Awakening Runes Explained: All Types and How to Unlock in DragonSword

The five rune types, their rarities, and the exact material you need to open a rune slot.

The five rune types, their rarities, and the exact material you need to open a rune slot.

Runes give heroes in DragonSword: Awakening a fixed stat boost, and picking the right ones is a big part of squeezing more out of a build. The trick is that the game hands you runes long before it explains how to slot them, so many players end up with a pile of them and no way to use them.

Quick answer: Runes drop from Raids and come in five types (Resolve, Guardian, Vitality, Concentration, Amplification). Equip one by opening a rune slot on any 4-star or better piece of gear, which costs one Anonymous Artisan’s Crafting Tool.

All five rune types and what they boost

Each rune type raises one preselected stat. There are five, and the stat it affects never changes, so you choose a rune based on what your hero needs.

RuneStat boosted
ResolveFlat ATK
GuardianFlat DEF
VitalityMax HP
ConcentrationCritical Hit Chance (CRIT Rate)
AmplificationCritical DMG

For most damage-focused teams, Resolve and Amplification are the standout picks. Extra ATK helps at every stage of the game, and stacking Critical DMG makes it easier to push past a 150% threshold without sacrificing other stats. Guardian, Vitality, and Concentration are situational and depend on the hero and the fight you are building for.

Rune rarities and why the same rarity can vary

Every rune type comes in five rarities, from weakest to strongest: Damaged, Intact, Refined, Radiant, and Perfect. Rarity is not the only thing that decides a rune’s strength, though. There is a random roll on top of it, so two runes of the same rarity can land on different values. That means an Intact rune can sometimes match the effect of a Damaged one, which is normal and not a bug.

Where runes come from

Runes are Raid rewards. When you open a Raid, the game lists the recommended level and the loot you can expect, so you can target the ones that drop runes. The first Raids that reliably hand out runes open up around level 50, though some players start seeing a few earlier depending on progress.

How to unlock a rune slot and equip a rune

Having runes in your inventory is not enough. You have to open a rune slot on a piece of gear before anything can go in, and only certain gear qualifies.

Pick a piece of gear that is 4-star or better. Lower-rated gear cannot hold runes at all, so check the rating before spending anything.
Open the equipment screen and select the item. Click the locked rune slot on that piece, or press Triangle/Y while examining it, to begin the unlock.
Spend one Anonymous Artisan’s Crafting Tool to open the slot. Each slot you open needs its own Crafting Tool.
Slot the rune you want. Once it is placed, the stat it boosts will appear on that gear’s totals, which confirms the slot is active.

Where to get Anonymous Artisan’s Crafting Tools

The Crafting Tool is the gatekeeper for rune slots, and there are several ways to stock up on them.

  • Clearing Raids
  • Progressing through the story
  • Completing the Ashen Ruins and The Greaveyard Where Tragedy Sleeps dungeons
  • Buying one for 100 Adventurer’s Emblems at the Exchange shop

In the Exchange, the tool sits under Materials, then Special, listed as Anonymous Artisan’s Crafting Tool. If you are short and want to unlock more slots quickly, that shop route is the most predictable source.

Combining low-tier runes into stronger ones

Low-rarity runes are not wasted. Through synthesis you can merge several runes of the same type into a single higher-tier rune with a stronger bonus. The runes must match in type for the combine to work, so keep your spare Resolve, Amplification, and other duplicates rather than dumping them. This is the main way to turn a stack of Damaged and Intact runes into something worth slotting on your best gear.

Swapping or removing a rune

Rune choices are not permanent. Select a slotted rune and pay 10,000 gold to replace or remove it. This does not destroy the rune you pull out, and it does not consume another Anonymous Artisan’s Crafting Tool, so you can freely rearrange runes as your build changes. The only cost is gold, which makes experimenting cheap once you have a slot open.

With five clear stat options, a rarity ladder you can climb through synthesis, and slots you can rewire for gold, the rune system rewards holding onto duplicates and steadily upgrading your 4-star and higher gear as you clear more Raids.
