Infinity Ward is steering Modern Warfare 4 back toward grounded, military-styled combat, dropping the acrobatic Omni-Movement from the Black Ops games in favor of fluid traversal and what the studio calls its most authentic gunplay yet. The game launches on October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with a campaign set against a North Korean invasion of South Korea alongside Captain Price's off-book hunt for a world-shifting weapon.
Movement system overhaul (mantling, climbing, backward slide)

Movement is built around fluidity and control rather than speed tricks. Traversal, combat movement, and gunplay transitions are designed to flow into one another so you keep momentum without losing control under pressure.
Mantling lets you grab onto surfaces and climb buildings, ledges, and even pipes. You can also drop down to hang from edges and shimmy across them, opening up vertical routes and new flanking angles across larger, more dynamic maps. A new backward slide is added for repositioning during a fight, and you can still slide cancel as before, now with a mantle cancel option on top of it. Sprinting, climbing, mantling, and sliding have all been improved to support both methodical and aggressive playstyles.
Ballistic Authority and refined gunplay (zero bloom, recoil, weapon behavior)

Ballistic Authority is a weapon-first technology stack that lines up bullet trajectory, weapon motion, operator stance, camera, audio, field of view, and target visibility into a single combat fidelity system. The stated goal is no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt about where your shots land.
Here is what actually changes when you fire:
| Change | What it does |
|---|---|
| Zero bloom | Bullets land where the weapon is pointed, making hipfire direct and predictable. |
| Recoil rebuild | Recoil, convergence, and handling now reflect player input more directly, so control is on you. |
| Weapon behavior | Guns respond to movement, stance changes, and the environment, shifting position in tight spaces without slowing you down. |
| Visual tuning | Depth of field and visual effects are refined to improve enemy visibility without removing the grounded look. |
Theater Mode returns
Theater Mode comes back to a Modern Warfare game for the first time since the original Modern Warfare 3. You can replay recorded matches from any angle using a flycam, switch between first-person and third-person, capture screenshots, and save gameplay clips. It is built for content creators pulling footage and for players studying their own matches to improve.
Redesigned Create-a-Class and Gunsmith (Apex Attachments, Gunny)

Create-a-Class has been rebuilt from scratch. Operators, weapons, equipment, and killstreaks now sit in a single loadout, so you can adjust each part without jumping between tabs. Gunsmith returns with deeper customization, and attachments are now shared across a weapon class to make building and experimenting faster.
Two new systems sit on top of that. Apex Attachments are endgame unlocks earned by fully leveling a weapon, and each one can meaningfully change how that gun behaves. The studio describes adding rapid-fire to a revolver or turning a pistol into a shotgun, altering firing mode, handling, tactical utility, or stealth. Infinity Ward framed the intent plainly: "We give you a new way to play with a weapon that you already know and love. And the idea is not to make it more OP, necessarily, but to have a new toy to play with."
Gunny is a new build recommender that assembles practical close-, mid-, or long-range loadouts based on your playstyle and the attachments you have unlocked, leaving room for further tweaking. Builds can also be shared with other players.

Progression also splits into two Prestige paths. Classic Prestige relocks Create-a-Class progression in exchange for higher XP rates and exclusive rewards, while Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 without resetting your unlocked loadouts, with its own rewards and milestones.
Kill Block, the dynamic multiplayer map
Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 core 6v6 maps set in distinct locations worldwide, plus larger maps built for combined vehicle and infantry combat. The standout new addition is Kill Block, set inside the Westbridge Training Facility.
Kill Block reconfigures its layout between rounds, reshaping sightlines, routes, and cover so you have to re-read the space each time. It is built from modular sections that can produce more than 500 distinct configurations, and it supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats at launch, with more sections, configurations, and core modes planned during live seasons.
No "clowny" skins and the cosmetics direction

Infinity Ward is committing to military-grounded cosmetics. The official Call of Duty account stated, "We got the feedback. No BS. This is all about staying true to Modern Warfare. No clowny skins for launch and seasons beyond." That follows a similar move away from goofy operator skins in Black Ops 7, so the cosmetics here lean on realistic military outfits rather than crossover or cartoon designs.

Graphics, platforms, and PC features
Modern Warfare 4 is built natively for current-generation hardware, which means it skips PlayStation 4 and Xbox One entirely. The trade-off is larger combat spaces, denser worlds, clearer engagements, and steadier performance across modes, backed by upgraded VFX, lighting, materials, and character rendering.
The PC version gets dedicated performance optimization with upscaling and frame generation, launching with DLSS 4.5 support and ray tracing. Because DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction arrives in August, the game is set up to support it. One note for PC players: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required.
| Platform | Notes |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 / 5 Pro | Native current-gen build. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Play Anywhere title. |
| PC (Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Steam) | DLSS 4.5, ray tracing; TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot required. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Native version by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends; pre-order details coming later in the summer. |
Quality-of-life fixes
Infinity Ward is also addressing long-standing annoyances. The forced restart prompt that appeared in the Call of Duty launcher after every update is being removed, so updates should be less disruptive between sessions.
DMZ extraction mode
DMZ returns as the game's extraction mode. You deploy solo or as a squad into a shifting conflict zone as an off-the-books asset, tasked with recovering advanced military tech left behind after the war. Conditions change with weather, dynamic objectives, and roaming hostile forces, and each run forces choices about what to grab, who to fight or negotiate with, and when to extract.
Editions, pre-orders, and release

Pre-orders are live, with Standard and Vault editions available. Pre-ordering grants Open Beta early access and the Hunter Killer operator skin, while the Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. Players who own and have played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or later on the same platform account qualify for a 10% loyalty discount on the Vault Edition, valid through the October 23, 2026 launch.
With a hard pivot away from futuristic movement and crossover cosmetics, Modern Warfare 4 reads as a deliberate return to the grounded identity that defined the sub-series, and the Open Beta will be the first chance to test how the new movement and Ballistic Authority systems feel in practice.
