A full walkthrough of Dokkodo’s Tales and the Aka-Oni questline, covering the start NPCs, objectives, reputation gates, and the rewards for every tale.

Tales are the side-quest storylines you take on across Dokkodo’s world, handed out by NPCs in places like Nara and the campfires along its crossroads. They send you into outposts, dicehouses, and bandit camps for rewards that range from a coin pouch to a horse of your own, and the Aka-Oni storyline threads a darker investigation through the towns that eventually opens up its own raid. Below, each tale is broken down by where it starts, what you have to do, and what you walk away with.

Tales

The Tales below are standalone storylines, each begun by speaking to a specific NPC. Several gate progress behind reputation or behind finishing an earlier tale first, so the order you tackle them in can matter. The headings that follow use the exact in-game names of the tales and their rewards.

Soldiers Endorsement

Part of the Break the Outpost storyline, this tale opens with the line “Bring it to the Commander at kyoto outpost, it will keep his eye on it.” You begin it by talking to the Capital Ashigaru at Nara, who is located at the campfire on the cross roads in Nara. To complete the tale, you need to kill sohei at the Upper Nara Sohei Outpost and then talk with the Capital Ashigaru again.

Commanders Favor

Carrying the line “Take it to the castle and get your audience,” this tale is started by talking to the Commander after you have acquired Soldiers Endorsement and reached 10 reputation. To complete it, you need to protect a shogunate informant who comes from hiding at night from inside the kyoto outpost, going with them under the halls of the shogun castle. After you successfully escort the informant, you return back to the Commander.

Losers and Winners

Dokkodo - Losers and Winners

Introduced with the question “Losers and winners. Which one are you?”, this tale begins when you find the Hustler, who mentions something related to gambling. From there you head to the Dicehouse. To complete the tale you need to win 120 mon, and after winning 120 mon from gambling you will get the Coin Pouch.

Stolen hooves

Dokkodo - Stolen hooves

This tale is framed by two lines: “Spare a word. A horse shipment has been taken near the old pines.” and “Traveler, I could use some help. our trail horse got stolen.” You start it by finding the Stable Hand, who mentions something related to a shipment as described above, and beginning their tale. Head to the area marked by the game and clear the camp. After clearing the camp, ride the horse that is in the camp and bring it to the Stables, then talk to the Stable Hand and explain the situation. You should then get the Trail Horse.

Aka-oni Storyline

Dokkodo - Aka-oni Storyline
Dokkodo - Aka-oni Storyline

The Aka-Oni Questline is its own chain, following a string of bloodied warnings through town. It is split into stages that move you from confirming the rumors to tracking down the person responsible, and clearing it ultimately unlocks the Aka-Oni raid. The two stages documented for this questline are detailed below.

Whispers at the Bridge

This opening stage carries the prompt “Bloodied warnings have appeared in town. See if the whispers are true..” To start the quest, talk to the guard NPC standing next to a beheaded person on the bridge that leads to Nara. Completing this part of the quest requires 10 reputation.

Marked for the Public

The next stage, prompted by “Search Kyoto for the next display site,” picks up after you speak to the guard NPC. Head to the bridge that exists forward-left of the Stables, interact with the NPC that is placing a head on the bridge, and kill him. Pick up the loot he drops, obtaining Aka-Oni’s message. This item will allow you to start the Aka-Oni raid at the Westpoint House.

Worked through in order, these tales build up your reputation and rewards while the Aka-Oni stages steer you toward the raid at the Westpoint House. Keep an eye on the reputation gates on Commanders Favor and Whispers at the Bridge, since those are the points where progress can stall if you arrive too early.
