In for a Hare, in for a Hound is a short Dark Arisen side quest set in Norgan, and finishing it hands you one of the expansion’s most useful helpers: Freki, a dire wolf that sniffs out hidden relic piles for extra loot. The quest asks for one piece of Alpine Hare Meat, a short chase, and a single chest.

Quick answer: Talk to Ilsa at the northern exit of Norgandian Settlement, bring her Alpine Hare Meat, follow Freki to the coastal chest west of the village, then return to Ilsa to unlock her relic tracking.

Where to start In for a Hare, in for a Hound

Head to the northern exit of Norgandian Settlement in Norgan. Ilsa, who owns the hounds, walks up to you on the road leading out of the village and starts the conversation herself. She explains that monsters have driven off local prey, leaving her hounds with nothing but scraps, and asks you to hunt something to feed them.

Ilsa does not appear the moment you first reach the settlement. Leave the village and explore the surrounding region first. If she is missing, complete other Norgan quests and let a day or two pass in-game, then return to the northern exit.

Hunt Alpine Hare Meat for Ilsa

Open the world map after accepting the quest. Three hunting areas are marked around Norgandian Foothills. The northern circle sits closest to Ilsa, so it is the fastest to reach.

Travel out of the settlement toward the nearest marked zone. Expect hostile wildlife along the way, including direwolves near the riverbank and harpies on the snowy hills, so clear or run past them as you climb the mountain path.

Inside the search circle, look for small white alpine hares hopping across the field. Kill one and loot its body to pick up Alpine Hare Meat. You only need a single piece to satisfy the objective, so there is no need to clear the whole area.

Use a bow to take the hare down. Have an archer pawn fire on it rather than hacking with swords or daggers, since a clean shot avoids destroying the carcass and keeps the meat intact for pickup.

Follow Freki to the coastal chest

Bring the Alpine Hare Meat to Ilsa and give it to her. She feeds it to Freki, her dire wolf, and Freki then leads you away in gratitude. This section also shows off Freki’s scouting, so keep close enough to follow her all the way.

Follow Freki out of the settlement. She stops at a pile of junk inside a crashed boat along the lake. Loot it for the spoils she sniffed out.

The quest ‘A Hound and His Bone’ tells the player to follow Freki, with a Hail (Hold to Talk) prompt beside a burning brazier outside a wooden building.
Keep trailing her up the mountain toward the coastal cliffs west of the village. She halts at a treasure chest overlooking the coast.
Open the chest to collect its contents, which include Lv 1 Ancient Greaves, a Lv 1 Ancient Helm, and three Abandoned Supplies. This clears the exploration objective.

Finish the quest and unlock Freki’s relic tracking

Send the hound back and return to Norgandian Settlement. Speak with Ilsa to tell her of Freki’s discovery, and the quest closes out. You know it worked when the quest log marks it complete and Ilsa hands you your rewards.

When you finish, you earn 10,000 XP, three Scrags of Beast, and the option to have Freki locate hidden relic piles. You receive no gold; Freki is the lasting reward. To put her to work, interact with the wolf and feed her meat, then follow when she catches a scent. Finds you collect can later be appraised and turned into weapons and armor. After some time, Ilsa returns to start the A Direwolf Delicacy quest.

Alpine Hare Meat and Scrag of Beast stats

Two curatives sit at the center of this quest: the Alpine Hare Meat you deliver, and the Scrags of Beast Ilsa gives back as a reward. Both are the fuel Freki runs on, so it helps to know what each restores and weighs.

Alpine Hare Meat is edible alpine hare flesh found exclusively in Norgan, and you can stack up to 99. Many types of beasts can drop it as well, and it eventually ages into Aged Alpine Hare Meat. Scrag of Beast is ordinary meat from wild creatures; the quest awards three, and it sells for 100 G at Borderwatch Outpost. It also ages into Aged Scrag of Beast. Keep a few pieces ready to feed Freki and try her tracking without first searching for more food.
