (Legendary), is decapitated.

Combat then moves into the second district, where Zûgor Manhunter, a Dark Tracker (Epic), is killed and the Warriors’ Quarter falls.

The Courtyard comes next, with Shag Ear-Collector, a Feral Trickster carrying Arrow-Proof, Vault Breaker, and Ward traits, defeated there. Pushing through the Inner Gate and High Courtyard then clears the rest of the roster, including Dûgz the Cruel, a Terror Commander (Legendary), and Ugol the Maggot, a Feral Beastmaster (Epic).

The throne room fight and how it ends
With every victory point held, the keep doors open and Talion walks into the throne room. Ar-Henok confronts him from his throne before the fight starts, and he does not stand alone, a group of minion defenders join in.
The fight uses arrows, flurry attacks, and wraith abilities to wear him down. It closes on an execution Quick-Time Event, the blue prompt the game shows for finishers, which ends with Talion decapitating Ar-Henok the Betrayed. The Decapitated marker is the confirmation that the Overlord is dead and the fortress is taken.
What makes Ar-Henok worth noticing is not a single stat line but the arc the nemesis system builds for him. The same orc you humiliated in a cavern climbs back to the top of a fortress, and the siege is the system paying that grudge back. Middle-earth: Shadow of War originally launched on October 10, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and a Nintendo Switch 2 port is set to arrive later.
