Infinity Ward said Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 would push its long-running storylines to a breaking point, and it means it. The fourth and final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series kills off a villain the series spent years building up, wipes out most of North Korea’s leadership, and ends with Captain John Price bleeding out on a frozen lake. Campaign Early Access opened on October 16 for digital pre-orders, and the full game launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Everything below spoils the story through the post-credits scene.
Quick answer: Captain Price dies at the end of the campaign after killing Archer on a frozen lake. Makarov, Milena, Ri Ju-young, Supreme Leader Ri Seung-ho, and Private Ju Kwon also die along the way.
Modern Warfare 4 character deaths, in story order
| Character | Killed by | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Private Ju Kwon | Rocket explosion | Seoul street |
| Milena | Price, pistol shot | Office |
| Vladimir Makarov | Price, bare fists | Snowy alley |
| Defector | Ri Ju-young’s troops, hanged | North Korean village |
| Senior council | Ri Ju-young, Sgt. Ko, guards | Pyongyang |
| Ri Seung-ho | Ri Ju-young | Presidential office |
| Ri Ju-young | Park and Kai | Palace |
| Archer | Price, Archer’s own knife | Frozen lake |

Phillip Graves and Valeria Garza are left off the list on purpose. Both end up on the wrong end of a gun, but neither scene plays out as a confirmed death, which is covered further down.

The first death comes before the invasion has properly started. Private Park’s squad, Sierra-1, is on patrol in Seoul alongside US Marine Cpl. Dunn, with Pvt. Cho, Sgt. Jae, and Private Ju Kwon in the group. They step out of a convenience store, the power cuts out across the street, and a rocket slams into the road without warning.

Dunn and Cho reach Ju Kwon in the aftermath and try to help, but his wounds are fatal. Dunn takes his dog tags. It is a small, quiet scene, and it sets up how personal the Korean half of the campaign is meant to feel for Park and his unit.

Price’s revenge: Milena and Makarov
Price spends the campaign as an outlaw, hunted by his own former team after killing General Shepherd. His trail runs through Milena first. He corners her in an office and demands Makarov’s location. She insists she only tracks money and refuses to give him anything, so Price shoots her in the head with a pistol.

That leads to Makarov himself. Price fights through Konni guards, chases him across rooftops, and drops into an alley during a snowstorm. There is no gunfight at the end. The two brawl in the snow until Price pins him and keeps punching until Makarov is dead, which closes out the reboot’s central villain with Price’s bare hands.

Price gets no time to savor it. While he stands over the body, masked, armed operators surround him and take him captive.
Ri Ju-young’s coup and the deaths in North Korea
Commander Ri Ju-young, a KPA officer and daughter of the late Supreme Leader, drives most of the killing on the North Korean side. The game’s darkest early scene is in a village where her troops gather the residents and force a defector onto a stool beneath a pine tree. During the sequence the player gets a prompt reading [X] TO REFUSE | HOLD [L2] AND [R2] TO EXECUTE. The defector is hanged, and Ri then orders the village burned and its residents killed.

A flashback labeled “1 DAY BEFORE INVASION” shows how the war actually starts. Ri meets her brother, Supreme Leader Ri Seung-ho, in Pyongyang, and he argues against more violence. She responds by summoning the senior council, accusing them of compromise, and opening fire. Sergeant Ko and the guards gun down every official in the room.
Seung-ho is next. In the presidential office, with Archer present, Ri shoots her own brother dead and commits to a full invasion of the peninsula. That makes the Korean War of Modern Warfare 4 the product of a coup, with outside help from the campaign’s eventual final villain.
Late in the campaign, Ri dies in the palace: a tactical squad forces its way into the room where she holds her ground, and Kai and Park kill her with gunfire.

Graves and Valeria: shot at, not confirmed dead
Shadow Company commander Phillip Graves gets a tense standoff at an industrial rail depot. Price catches him, Graves lies wounded and tries to bargain, and Price levels a pistol at his forehead. Pulling the trigger fails the mission. The game cuts to a TRY AGAIN screen, so executing Graves is not the scene the story wants you to take.
Valeria’s moment comes on a skyscraper helipad at sunset. She delivers a captured Task Force 141, with Price, Gaz, and Ghost in tow, to Archer as part of a deal. Archer turns on her immediately, opens fire on Valeria, and takes 141 for himself. She is shot, but the scene stops short of confirming her death.
How Captain Price dies in Modern Warfare 4
The finale is a one-on-one. Price chases Archer through a snowstorm, part of it a hallucination, and out onto a frozen lake. The fight goes to knives. Price overpowers Archer on the ice and drives Archer’s own blade into his neck.
Price is already carrying too many wounds to survive it. He lies on the ice next to Archer’s body as Ghost arrives, the same Ghost who spent the campaign hunting him. Price’s last words are short.
“Gaz was right… Hold the line.”
Ghost closes Price’s eyes. The screen cuts to black with the Hold the Line trophy, followed by In Memoriam cards for Reiner Yang, Matt Canale, Preetam Raj Bordoloi, and Vince Zampella, then the Infinity Ward credits.
Post-credits scene: Laswell deletes Task Force 141
After the credits, Kate Laswell sits at a secured terminal and works through three personnel files. Each one gets the same PERMANENTLY DELETE THIS RECORD? prompt, and she confirms each.
- Garrick, K. (Gaz)
- Riley, S. (Ghost)
- Price, J. (Bravo 0-6)
Only Price dies on screen, but Gaz and Ghost are erased from the record alongside him. Laswell then meets an operative, says operations are moving to the DMZ, and names her the new head of the Watcher Program. That hands the story straight to DMZ, the game’s extraction mode, which is set after the campaign in Hajin, an exclusion zone on the Korean Peninsula where operators recover abandoned weapons and technology left behind by the war.
