Picking the right class in Defend Bunker from Zombies decides how far your defense holds once the waves stop being polite. Each option comes with its own starter tool, a three-level perk tree, and a shard price that ranges from cheap enough for a first-timer to a serious late-game investment. The ranking below sorts all 10 classes by how much survival and base-defense value they deliver from your opening night through the endgame.
Quick answer: Astronaut, Rocketeer, and Zeus sit in S tier; Medic, Soldier, Engineer, and Pyro fill A tier; Swordsman and Tycoon land in B; Thief is the lone C-tier pick.

S tier: the endgame carries
Astronaut is the strongest overall pick in the game. Its kit stacks special gravity control, bullets that ricochet once, and a Black Hole ability at Level 3 that pulls crowds together for cleanup. It costs the most at 950 shards, but nothing else dominates late waves the way it does.
Rocketeer is your answer to packed hordes. Rockets deal splash damage from Level 1, projectile speed climbs 30% at Level 2, and a 200% RPG damage boost at Level 3 turns a single shot into a wave-clearing explosion. It’s the cleanest way to delete groups of zombies at once.
Zeus is the value standout of the top tier. At 400 shards, or free through a 7-day login, it delivers lightning damage, shock effects on hits, and cloud movement for repositioning. That combination of crowd control and mobility for the price is why it clears the S-tier bar despite costing less than half of Astronaut.
A tier: reliable all-rounders
Medic is the best starting class, full stop. At just 40 shards it gives slower hunger drain, 25% increased health regeneration, and an auto-revive after your first death. That safety net keeps new players alive long enough to farm shards for everything above it.
Soldier keeps things simple and effective. The Assault Rifle plus 15% faster reloads, a 20% fire-rate bump, and ammo returned on kills means steady, dependable damage without any gimmick to manage.
Engineer is the base-defense specialist. You start with three Bow Turrets, repair structures without a wrench, and cut wall and turret repair costs by half. If your win condition is holding a line rather than pushing damage, this is the class built for it.
Pyro shines from the mid-game onward. Its Flame Thrower stacks area-of-effect burn damage, fire clings to zombies twice as long, and flames spread between nearby enemies. A 25% generator fuel efficiency bonus adds a useful economy edge on top of the damage.

B tier: situational utility
Swordsman handles close combat and resource gathering well, thanks to reduced melee damage taken and 35% faster tree cutting. The catch is range. Once waves ramp up, getting in melee reach becomes a real liability, which caps its ceiling.
Tycoon is the economy pick. Shops and weapon crates cost 20% less, kills earn 25% more Golden Bills, and each night you survive pays out more currency. It’s a strong money engine, but it brings no direct combat power of its own.
C tier: skip it for now
Thief lands at the bottom because the math doesn’t add up. It asks for 450 shards, more than Zeus, while offering perks that top out at stealing up to 400 bills per minute and opening loot crates 50% faster. Neither perk keeps you alive when the waves get heavy, so the price rarely justifies the pick.
If you’re just starting out, buy Medic first and let the auto-revive buy you time. Once shards pile up, Zeus is the smartest jump for the price, and Astronaut is the long-term goal if you want to control the endgame outright.
