Crimson Desert's Arboria Castle Strongbox Puzzle — The Correct Wheel Solution

Crimson Desert's Arboria Castle Strongbox Puzzle — The Correct Wheel Solution

The Arboria Castle strongbox in Crimson Desert is one of the more frustrating hexagonal puzzles in the game. Five pressure wheels control five pins, and you need to align each pin with a faint reference line etched near the bottom of the mechanism. The camera angle makes it nearly impossible to eyeball, and the visual feedback is unreliable — even when the solution is correct, the pins may not look perfectly aligned. Here's how to get it done without guessing.

Quick answer: Scroll all five wheels to their maximum raised position first. Then scroll each wheel down in this order — Wheel 1: 3 times, Wheel 2: 4 times, Wheel 3: 5 times, Wheel 4: 4 times, Wheel 5: 2 times. Finally, press the switch on the far right to check and unlock.

How the strongbox mechanism works

Each of the five wheels is a pressure dial shaped like a hexagon. Scrolling the wheel rotates it by one hexagonal face, which raises or lowers the corresponding pin. The goal is to bring every pin down to a specific height that matches a thin black reference line near the base of the cylinders. You cannot see the pins move in real time while turning the wheels — they only update when you activate the check switch on the far right side of the strongbox.

One "scroll" equals one full thumb movement on the wheel. Quick taps that barely nudge the wheel do not count as a full rotation. You need to press and hold long enough for the character's hand to complete the scrolling motion before releasing.

Resetting the wheels before you start

The most common reason this puzzle fails is that players start scrolling from an inconsistent position. If you've already been turning wheels before looking up the solution, your starting point is unknown, and the numbered sequence won't produce the right result.

Step 1: Scroll every wheel all the way up until you hear each one click and lock into its maximum raised position. At this point, the only direction you can scroll is downward.

Step 2: Confirm that all five wheels are locked at the top. If any wheel still scrolls upward, keep going until it stops.

⚠️
Do not skip the reset. The scroll counts below only work when every wheel starts from the fully raised position. If you've already moved wheels around, reset all of them to the top first.

Strongbox wheel solution (from fully raised)

With all wheels locked at their highest point, scroll each one downward by the number of times listed below. Work from left to right.

Wheel (left to right)Scrolls down
1st Wheel3
2nd Wheel4
3rd Wheel5
4th Wheel4
5th Wheel2

Each scroll must be a deliberate, full thumb movement — watch the hand animation complete before counting it. If you rush through with quick taps, the wheel may not register a full hexagonal rotation, and the pin won't move to the correct position.

Checking and unlocking the strongbox

Step 1: After scrolling all five wheels to the correct positions, navigate to the switch on the far right side of the strongbox interface. This is the check button — the pins will not move, or the box will not open, until you activate it.

Step 2: Flip the switch. If the solution is correct, the pins will align with the reference line, and the strongbox will unlock. You'll see the mechanism open and gain access to the item inside.

Don't try to judge success by looking at the pins visually. Even with the correct solution applied, the middle three pins often appear to sit slightly above the reference line due to the fixed camera angle. Trust the scroll counts and use the switch to verify.

What's inside the strongbox

The strongbox contains a book with a complete instruction manual for the Arboria Castle machinery — the elixir factory mechanism located elsewhere in the castle. This book walks you through every step needed to operate the machine, including the correct liquid color mixing ratios.

📘
Do not sell or discard the book from the strongbox. It serves as the guide for the castle's machinery puzzle. If you lose it, you'll need to wait for a later side quest (tied to a character named Hernand) that provides the same instructions through a different path.

The strongbox puzzle itself is entirely optional. If you skip it, you can still complete the machinery puzzle later when the Hernand side quest becomes available, as that quest provides all the same operational steps for the elixir factory. The strongbox simply lets you access those instructions earlier.

Why different guides show different numbers

There's a reason players report conflicting scroll counts across different walkthroughs. The numbers depend entirely on the starting position of each wheel. The solution above uses the fully raised position as the baseline, scrolling downward. Some guides describe the same solution but frame it as scrolling upward from the fully lowered position — in that case, the counts are identical, but the direction reverses. Others count clicks or audio cues rather than full thumb movements, which can produce different numbers depending on how the game registers partial inputs on different platforms.

If you're on PS5 or using a controller, the visual feedback for wheel movement can be especially subtle. Focus on the hand animation, completing each scroll rather than trying to see the hexagonal face rotate. Audio clicks can also help you count, though the sound is faint.

Bonus pickup near Arboria Castle

While you're in the Arboria Castle area, look for a bag placed next to a broken cart to the southeast of the castle. This bag grants 10 additional inventory slots for free — a significant quality-of-life upgrade that's easy to miss if you're focused on the puzzles inside the castle itself.

The Arboria Castle strongbox is one of Crimson Desert's more opaque puzzles, largely because the visual feedback doesn't match the precision the mechanism demands. Resetting all wheels to the top and following the exact scroll-down sequence is the most reliable method. Once you've grabbed the book inside, you'll be well-equipped to tackle the castle's machinery without waiting for the quest that covers the same ground later in the game.
