Chapter 9 sends Emma into the Inukami River Zone in the Wasteland Region, where a Nushi called the Crimson Malefact is the next target. The chapter is short but front-loaded with small tasks. You thank the locals, collect intel from four residents, track down a Scout Golem for the lair location, then fight your way north to a single boss.
Quick answer: Speak to Overseer Gigi, talk to all four Inukami River Residents to complete the “gather information” objective (4/4), ask the Scout Golem to mark the lair, travel north via the cable cars, then defeat the Level 45 Crimson Malefact using a Water-element sword such as Spring Storm.

Gather information from all four residents (4/4)
Once you leave Gigi, four quest markers appear on your map, all clustered around the colony. You need to speak with each Inukami River Resident to advance. Only the last one actually gives you a lead, but you must visit all four to reach 4/4.

Tip: The vegetable patches along the route hand out extra Crop Seedlings, including Biwafruit, Soya Bean, Apple, Tomato, Wheat, and Carrot. Loot them as you pass.
Find the Keeper Golem and the Scout Golem

Route to the lair through the cable cars
The path north is straightforward. There are a couple of items near the Scout Golem worth grabbing, but otherwise you’re heading up.
Step 2 (optional): Just left of the campsite is a large door leading into a small tomb with an Elite Enemy Golem. This fight is optional. Beat it to open a Strongbox full of Cleanse Walker loot and to view a Painting of Lore.

How to beat the Level 45 Crimson Malefact
The Crimson Malefact has only one health bar, and its moveset resembles the Wolf Elite Enemies you’ve faced already, just with heavier hits. Koo isn’t with you for this fight, so you can’t rely on Bloom Arts to restore FP. Focus on filling the stagger bar and keeping up steady damage.
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Level | 45 |
| Weakness | Water — use the Spring Storm sword if you have it |
| Health bars | One |
| Best parry target | Its repeated paw swipe |
| Priority | Build the stagger bar and keep attacking, since Koo isn’t present |

Because the beast’s attacks follow the wolf-type rhythm, you can read its swings and time your parries on that paw swipe. Water damage speeds things up considerably, so equip a Water sword before entering the lair.
How you know the chapter is done
Once the Crimson Malefact falls, Emma is reunited with Koo and returned to the Cleanse Walker. You’re rewarded with Koo’s Memories (Nushi), which confirms the boss is cleared. After resting in the Cleanse Walker until departure, Chapter 9 wraps up and the game moves you toward Chapter 10 and the Starfall Tower.
None of the collectibles here are missable, so if you skipped the optional Elite Golem, the Silverlight sword in the ruined plaza, or the second Keeper Golem near the Approach Campsite, you can fast travel back later to finish cleaning out the zone.
