Diablo 4’s fifteenth season is built around the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and it leans on that history hard. Deckard Cain’s spirit sends you back into reimagined nightmares from earlier Diablo games, the Horadric Cube gets a deterministic path to Mythic gear, and a Rebirth system finally lets you drag your favorite Eternal character into the seasonal realm without deleting it.
Quick answer: Season of Hell’s Legacy starts on September 15. Kill the Echoes of Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto to collect three Malignant Thorns, equip one to become a Dark Wanderer, and socket Splinters into your jewelry for seasonal power.

Add to Google Preferences →The Hell’s Legacy questline: Echoes of Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto
The corrupted spirit of Deckard Cain opens the season with word of three Dark Wanderers. You chase each Prime Evil into a location pulled straight out of series history: the Echo of Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, the Echo of Baal at the Arreat Summit, and the Echo of Mephisto inside the Durance of Hate. Each kill hands over a Malignant Thorn.
Equipping a Thorn turns your character into a Dark Wanderer and periodically fires off that Evil’s signature attack in combat. Diablo grants Fire damage, Baal grants Cold, and Mephisto grants Physical. The catch is symmetrical: wielding a Thorn makes you more vulnerable to the Prime Evil it came from. You can swap your choice by returning to the Waking Nightmare, so nothing is locked in.
Your pick also reshapes what you farm. Each faction carries eight activity modifiers and six upgrades tied to the endgame loops, and they don’t overlap.
| Prime Evil | Damage type | Activities modified |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo | Fire | Helltides, Infernal Hordes |
| Baal | Cold | Kurast Undercity, Lair Bosses |
| Mephisto | Physical | The Pit, Nightmare Dungeons |
Splinters: jewelry sockets that cost you something
Splinters slot into jewelry, grant elemental or Physical resistance, and each one pairs a serious upside with a real drawback. They behave more like Diablo 3’s Legendary Gems than a normal gem, because the downside is large enough to define a build rather than decorate it.

| Splinter | Bonus | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Anguish | Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed | Higher Primary Resource costs |
| Sin | More Maximum Health | Less Maximum Primary Resource |
| Lies | More Gold, crafting materials, and Experience | Permanently Weakened and Vulnerable |
| Black Soulstone | Stacking damage from kills | Each soul raises damage taken |
| Pain | Damage Reduction | Lower Movement Speed |
| The Mother | Unhindered, applies Vulnerable on contact | Stuns you after enough contacts |
| Hellfire | Large multiplicative damage | Removes all Critical Strike Chance |
| Damnation | Monster Power rises after Elite kills | Harder packs |
Splinters drop across five qualities, and the naming makes the tier obvious in your inventory, from a plain Splinter of Damnation up to a Greater Splinter of the Mother or an Abyssal Splinter of Hellfire. Lower-quality Splinters feed into the Horadric Cube to be upgraded, so you keep the ones you want and grind their tiers rather than praying for the perfect drop.

Waking Nightmares and Overland Ambushes
Waking Nightmares are the season’s main activity hub. They mix capstone-style dungeons, open-world encounters, and scalable boss fights, and they are also where you go to change which Malignant Thorn you carry. Boss encounters let you set the difficulty yourself: on Torment, you can push a fight up to three tiers above your current difficulty, and the rewards climb with it. It doubles as a quick honesty check on whether your build is ready to farm higher.
Overland Ambushes are the nastier addition. While you’re riding around Sanctuary, a warning appears and a powerful demon starts hunting you. You get 30 seconds to decide whether to run or stand and fight, with no menu, no queue, and no sigil involved. Keep a defensive cooldown available while you’re mapping, because these are tuned as genuine threats rather than filler events.

Mythic crafting: upgrade the item you already have
The big itemization change is a Horadric Cube recipe that converts an eligible item directly into its Mythic version. It is a straight one-to-one transfer, so affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking all survive the upgrade. If you already own a near-perfect Unique, you no longer throw that work away chasing a random Mythic.

Two rules govern it. Items marked Unmodifiable can’t use the recipe, so don’t Transfigure a Unique you plan to upgrade. And the result carries a Crafted tag, with only one Crafted item allowed on your character at a time. Mythics you find as drops, or get from the other crafting routes, are unaffected by that limit.
| Method | Result | Crafted tag |
|---|---|---|
| Horadric Cube direct upgrade | The selected item becomes its Mythic version | Yes |
| Jeweler rune crafting | Random class-specific Mythic for a chosen slot | No |
| Blacksmith Mythic Cache | Random valid Mythic Unique or Iconic Mythic | No |
Every Iconic Mythic also gets a regular Unique version, which shows up far earlier in progression. You can build around the effect while the Mythic stays the endgame target instead of running a placeholder build for weeks.
Legacy Uniques and the new Charms
Nine items from earlier Diablo games arrive as permanent additions to both realms, not seasonal loans. Their effects have been retuned for Diablo 4’s item system rather than copied verbatim.
| Item | Slot | Classes |
|---|---|---|
| Leoric’s Crown | Helm | All |
| Nemesis Bracers | Gloves | All |
| Stone of Jordan | Ring | All |
| Squirt’s Blouse | Chest | All |
| Arioc’s Needle | 2H Polearm | Barbarian, Druid, Spiritborn |
| Henri’s Perquisition | Offhand Focus | Sorcerer, Necromancer, Warlock |
| In-Geom | 1H Sword | Barbarian, Druid, Rogue, Necromancer, Paladin, Warlock |
| The Furnace | 2H Mace | Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Warlock |
| Messerschmidt’s Reaver | 2H Axe | Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Warlock |
The Talisman gets 16 new Unique Charms, several of them built on the returning Legacy Uniques. On top of that, any Unique Charm now has a small chance to drop at Mythic quality, rolling maximum values and a stronger Unique property. Mythic Charms cannot be crafted or target farmed, so they stay a pure drop chase.
Character Rebirth: how to bring an Eternal character into the season
Rebirth converts an Eternal Realm character into a Seasonal one at level 1. It keeps the character’s name, class, appearance, Normal or Hardcore state, transmogs, pigments, mounts and mount accessories, pets, portals, headstones, and a running playtime total across every Rebirth. It does not carry over gear, power, or seasonal progress, and it does not skip leveling.
Horadric Post and shared War Plans progress
The Horadric Post is a one-way mailbox attached to your account. Blizzard uses it to deliver rewards, supplies, commemorative items, and messages straight to you. Players cannot send anything through it, so it is delivery only, not trading.
War Plans reputation is now pooled between characters that match on three filters: Eternal or Seasonal, Softcore or Hardcore, and Standard or Solo Self-Found. Hardcore has an extra rule. Only characters still alive at the end of Season 14 pass their War Planning points to the Eternal Realm, and you need at least one surviving Hardcore character in the matching category to inherit that progress.

War Plans also pay out much better. Experience rewards scale heavily with Torment level, and any War Plans node in Torment X and above now awards four Experience Orbs at baseline instead of two, regardless of reward type.
Class balance: Barbarian trimmed, Druid boosted
All eight classes were touched, but the two clearest swings are at opposite ends. Barbarian’s core stat scalar drops from 1.1 to 0.8, with cuts running through Call of the Ancients, Two-Handed Sword Expertise, the Disembowel and Crusher glyphs, and the Hemorrhage and Blood Rage legendary nodes. Some Uniques get better in exchange, notably Ring of Red Furor, which now needs 30 Fury instead of 100 to guarantee its Critical Strike bonus.
Druid moves the other way, with its core stat scalar rising from 1.25 to 1.625. Grizzly Rage absorbs Cornered Beast into the base skill at up to 150% bonus damage, Greatstaff of the Crone roughly doubles, and Fleshrender’s tornado bonus now applies to all tornadoes at a far higher value. Shifter’s Aspect adds Damage Reduction on every shift.
Note: PTR builds are not final numbers, and several classes that looked weak during testing were adjusted before launch. Treat pre-season tier lists as a starting point rather than a ranking.
Farming and reward changes worth knowing
Several long-standing grinds got faster. Whisper Gold Caches at Torment XII jump from roughly 35 million to roughly 100 million Gold, Gem Caches now hand out a Royal or Grand Gem instead of a Flawless one, and salvage and Cube material caches pay two to three times as much. Elite enemies in Torment X and above drop far more Gem Fragments and have a much better chance of dropping a Royal Gem. The Echo of Mephisto now guarantees a Mythic drop, and bonus Experience from high Pit tiers rose sharply, with Tier 150 going from 1800% to 2700%. Expert and Penitent difficulties also unlock after the Prologue rather than requiring a full campaign clear.
The Season Journey runs nine tiers and 125 objectives, paying out up to 14 skill points, 42 Paragon points, Sparks, and five Mythic Unique Caches, with class-specific armor sets in the free and premium reward tracks. Twitch Drops run from September 16 to September 30 and grant the Forest Ravage two-handed axe cosmetic for two hours of Diablo IV viewing. Xbox Game Pass subscribers who link their Battle.net account get access to more than 50 multi-class cosmetics, and a CD Projekt Red partnership brings Geralt-themed cosmetics into Sanctuary.
If you want to hit the ground running on September 15, the useful prep is narrow: empty the Eternal character you plan to Rebirth, and bank any Uniques with strong Tempering and Masterworking that you’d want to push through the Cube’s Mythic upgrade on day one.
