Living Shards are the material that unlocks new Aberrant forms in Control Resonant, so they decide how much combat variety Dylan Faden gets across a playthrough. Because they gate weapon upgrades and Combo Finishers, players quickly start looking for a way to grind them. That option does not exist.
Quick answer: You cannot farm Living Shards. There is a finite supply per playthrough, earned from main and side quests, Faults, Resonant boss rewards, and vendors selling them for 4,000 Source each.
What Living Shards do in Control Resonant
To expand Dylan’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant, collect Living Shards. The game identifies this resource as exceptionally scarce and necessary for unlocking additional Aberrant forms. Using a shard adds new attacks and lets you try other playstyles.

Unlocking a new attack for the Aberrant costs up to three Living Shards, and the final upgrade in a skill tree can take another one or two. That means you spend them almost as fast as you collect them, especially if you want to run more than one form.

Living Shards are progression rewards, not drops from repeatable enemies. Regular enemies in Control Resonant do not respawn outside of Resonant Cycles, and the shards themselves are placed at fixed points, tied to quests, bosses, and vendor inventories. Because there is a set number in the game, grinding does not add more to the pool.
The supply is still enough to unlock and upgrade what you want, so the constraint is about choosing where to spend rather than running out entirely. If you want a larger stash, a New Game+ run hands out a fresh batch from its story missions and Faults.
Every way to get Living Shards
Living Shards come from four reliable sources as you work through Manhattan. Cover all of them and you will build a steady supply.
- Completing main story quests.
- Completing optional side missions.
- Clearing Faults, the traversal challenges Dylan tackles while searching for his sister Jesse.
- Defeating Resonant bosses for milestone rewards.
- Buying them from Zone vendors for 4,000 Source each.
Vendor purchases and Zone ranks
Each Zone has a vendor whose stock includes materials, cosmetics, crafting components, and usually a Living Shard or two. A shard costs 4,000 Source, the game’s main currency. Vendors carry limited quantities, but raising a Zone’s rank unlocks more stock, so exploring and progressing a region opens extra shards to buy.
To keep Source flowing without relying on Resonant Cycles, use the Hold the Line and Firebreak World Events. Heavy enemies in these events drop Source and materials, and failing an event restores those enemies so you can repeat it.
Known Living Shard locations
There are 13 confirmed Living Shards across Manhattan, split between fixed pickups, quest rewards, boss drops, and purchasable vendor stock.
| Source | How to get it |
|---|---|
| Desk pickup | Grabbed with the Level 1 clearance keycard |
| Central vendor | Sold for 4,000 Source |
| Western Incursion Zone vendor | One at Vendor Level I and one at Vendor Level II |
| Downtown vendor | One base, a second at Vendor Level III |
| Ice Cream Truck | Two available for 4,000 Source each |
| The Park vendor | Sold at Vendor Level 1 and 2 for 4,000 each |
| Additional vendor | Two for 4,000 each, second unlocks at Rank 2 |
| Power Lines | Main quest reward |
| Into the Sinkhole | Main quest reward |
| Recursions and Iterations | Quest reward |
| The Underpass Fault | Fault completion reward |
| The Hedron | Boss defeat reward |
| Hedron Proxy | Boss defeat reward |
Vendor totals scale with Zone and Vendor Level, so revisiting a region after ranking it up can put another shard on the shelf.

How to confirm you have a Living Shard
After a quest reward, boss kill, or purchase, the shard appears under Aberrant Items in your Inventory. Once it is there, open a Primary or Secondary Forms skill tree and you will see it spent against the listed cost, such as the 2 Living Shards needed for the Extend upgrade. If the shards deduct and the new attack or form unlocks, the purchase went through.
Because the pool is finite, plan your spending around the forms you actually want to main. Grab every quest, Fault, and boss reward, then top up from vendors as your Source allows, and you will have enough to build the Dylan you want without needing a grind that does not exist.
