Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps update is the biggest change the game has received since it entered development testing. Valve has rebuilt the map, replaced the neutral enemies, added six new heroes to unlock through voting, and introduced a temporary merchant called The Broker who trades your high-tier gear for far stronger Corrupted Items. It also brings a wide set of HUD, shop, ping, and accessibility changes.
Quick answer: City Never Sleeps overhauls the New York City map, swaps in new Haunt neutrals, adds four Districts with new objectives, brings six vote-unlocked heroes, and adds The Broker for Corrupted Items available for only a few days.

Six new heroes and how the voting works
The update adds six heroes, but not all of them go live at once. Players vote on the release order from the new Pregame lobby, and the winning team’s votes count double. The first hero arrives on October 2nd, with the rest following on a two-week cadence based on votes.
| Hero | Traits |
|---|---|
| Nurse Harrow | Strict, Terrifying, Savior |
| Rat King | Scrappy, Regal, Tenacious |
| Solomon | Strategist, Focused, Checkmate |
| Deadman Danny | Reckless, High-Flying, Explosive |
| Baba | Cackling, Beady, Hexing |
| Violet | Ambitious, Nimble, Creative |

In New York City, the elusive Broker roams from place to place, trading high-tier items for much stronger Corrupted counterparts. His demonic wares are illegal in the city, so he never stays put: one match may find him in an Uptown alley, while the next places him in an abandoned Chinatown storefront.
Each Corrupted Item combines a powerful benefit with a drawback. In every match, it receives negative attributes randomly drawn from a set pool, and the strength of either effect may shift slightly. Those values stay fixed for that game and are the same for all players. Valve cites Corrupted Ricochet and Rapid Recharge as examples.
When The Broker shows up
His exact arrival time changes from match to match, but his first shipment generally stocks around the 30-minute mark. New Corrupted Items then appear roughly every 15 minutes after that, and you can trade eligible items while supplies last.
The Broker is not permanent. He stays in New York for only a few days, and once the first new hero arrives, in-game authorities begin cracking down and he leaves.

New York City map overhaul
The Cursed Apple has been redrawn with far more personality, and each lane now has recognizable landmarks. The three main lanes run through distinct parts of the city.
| Lane | Area | Key locations |
|---|---|---|
| Blue — Broadway | Broadway | Uptown, Times Square, Downtown |
| Green — Greenwich | Greenwich | Umbria University, Central Park, The Brownstones |
| Yellow — York | York | Stock Exchange, Seaport Dock, Old Fairfax Factories |
Times Square is now a major visual centerpiece, while Central Park features the Hangman’s Elm, a tree described as roughly 300 years old. The Seaport area was rebuilt around Pier 16 and a mysterious docked vessel. Mid-boss at York, both the model and the room, remains largely unchanged for now.
The four Districts
Between the main streets sit four Districts meant to act as busier connecting corridors: Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot, and Plaza. Two of them house the update’s new objectives.

New Haunt neutrals
The old neutral camps have been replaced by a wider set of themed creatures called Haunts, each tied to the part of the city where it appears.
- Specimen — occult-science creatures, including severed hands that crawl on their own.
- Past Dues — book-and-story themed neutrals found in Greenwich.
- Gutter Ghouls — physical forms of humanity’s discarded dark thoughts.
- Barrel Mimics — barrel-shaped creatures that explode like gunpowder.
- Stage Hands — haunted-theater creatures in the Theater District.
- Crabbage Pots — Chinatown creatures tied to a ritual in the water.
- Festival Spirit — aggressive spirits born from festival hopes and wishes.
- Shrooms — walking mushrooms exposed to demonic energy in the Haunted Lot.
- Underhands — low-crawling, pickpocket-themed creatures in the Plaza District.

New objectives and map mechanics
The redesigned city adds several interactive systems beyond looks. Two new objectives sit inside the Districts.
- Bell Tower (Chinatown) — a concentrated Souls hotspot. Claiming it rings the bell loudly across the map, alerting other players.
- Sunken Plaza (Plaza) — a high-risk, high-reward area beneath the main square. The deeper you go, the more isolated you become, and stamina becomes harder to manage.
Several smaller systems round out the map changes:
- Tough Crates — require a Heavy Melee to break but drop more Souls.
- Buff Containers — Spirit Resist, Bullet Resist, Ability Range, and Move Speed are now granted by the revamped golden statues.
- Healing Snacks — hidden around the city so you can recover health on the move.
- Steam Vents — grant invisibility and small regeneration while you stand on them.

HUD, shop, and quality-of-life changes
The interface received a broad rework. A new health bar shows player names, a Rejuvenator indicator, an ultimate indicator, critical health status, stamina tracking, current health value, neutral and objective info, and damage number options.
Other HUD additions include always-visible ally indicators, clearer stat readouts for your power level and spikes, a cleaner targeting mode, and a new Event Feed. The feed shows what item or ability landed a killing blow, full bounty values with your personal share, and reminders to grab Soul Bags from your kills.
Shop improvements
- Popular Items — uses live player data to surface the most-bought items for your hero, with purchase rate and game phase in the tooltip.
- Item Filters — filter and mix stat categories to shape a build around the stats you want.
- Build tools — updated Build Browser, build copy and paste, instant category resizing, and bug fixes.
- Shop settings — improved search, scrolling, and navigation, with keys 1-6 jumping between shop tabs by default.

Pings, communication, and voice lines
Communication got a large expansion. The minimap and topbar ping wheels were widened, ability pings can now carry detailed cooldown info, and a typing indicator was added. Troopers, Neutrals, Ziplines, Rift, Bridge Buffs, the Shop, and more now respond to pings, and pinging an enemy cluster on the minimap calls out how many are there.
You can ping items in the shop to signal intent to buy, and enemy pings can relay critical health, death status, or an impending respawn. Over 15,000 pings were added or updated, and pre-match hero conversations grew from over 700 to around 1,500.
City Never Sleeps ends a long content drought and touches nearly every part of Deadlock, from the map layout to the shop and communication tools. The full breakdown lives on Valve’s official City Never Sleeps page. With the hero release order decided by votes, the order you see new characters go live comes down to what the community picks starting October 2nd.
