The Resonant Cycle is the system that keeps Manhattan from ever staying cleared in Control Resonant. Kill a Resonant, and the game pauses to tell you that the victory has a cost: the city resets into a harder version of itself, and it does so everywhere at once, not just in the zone where the boss was hiding.
Quick answer: A Resonant Cycle is a permanent world-state change triggered by every Resonant kill. Enemies respawn tougher with new types, World Feats refresh in each Zone, and resource drops improve.
How a Resonant Cycle starts
The Cycle is not something you opt into from a menu. It fires the moment a Resonant goes down, and the game marks the transition with a dimension-shift cutscene. “The Central Resonant” quest shows the sequence cleanly, since the kill and the shift happen back to back in the factory tunnels.

Once the cutscene ends, “Quest Completed” appears, followed by two tutorial cards that spell out the new Cycle and the changes it brings. Dylan then radios Zoe to report that the person hiding in the tunnels under the factory had turned into a Resonant Entity.

The Central Resonant pays out 3,000 Source, 500 Central XP, an Untapped Lighter, and one Reset Item.
If you skip past the tutorial cards, both can be reread later from the Tutorials tab in the Archives.

Every effect lands immediately and applies to the whole map, including zones nowhere near the boss arena. Half of the package is a difficulty increase; the other half is an economy increase meant to match it.
| Change | Effect |
|---|---|
| Enemy encounters | Most respawn, tougher than before |
| Enemy roster | New enemy types join old fights |
| World Feats | Refresh in every Zone |
| Resource drops | Better quality and quantity |
| Some activities | Increased rewards |
| Dylan | New paranatural ability at The Gap |
Cycles compound. A second Resonant kill does not repeat the first reset, it layers on top of it, so a starter area revisited several Cycles later can be far deadlier than it was the first time through. Treat any trip back to an old zone as a real fight rather than a cleanup run.
An enemy’s Power Level appears before its health bar. If respawned enemies greatly outlevel Dylan, defeating them becomes a slog; leaving to increase your Power Level at The Gap and returning later is generally quicker.
Can you avoid a Resonant Cycle?
Not on the critical path. Several Resonant kills are required to move the story forward, so those Cycles are mandatory. Other Resonant fights are optional, and leaving one alive keeps that particular Cycle from ever starting.
The catch is that each Resonant is also an ability unlock. Skip one and Dylan loses the paranatural power that fight would have granted, while every Cycle you already triggered stays in force. You end up with the harder Manhattan and fewer tools to handle it.
How to undo a Resonant Cycle with an autosave
Autosaves use several slots, allowing a rollback if you started a Cycle too soon. Go to Settings, select Load Game, then choose an autosave made before the Resonant battle. Manhattan reverts to its state from the preceding Cycle.
Everything earned after that save is gone too, including the paranatural ability from the Resonant you just killed.
Resonant Cycles, World Feats, and Zone XP
The most useful side of the system is the World Feat refresh. World Feats are optional objectives scattered through every zone, and completing them pays Zone XP along with resources such as Source and Aberrant Splinters. Because a new Cycle resets them everywhere, each Resonant kill hands you another full pass of Zone XP.
They show up on the Map, and their objectives appear on screen once Dylan gets close. Apex Hunt in Central is one example, paying out 1 Aberrant Splinter, 417 Source, and an Archives entry for its Hiss Freighter Apex target. Suspended Extermination feeds the same Zone XP bar.
As a region gains levels, its Zone XP costs rise. Reaching Level 2 in Central takes 600 Zone XP, and Level 4 takes 800; The Park requires 1,000 for Level 5. Every level grants that zone a permanent bonus.
| Zone Level | Unlock |
|---|---|
| 2 | Enemy Drop Boost |
| 3 | Health Elements Boost |
| 4 | Arcade Machine (SHÜM machine) |
| 5 | Large Resource Crate Marker |
| 6 | Vendor Level 2 |
| 7 | World Feat Cap Increase |
| 8 | Source Boost |
| 9 | Health Elements Boost |
Level 7 is the level directly connected to the Cycle. Raising the World Feat cap increases the number of Feats in that zone, and because every Cycle refreshes them, each Resonant kill provides more Zone XP than the previous one. Vendor stock tops out at 35 entries spanning Materials, Aberrant Items, Artifacts, Special Items, and Customization, letting the stronger rewards from a new Cycle go directly toward upgrades.
Approach each Resonant battle as a deliberate point of no return. Complete the upgrades, health pickups, and Zone activities you want under the current rules; then secure the kill, collect the new ability from The Gap, and use the Map to identify the World Feats that have returned.
