Dragon’s Dogma 2: Why an NPC Won’t Talk and How to Fix the Missing Hail Prompt

“Hail (Hold to Talk)”: a tap hails, a hold opens the talk.

An NPC that gives only a floating one-liner, or no prompt at all, is almost never a bug in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and its Dark Arisen content. The talk system draws a line between a quick greeting and a real conversation, and it hides prompts whenever the situation is not right for one. Once you know what the game is reacting to, every stuck conversation in Norgan and beyond has a quick fix.

Quick answer: A tap of the talk key only hails the character. Hold the key for about a second to open the real conversation, shop menu, or quest offer.

The prompt on Ilsa and on Hal reads “Hail (Hold to Talk)”; holding it on Hal opens his talk and his menu; Dorin’s first hail is his thanks for the rescue and the second is the talk about Skoll; the Sphinx is approached on the dais in front of her; Dwayne walks up and starts his talk by himself.

Fast fix checklist for a stuck conversation

Run through these in order before you assume a character has nothing for you. Most blocked talks clear within the first two steps.

Hold the talk key rather than tapping it. A tap only produces a passing line beside the character; holding opens the menu or the quest offer.
Stand directly in front of the person, roughly a metre away, not behind or beside them.
Once all nearby enemies are dead, put away your weapon. Move back, then forward to refresh the prompt.
Hold the key again and keep talking until the character’s lines start to repeat.
If nothing new appears, come back at a different time of day, or leave the area and walk back in later.

Hail versus hold to talk

Approach any person you can interact with; the prompt displays “F Hail (Hold to Talk)”. This indicates that both actions use the same key.

This is the single most common reason a conversation seems dead. Mistaking that passing line for “this person has nothing for me” sends players walking off right before the real offer would have appeared. The hold works the same way on Captain Brant in the Stardrop Inn, and on Hal, Ilsa, Dorin, Dwayne, Jiera, Amos, Ilda, and Aymond.

Stand in front, and stand on the right spot

A prompt appears only when you are close enough and facing the person. Hal the smith won’t show one if you approach from behind or get stuck between him and his hut. Move around to face him from roughly a metre away, and the prompt will appear. His position also varies as he moves among his anvil, grindstone, and water barrel.

Some interactions require you to stand on an exact spot. The Sphinx at the Shrine of Wisdom displays her prompt when you’re on the octagonal stone dais right in front of her. The snow next to the dais won’t work, making the encounter seem broken when you’re simply standing in the wrong place.

Clear nearby enemies and sheathe your weapon

While monsters are close, objects stop showing their “Examine” prompt and many people refuse to talk. At the Mountain Stronghold, the lift’s winch post showed nothing until every Ghoul around the winch house was dead. The stronghold’s ballista behaves the same way. Trying to use a winch, lever, or ballista in the middle of a fight is a frequent dead end. A prompt can take a short moment and a small movement to reappear once the danger is gone.

Keep talking until the lines repeat

A character answers each hold of the key with the next line in their queue, so a quest offer can sit behind one or two other things they want to say first. With Dorin, the first hold gave his thanks for rescuing Ilsa — “Dwayne tells me you helped him rescue Ilsa. You’ve my gratitude.” The second was about the sage. Only the third hold produced the Village Defense offer: “So, are you prepared to safeguard the village tonight while I tend to my old man’s wounds?”

Dorin’s conversation with the Next prompt that steps through each queued line.

This also occurs in A Hound and His Bone: Dorin’s first response was the thanks again, followed by his line about Skoll. Once the lines loop, you’ve heard everything that character has available for now.

A conversation’s small hint list, at the lower right, shows “Next” and, on some characters, “Give Gift Y”, so you can tell when there is more to step through.

Come back at another time of day

Some offers are only available at particular times. Dorin had his other lines at night, but no Village Defense option; it appeared in the morning. After her rescue, Ilsa was inside the house beside the carved lodge and had no prompt. On a later morning, she was back by her fire basket. If a character says everything but the line you’re after, wait or sleep, then check again.

When the quest giver comes to you

Several Norgan talks start on their own as you walk near, rather than waiting for you to press the key. Dwayne steps up outside the inn with “Hoy! Could you spare a bit of time?” Ilda approaches in the settlement with “Please, ser. Might I speak with you a moment?” The same auto-start happens with Dorin by the bonfire, Chrona in the Mountain Stronghold hall, Amos at Northwall Campground, and Ilsa at her fire basket.

When one of these people only speaks passing lines, their quest depends on another quest or the time of day. Repeatedly pressing the key won’t make it appear. Go elsewhere, do something else, then return later and let the condition update.

Services that only run at set hours

A service worker can refuse even when the talk itself works. The oxcart driver at the West Vernworth station answered “Apologies, but I can’t offer you a ride, ser,” and the game showed the tutorial “Oxcart Service Hours”: “Most carts depart in the early morning, but if you arrive too late or too early, you can pass the time till the next departure at the oxcart station.” If a driver turns you down, you are simply outside the departure window.

A tutorial pop-up titled Oxcart Service Hours shows a man in front of an ox, with text about cart departure times.
The “Oxcart Service Hours” tutorial panel explains that most carts depart in the early morning, and that you can pass time at the oxcart station until the next departure.

The choice-list trap with Esc

Inside a choice list, Esc does not close the list. It only moves the cursor down to “Cancel”. If you then press confirm, it cancels. Press down and confirm instead and you can pick an option you never wanted, which is exactly how an unplanned “Rest till Nightfall” gets bought at an inn. Read the highlighted option before you confirm.

Dim inn interior with the innkeeper Dwayne and a tame hound; a menu offers Rest till Morning, Rest till Nightfall and Cancel.
An innkeeper tells the player, “Father’s asked me to let you stay at the inn while you’re here,” with the options Rest till Morning, Rest till Nightfall and Cancel on offer.

You will know the system is behaving when a held press opens a menu or a quest banner fires. A choice that reads “A Hound and His Bone” with the note “You spoke with Dorin about Skoll’s whereabouts” is the game confirming the talk advanced the quest, not just chatter.

Work through hold, position, enemies, repeated lines, and time of day in that order, and almost any silent villager in Dragon’s Dogma 2 turns out to have been waiting on one small thing the whole time.
