Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Breaks the Race Lock on Character Creator Heads

A Nexus Mods release lets elves, dwarves, gnomes, and more share face presets that the base game keeps separated.

Baldur’s Gate 3 builds every character face from a fixed set of presets, and each race gets its own pool. There are no sliders, so a half-elf can only pick from half-elf faces, and a human can only pick from human ones. That leaves eight faces per race and a strong chance of running into another Tav wearing the same one. A mod from Nexus Mods user Bububull removes that wall, letting several races draw from the same collection of heads.

Quick answer: Install the Heads unlocked mod, and elves, drow, half-elves, gnomes, halflings, and dwarves can all use the same face presets on body type one, with the heads adjusted to fit their different proportions.

What the mod changes

The base character creator locks face presets to a single race, so you can never put a gnome’s head on an elf. Heads unlocked strips out that restriction and reworks the faces so they sit correctly on more than one body. That matters because tieflings, dwarves, halflings, and others each have their own build, not just the four body types you switch between during creation.

The mod first launched in May 2024 and has grown since. A later update added custom skeletons to the faces, which cuts down on animation errors when a head is used on a body it was not originally built for.

Which races can share heads

Head sharing currently covers the following races. If your character belongs to one of these, you can pick from the combined pool rather than a single race’s eight faces.

Body type support and current limits

The mod is still a work in progress, and that shapes what runs cleanly right now. Body type one is the reliable choice, so heads should sit and animate correctly there. Support for body type two is planned but not finished, so results on it may be inconsistent until a later update.

Because the collection is still being expanded, not every possible face-and-race pairing is available yet. The practical move is to open character creation and cycle through the heads to see which combination you want has already been added. You can also run it alongside custom modded faces to widen your options further.

How to confirm it is working

Once the mod is loaded, open the character creator and select one of the supported races on body type one. You will know it took effect when the face list shows heads that normally belong to other races, such as a gnome head appearing for an elf. If the roster still matches the vanilla eight faces, the mod is not active in your load order.

If a head looks like it is floating or animating oddly, it is usually a sign you are using a body type or race pairing that is not fully patched yet. Sticking to body type one and the listed races avoids most of those issues while the mod continues to receive updates.
