The Truant Soldier is a side quest in the frozen region of Norgan, and it asks one thing of you: find Amos, a soldier of the commission who wandered off into a whiteout and cannot get back on his own. The trip takes you out of the Mountain Stronghold, across the Norgan Snowfield in a blinding storm, through a short fight, and back to camp.

Quick answer: Talk to Chrona in the Mountain Stronghold hall to start the quest, head south-east through the Norgan Snowfield to Amos, clear the enemies around him, then check in with him at Northwall Campground.

Chrona asks for help in the Mountain Stronghold hall; in a Norgan Snowfield whiteout the lines “You heard Amos calling for help.” and “Find Amos.” appear at a ravine; Amos is saved beside a brazier and a tether post; at Northwall Campground he pays “+35000 XP” and “25000 G” and the banner reads “Completed: The Truant Soldier”.

Where Chrona gives you The Truant Soldier

Chrona is the soldier who hands you this quest, and she is inside the Mountain Stronghold, not out at the campground. Go to the hall where the commission soldiers are clearing rubble. She stands in that room beside Wash. Walking up to her is enough. Her lines start on their own, with no hail needed and no choice to accept or decline, so the quest is simply added once she has spoken.

She explains that Amos left his post while the soldiers were shifting rubble and has not come back. She fears he is lost and stranded somewhere in the Norgan Snowfield, and since the commission cannot search beyond the campground, she asks you to keep an eye out for him. When her talk ends, a banner reads “The Truant Soldier” with the objective “Search for Amos.”

If you go looking for Chrona at Northwall Campground first, you may not find her there: she gave this quest in the stronghold hall.

Heading into the Norgan Snowfield in a whiteout

Amos is in the Norgan Snowfield, the open stretch east of the Mountain Stronghold reached by its lift. Ride the lift down, then use the wooden shack just east of the landing as your starting point.

From the shack, walk south-east into the snow. Hobgoblins and Bugaboos roam the path, so expect a few fights along the way. A whiteout is blowing the whole time, which turns the minimap into a blank grey disc and closes the view in tight around you. With the map useless, the quest banners are your only sign that you are getting close.

After a few minutes of walking south-east from the shack, the banner changes to “You heard Amos calling for help,” and the objective becomes “Find Amos.” This happens at the rim of a ravine.

Finding Amos and clearing the ledge

Amos waits across the ravine on elevated ground. His location is a paved ledge beside a circular iron brazier. A rope is fastened to a carved wooden post wrapped in red and white bands. This hook tether post displays an “F Descend” prompt.

As soon as you reach him, the objective changes to “Aid Amos.” He cries out as Beorcans and Nokken swarm around him. Take out every nearby enemy; when the last one falls, Amos begins speaking on his own.

He thanks you, recounts being in the stronghold one moment and stranded the next, then asks how to get back. When he is done, the banner changes to “You rescued Amos,” and the objective becomes “Check in with Amos.”

Check in with Amos at Northwall Campground

The instruction “Check in with Amos” doesn’t mean speaking with him again on the ledge; go see him at Northwall Campground instead. You don’t have to wait for his return. Amos can already be at the campground the same in-game day.

At Northwall Campground, head to the rear of the cave. Amos is beside the stacked crates and the chest; his prompt reads “F Hail (Hold to Talk),” so keep the key held instead of tapping it. A tap only hails him.

Amos thanks you once more and explains that a whiteout hit while the soldiers were moving rubble. He took shelter at the spot where you found him until help arrived.

Reward and how you know it is done

When Amos finishes speaking, the reward lines appear on screen along with the banner “You received a token of Amos’s gratitude,” then “Completed: The Truant Soldier” a few seconds later. That final banner is your confirmation the quest is closed out.

Those are the rewards as they show up, 35,000 XP and 25,000 G. No separate item is handed over in the reward lines. Talking to Amos again after the quest completes only gives a few more lines about the whiteout, so once you see “Completed: The Truant Soldier,” you are free to move on.
