Half of the Vampirism tree in The Blood of Dawnwalker cannot be bought with skill points at all. Nodes like Blood Surge, Shadowstorm, and Scarlet Shield sit greyed out with a blood requirement attached, and no amount of feeding on villagers will open them. The only key is another vrakhir’s blood, taken either from a phial you loot during a quest or drained directly from a boyar you kill.
Quick answer: Open your inventory and drink the phial tied to the ability you want — Phial of Xanthe’s Blood for Blood Surge, Phial of Ambrus’ Blood for Scarlet Shield, Phial of Bakir’s Blood for Shadowstorm. Each one raises your Corruption and unlocks that node, after which you still spend a skill point at a road shrine to learn level 1.
Which Vampirism abilities need Vrakhir blood
Five nodes in the tree carry the blood requirement. Voracious Hunger, Death from Above, Crimson Rush, Rend, and Shapeshift are available from the start and only need Corruption plus points. The blood is not interchangeable — each vrakhir passes on one specific power, so Bakir’s blood will never give you Blood Surge.
| Ability | Blood required | Main sources |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Surge | Xanthe | Treasury casket near Svartrau Cathedral; defeating Xanthe in The Cycle of Love |
| Scarlet Shield | Ambrus | Xanthe’s Recruiters: Just a Bit More; defeating Ambrus in The Gilded Gauntlet |
| Shadowstorm | Bakir | Leech Collector quests and The Bloodletter; Xanthe’s Recruiters: Come Home; defeating Bakir in The Lunar Game |
| Piercing Shriek | Brencis | Xanthe’s Recruiters: Taste of Power; granted at the end of Our Rotten Roots |
| Mesmerise | Lacra | The Night of Horrors |
Note: The boyars are the fallback route. Anger them through court quests, defeat each one, and you get the chance to feed on the corpse for the same result. If you skip that, all of them turn up again in the endgame quest, which is far too late to build around.

Add to Google Preferences →How drinking a phial works
The phials are legendary consumables and sit in the same inventory tab as your food and potions. Drinking one does two things at once: it fires a “Corruption Rises” prompt and it removes the blood lock from that node in the Vampirism tree. Drinking all of them along the way is also what pops the “Absolutely Insatiable” trophy.

Unlocking the node is not the same as learning the ability. Level 1 still costs a skill point spent at a built road shrine, and every level after that adds a time cost and a Corruption threshold. You raise Corruption by using vampiric powers or feeding, with humans giving far more than animals.
Phial of Xanthe’s Blood: Unlock Blood Surge
Blood Surge detonates a target and deals flat damage to bosses instead. The only known phial for it is locked inside the treasury building beside Svartrau Cathedral, which you can reach during A Monk and a Saint. You need the Treasury Key first.

| Level | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 178 area damage in 3m; 623 to bosses | 1 skill point, Vrakhir blood |
| 2 | 222 area damage in 4m; 756 to bosses | 1 point, 1 hour, 10 Corruption |
| 3 | 267 area damage in 5m; 890 to bosses | 2 points, 1 hour, 12 Corruption |
| 4 | 311 area damage in 6m; 1023 to bosses | 3 points, 2 hours, 14 Corruption |
If you would rather skip the cathedral entirely, killing Xanthe during The Cycle of Love and draining her gives you the same ability.
Phial of Ambrus’ Blood: Unlock Scarlet Shield
Scarlet Shield is passive once slotted into the Active Abilities panel and only works at night. It heals you off blocks, which makes it the most defensive pick of the three.
The phial turns up as quest loot during Xanthe’s Recruiters: Just a Bit More, and it can also be pulled off a corpse during Lost Blood. The alternative is confronting Ambrus himself in The Gilded Gauntlet and draining him after the fight. That quest only becomes available once Coen has disrupted enough of Ambrus’s business to max out his anger, so it is not something you can walk into early.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | Restores 20% of a Health Segment after a Perfect Block; 20% chance after Directional Block, 10% after Omniblock |
| 2 | 25% after Perfect Block; 20% after Directional Block, 15% after Omniblock |
| 3 | Omniblock chance rises to 20%; attacks after a Perfect Block heal for 10% of damage dealt |
| 4 | 30% after Perfect Block; 30% Directional, 25% Omniblock; 25% chance for any block to count as Perfect |
Phial of Bakir’s Blood: Unlock Shadowstorm
Shadowstorm slows time around you while you keep moving at normal speed. It is night-only, costs 1 Activation Charge and 15% of your health, and runs on a 90-second cooldown. It is also usually the first of the locked abilities you can realistically reach.
The most reliable route is the Leech Collector chain. Finish all three Leech Collector quests and destroy the blood barrels at a minimum of one camp — without that, The Bloodletter never spawns. Kill the boss and Bakir’s blood is yours. Xanthe’s Recruiters: Come Home rewards the same phial through a quieter path.
There is a swamp variant too. During Ambrus’s Collectors: Unsavory Solutions in the Southern Swampside, clearing out the camp guards and looting the body afterwards yields the phial directly.

The quest wraps up with a Quest Ended summary listing Blood Leeches among the rewards, at which point the phial is already sitting in your inventory.

| Level | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 second duration | 1 skill point, Vrakhir blood |
| 2 | 5 second duration | 1 point, 1 hour, 8 Corruption |
| 3 | 6 seconds, +20% attack damage | 2 points, 1 hour, 11 Corruption |
| 4 | 7 seconds, +25% attack damage, +1s per kill | 3 points, 2 hours, 14 Corruption |
Bakir dies during The Lunar Game if you go that way instead, and draining him grants Shadowstorm the same as the phial does.
How to confirm the ability unlocked
Drinking a phial throws up a “Corruption Rises” banner with a “New Vampiric Powers Available” line and a SHOW prompt that jumps straight to the tree. Take it, and the node you just paid for should no longer be greyed out.

If you dismiss the prompt, open the skill menu manually and switch to the Vampirism tab. The blood requirement text under the ability disappears once the right phial has been consumed, leaving only the skill point and Corruption costs.
Why the ability still shows as locked
- You drank the wrong blood. Each vrakhir grants exactly one power and there is no substitution.
- You have not been to a road shrine. Levels are only purchased there, not from the tree screen alone.
- Your Corruption is below the threshold shown by the fang icon on that level.
- The Bloodletter never appeared because you finished the Leech Collector quests without destroying the barrels at any camp.
- You do not have the Treasury Key, so the treasury building near Svartrau Cathedral stays shut.
- A boyar quest has not triggered yet because their anger has not been pushed high enough through court quests.
Scarlet Shield and Shadowstorm both carry the NIGHT ONLY tag, so neither will fire during daylight hours no matter how many points you sink into them. Plan the phials you chase around how you actually fight, because the blood you drink early shapes the build you carry for most of the run.
