The Wander blackbox is one of the earliest optional detours in Subnautica 2, but it pays off with an Adaptation that lets you survive in extremely hot zones — a prerequisite for the deep-cavern routes you'll need later. The route involves riding a downward current into a cavern system, destroying glowing Bloom Canker nodules with a Sonic Resonator, and cleansing a corrupted Angel Comb at the end.

What you need before starting
Wander sits in a cavern with hostile flora and tight oxygen windows. Going in undercooked is the most common reason players bounce off the encounter. Make sure the basics are squared away before you leave the Lifepod area.
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sonic Resonator | The only tool that destroys Bloom Cankers. Without it, the encounter cannot be completed. |
| Scanner (charged) | Needed to scan the corrupted Angel Comb and surrounding flora for databank entries. |
| Dash biomod (recommended) | Lets you escape predators in the cavern without spending a Distraction Flare. |
| Oxygen Control biomod (recommended) | Slows oxygen drain while you line up Sonic Resonator shots. |
| Enhanced First-Aid Kit | Wander has the most aggressive fauna of any early signal. Keep one in reserve. |
| Food and water topped up | The cavern detour is long, with no safe refill point inside. |
The Sonic Resonator is the gating item. If you don't have it yet, scan a Sonic Resonator at the Old Habitat to unlock the blueprint, then craft one before approaching Wander.

Finding the Wander signal
The Wander blackbox is flagged by the Noetic Advisor in your Lifepod once it pings in range. In Creative Mode the marker appears almost immediately. In Survival Mode it surfaces after the early NOA updates near the Lifepod, alongside signals like Anita and Chap.
Approach the marker from the side closest to the Lifepod rather than from deeper water. From that angle, a visible water current pulls you downward into the cavern entrance. Riding the current is faster than fighting it and conserves oxygen for the fights inside.

Clearing the Bloom Cankers
Inside the cavern, you'll see a large organic tendril studded with glowing blue nodules. Those are Bloom Cankers. They're inert until hit, and only a Sonic Resonator blast destroys them. Melee tools, mining hits, and standard weapons do nothing.
Step 1: Equip the Sonic Resonator and fire one charged blast at each Bloom Canker on the first tendril. Work along the length of the organism rather than jumping around, so you don't lose track of which nodules are still glowing.
Step 2: Once the first tendril is clear, follow it out of the cavern. It winds through a passage and opens into a larger chamber where a corrupted Angel Comb is visible. Do not interact with the Angel Comb yet — it will not respond while corruption is active.
Step 3: Locate the second tendril branching off the open area and follow it into the next section. Destroy every remaining Bloom Canker on that tendril with the Sonic Resonator. Missing even one will leave the Angel Comb locked.

Cleansing the Angel Comb
With both tendrils stripped of their nodules, return to the corrupted Angel Comb in the open chamber. Interact with it the same way you would the healthy Angel Comb that grants the alien-food Adaptation. The corruption visibly clears, and the Adaptation unlocks immediately.
The reward is heat resistance — your character can survive in extremely high-temperature zones that would otherwise burn you out. This is the Adaptation gating progress into the hotter cave systems south and southeast of the Lifepod, including the route to the Tadpole Pens keycode.

What to do next
The heat Adaptation pairs naturally with the Tadpole Pens objective the Noetic Advisor unlocks shortly after Wander. The keycode for the Tadpole Pens door sits at the bottom of a hot cavern reachable only after the heat resistance is active, and Zip's blackbox there grants the kurul level access key needed to open the sealed corridor.
If you haven't already, swing back to the Old Habitat and the Welcome Center to scan anything you skipped — Sonic Resonator runs are far easier once you've picked up the Scanner Station, Battery Terminal, and Wakemaker Fragment blueprints scattered through those bases.
