The second run of missions in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 pushes the campaign out of its opening war zone and into a chain of events set in the days leading up to an invasion. Four distinct chapters play out, each in a different city and each handing you a different character, from a South Korean marine holding a collapsing front line to Captain Price running a transport job through Paris alongside cartel leader Valeria Garza.
Quick answer: This part covers four missions — Losing Ground (South Korea), Traffic (Paris), Gone Dark (Mumbai), and Assassins (North Korea) — all tied together by a cylindrical EMP device that Task Force 141 and the SAS are chasing.
| Mission | Setting | Timeline | You play as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Losing Ground | War-torn city, South Korea | Present Day | Pvt. Park Hyun-jun |
| Traffic | Paris | 3 Days Before Invasion | Captain Price |
| Gone Dark | Mumbai | 2 Days Before Invasion | Price, then Gaz |
| Assassins | Pyongyang, North Korea | 1 Day Before Invasion | Leader Seung-ho |
Losing Ground: holding the line in South Korea
Losing Ground puts you behind Private Park Hyun-jun of the ROK, advancing down a devastated city street under heavy fire alongside allied forces. The first objective sends the squad through wrecked cars and street debris to reach a cafe, which then becomes a defensive position where you resupply ammunition and fire on hostiles moving through the streets below.

After the cafe is swarming with enemies, you fight your way back toward an extraction bridge. Use the mortar fixed to a transport vehicle to strike perimeter threats: enemy foot soldiers, snipers on rooftops, and BMPs advancing in armored vehicles. The sequence closes with a dash across the failing bridge, through a burning bus, to the allied transport trucks. In a later briefing-room scene, Col. Shaw explains that communications suddenly went dark as coordinated assaults began across the peninsula.

Add to Google Preferences →Traffic: Price and Valeria’s Paris transport run
The story rewinds three days to Paris, where Captain Price partners with Valeria Garza to transport a package across the city. Traffic begins with a chase at speed through central streets; from the passenger window, you shoot at vehicles attacking you.
After a crash in a tunnel, the action shifts to clearing hostiles on foot before you commandeer an armored vehicle and drive it through the highway tunnel, pushing past roadblocks and back into city traffic.

The pursuit cuts through an urban park as you smash through gates after a yellow delivery van, with enemy motorbikes gaining on you. After the armored vehicle overturns, Price and Valeria escape into an alleyway, then continue the fight on foot through Paris streets, past corners and storefronts.

You make for an extraction point via courtyards, residential corridors, and backstreets as police and cartel forces fire on you. Once aboard the yellow van, use an assault rifle and C4 from its rear doors to fend off the police and armored vehicles chasing you along the highway.

Decoy vans deploy at an underpass to split up the chasing authorities, and the mission closes at an airfield where Price speaks with Laswell by phone before handing over the container package. That package holds a specialized cylindrical technological weapon, and it is the thread that carries straight into the next mission.

Gone Dark: the Mumbai EMP and the Ghost vs. Price duel
Two days before the invasion, Price and Valeria move through Mumbai toward a high-rise meeting point. Gone Dark starts with the pair navigating alleys and residential hallways while helicopters and special forces hunt them. Valeria activates the cylindrical device, and the result is a citywide electrical blackout that downs a helicopter mid-flight.

Command then passes to the SAS. Gaz and Ghost reach the high-rise roof by air, using thermal optics and silenced rifles to secure the weapon before breaching the penthouse and clearing each floor in turn. The pair split up to look for Price in the upper suites, leading to a gunpoint standoff on an outdoor glass walkway, where Ghost confronts him.
Ghost and Price then face each other in a knife duel on the skyscraper’s glass canopy. Gaz breaks in, setting off an attack by Valeria’s cartel soldiers. At the helipad, Archer arrives in a helicopter, examines the recovered device, and takes custody of Price and the prisoners.
Assassins: the Pyongyang coup and the estate escape
The story shifts to Pyongyang, one day ahead of the invasion. In a narrative scene, Supreme Leader Seung-ho and Ri discuss defectors and governance; afterward, Ri and his soldiers kill the Senior Council in the estate’s grand boardroom. Assassins then hands control to Leader Seung-ho as he escapes through the building with guidance from his bodyguard, Ko Jin-Hyuk.
The escape is a stealth sequence. You shimmy along exterior ledges in the dark, reach a surveillance room to reset keypad codes and gather weapons, and clear patrol routes with suppressed weapons and blades. The path winds through a multi-level library, a service stairwell down to the kitchen, an outdoor exit, and a garden hedge maze where ponds offer underwater cover. The route finally reaches a hidden bunker door at the base of a statue.
Several keypad doors gate the estate, and the codes used during the escape are:
| Door | Code |
|---|---|
| Service corridor | 5-5-2-3 |
| Kitchen exit | 7-6-3-2 |
| Bunker entrance | 9-1-0-3 |
The escape ends in a betrayal. Inside the bunker office, Seung-ho is ambushed by Ko Jin-Hyuk, Ri Ju-Young, and Archer, revealing that the bodyguard had been working with the plotters the whole time. Archer opens a briefcase containing the same cylindrical device from the earlier missions, sealing an alliance before leaving.
How the four missions connect
Despite the swings in location and playable character, one object holds these chapters together. The cylindrical EMP device is the goal of the Paris transport, the trigger behind the Mumbai blackout, and the item Archer ends up carrying in both Mumbai and Pyongyang. The present-day South Korea fighting in Losing Ground frames the invasion that the Paris, Mumbai, and North Korea chapters are counting down toward, which is why each of those three carries a “days before invasion” title card.
Archer’s appearances at the Mumbai helipad and the Pyongyang bunker, along with Ko Jin-Hyuk’s double-cross, point to a conspiracy that ties the device, the coup in North Korea, and the attack on South Korea into a single plan running underneath all four missions.
